Celine Beaumont grew up in the Hamptons at her parent's equestrian center. Ten months out of the year she had a happy life, but every summer wealthy families invaded the Hamptons and her stables. Celine was forced to take lessons with their children, and they were monsters. Especially anyone who was born into the Billionaires Club. Especially anyone named Phillip Bloombard. Then one summer Sebastian Gale, a new B-Club heir joined the stables. His family was newly rich and unlike the other B-Club bullies, he was nice and normal and he befriended Celine. This drove Phillip crazy. Years passed and Celine was 16. She was gorgeous, and an accomplished rider, and was still friends with Sebastian. But that year, their friendship started to become something more, until Sebastian disappeared without a word. Two years later Celine was married to Phillip who was more sophisticated in his methods of torture. But she loved him and he used that to turn her into the perfect billionaires’ wife. Six years passed and the night her mother died she couldn’t find Phillip and when she did, it led to a divorce. Celine was 24 divorced and getting her life back together. She made one rule she must never break. Never under any circumstance could she fall in love with a billionaire. But, Sebastian reappeared and Phillip wanted her back. No matter how hard she tried she could not get rid of those billionaires. Then one catastrophe after another strikes and it’s life and death. What will she do? What will she have to sacrifice? The Billionaires Club had a billion ways to get what they wanted and she might be back in their clutches again.
View MoreSipping a cup of bitter coffee Celine walked down the hall to her mother’s room. She hated hospitals. They smelled like disinfectants and body odors. And they all had the same vinyl floors that no matter how much you washed them, they held onto dirt embedded in tiny scratches and crevices.
This place was depressing. She wanted to take her mom home so she could be comfortable, but Mom insisted on staying here. She said she didn’t want to be a bother. We only had her on this earth for a few more weeks. How could she be a bother?
"Cold Blue. Code Blue. Room 2114. All available staff. Cold Blue.", a speaker blared, startling her and scalding the back of her hand with hot coffee.
People dressed in scrubs erupted from stairwells or around corners and ran past her. Realization bloomed and she began running. Room 2114, that was their room.
She heard the alarms getting louder as she ran. She was going so fast that she had to grab the molding of the door to control her swing into the room where a medical team surrounded her mom. Celine's throat burned and the room looked impossibly bright. People were shouting out commands she did not understand.
“Mom!” She tried to reach her mother but was pushed back. Peering around the medical staff, Celine strained to see what was going on, but she couldn't see past the sea of scrubs. Grabbing the nearest person she yelled to get their attention “What is happening."
"Ma'am", I am going to need you to stay out of the way or you will have to leave the room.", said a male nurse who gently pushed her toward a seat and then went back to work.
Fading into the background she watched. She had never felt so helpless before. Her head was throbbing, and her body tingled full of an energy she could not spend. She started feeling dizzy and realized she was holding her breath.
A different nurse was reading something on the computer screen beside her mom's bed and shouted over the din.
"It says, do not resuscitate.", nobody looked up from what they were doing. “Where is a family member.", someone shouted, they were looking for her."I'm here. Celine said her voice trembling. She forced herself to speak clearly. “I'm her daughter."
A minute later everyone was gone except for a doctor and a nurse. Celine was back at her mother’s side crying. "Ma'am, she has an advance directive, and she requested not to be resuscitated.", the doctor said, his tone clinical and well-rehearsed.
"I don't know what that means. I don't understand, why you are all just standing there?" She looked back at her mom and moaned.
"It means when it’s her time, she wants to go.", the nurse said, her voice sounded compassionate, and Celine was grateful she explained it plainly.
Celine clung to her mother, begging like a small child. "Mommy. Don't leave me."
The doctor’s voice softened. "I'm sorry ma'am. All we can do now is wait.” He put his hand on Celine’s shoulder and squeezed. “You might want to say your goodbyes." The nurse nodded her head in confirmation.
Taking her mother’s hand, she brought it to her lips. The icy extremities and lax muscles accentuated that death was near. Hesitant and with a voice choked with great feeling, she began to tell her mother what was in her heart. “Hey, Mom. It’s me, Celine.”, she said swiping at her tears and then rubbing her cheek against her mother’s hand.
“I probably didn’t tell you this enough but thank you for being my mom. I felt your love every day and I will keep it here.”, she patted her chest, “forever.”
“Don’t worry about me and Collette. We will take care of each other, and Dad too. And I’ll make sure Collette finishes school, and I’ll help Dad with the stables.”, she said, taking a big breath that turned into a sob.
Her voice was laden with unspent tears it was hard to let go. “You can go now. I know you’re tired. You fought so hard to stay. I know you did because you love us. I love you too, Mommy, so so much.”
Smiling through her tears, Celine clasped her mother’s hand, reached their hands up, and pointed her index finger to the heavens. In a semblance of how her mother used to point to the sky whenever she said, their special words. “I love you to the moon.”, Celine said, then brought her mother’s hand back to her cheek, tears wetting her mother’s limp fingers.
The doctor called the time of death.
Hanging up the phone with her dad, Celine was a mess. When her dad heard how upset she was he insisted on coming to the hospital. The only reason her father was not on his way right now was because she lied and told him that Phillip was there, handling the paperwork. But Phillip was nowhere to be found, and she was alone with no ride home.
She tried calling her husband again, but her hands were shaking so badly that she kept missing the call button. She needed to calm down. After a few deep breaths, she made the call, but his phone went straight to voicemail, again.
Where was he? He knew Mom was dying. She couldn’t drive like this. How was she going to get home?
By the time Celine pulled into the underground parking of the building they lived in, she was numb and tired. She had missed the turn to her street twice. It was a miracle she hadn’t gotten into an accident. All she wanted was her husband. Where was he?
Turning a corner she spotted his parked car, one of many in a line of resident parking. She felt the tension leave her body. She had imagined all sorts of scenarios for why he had not answered. Some of them were horrible.
Then she saw a car in her spot. She came to a stop and stared dumbfounded. What was she supposed to do? How could she go home if there was a car in her spot? Her brain was functioning at the level of a kindergartener. She burst into frustrated tears and the only thing she could think to do was double park, blocking both vehicles in.
Opening the door to their penthouse Celine was triggered by the smells of home and burst into tears. She called out to her husband, "Phillip.", and then dropped everything by the front door in a clatter. Copies of forms bags full of her mother's things, keys, shoes, and the weight she carried in her chest; were abandoned in the entryway of their penthouse. She took a few steps into their spacious front room and heard music coming from their bedroom.
"Phillip.", she said close to hysterics as she stumbled through their penthouses’ open floor plan. All she needed now was to fall into Phillip’s arms and let him console her. She opened the bedroom door and the lights were out. “Bryson Tiller’s – Don’t” was playing on their sound system.
Celine whined softly at the dark room. Terrified and hiccupping, she patted the wall until she found the light switch, and the room illuminated.
There were no words for what she walked in on.
This time, she was ready when the door opened, and the light streamed in. She had squinted her eyes in preparation to be temporarily blinded, which was why she did not see who opened the door when she pounced.“Oof. What the fuck, Celine.” It was Kim. Shit. Initiate Plan B. “Get off of me, you oaf.”, Kim whispered.Celine did not get off her. This oaf was going to keep this treacherous bitch pinned to the ground and force Kim to help her escape. “Not a chance in hell.”, Celine said, using the same move to pin her that she had in the interrogation room but without the hitting.Looking at Kim’s face, she could see bruises forming, so she ground her thumb into the most painful-looking injury.Kim turned her face back and forth, trying to avoid Celine’s finger. “Fuck.” Kim whisper yelled. “Stop it, I’m here to—.”Celine ground harder and hissed, “You’re going to help me get out of here, or I am going to start breaking fingers.”Celine said and immediately thought, “Really? Is this the bes
Kim let her keep the long jacket, which made Celine feel ridiculously grateful—a sentiment her ex-bestie, now Archnemesis did not deserve. Still, the simple act of kindness made a difference when she was forced back into the darkness, which swallowed her up in a terrifying, inky void as soon as they closed the door. She took her place, curled up in the corner, feeling the press of the walls, and felt a modicum of relief to have something to cover her nudity. It was a helpless feeling to wait for an outcome, especially one she could not control, that was a race against time. Who would get to her first, Sophia or Sebastian? And had Sebastian even received her message? Had Kim realized her phone had been hacked, or had she assumed the phone had been lost in the scuffle? Would her ploy be discovered? There was nothing she could do about it if it had, as she had already done all she could to influence the outcome, and now she had to wait in the dark to live or to die.In some ways, her ter
When Celine and Kim were in high school, they had perfected the art of sending text messages under the table without looking at their hands. Above the table, they acted like nothing was happening. Below the table, there was a flurry of thumbs. Like a swan’s calm and graceful glide above water whilst below the waterline, there was frantic paddling. That was her plan, but first, she had to get that phone, and it was all she could think about as Kim continued Celine’s origin story.“It took me years to put all the pieces together, and by the time I found proof of who you were, you had married Phillip. Phillip was a problem. He was a paranoid, controlling bastard who believed in having the best security and always had you under lock and key. Sophia was furious when she realized who you were and told me to do anything I could to destroy your marriage. She wanted you to suffer. She wanted to kill you. So, I started fucking Phillip and leaving evidence for you to find, but the bastard was me
“My father killed Sophia’s mother and her brothers?”, Celine asked.“Yup.”, Kim said. She mumbled to herself. “My father killed Sebastian’s grandfather and uncles.”It all made sense now why Sophia hated her so much, why she was against the marriage. Oh god. This was so horrible. If Sebastian knew—how could he ever be with her? That is if she ever got out of this alive.“Does Sebastian know?”, Celine asked.“No. He doesn’t know any of this.”, Kim said and seemed certain.Celine’s heart sank into a painful abyss of doubt and uncertainty. If she lived, her future with Sebastian was over. He would never marry her if he knew the truth, and she knew she could never keep the truth from him. On so many levels, her life would never be the same. Funny, how the fear of dying did not seem as frightening with the knowledge that if she did live, she would be doomed to a life without Sebastian in it. She scoffed at the irony of her situation. But could she believe what Kim was saying? She searched
When she heard her voice, Celine burst into tears. She had been rescued. Somehow, against all odds, she had been found. Like a newly born fawn, she stood on wobbly legs and burst into tears. “Kim,” she said, barely able to get her best friend’s name out. When Kim did not open her arms and come to her, she tried to run into her arms, but Kim put her hand out, “Stop.”Confused, she obeyed and did not stop to think much about it. She was filthy, so… She was just so thankful. Waves of emotions overwhelmed her exhausted body, too many for her to contain. So, she stood in place, shaking violently in relief, ready to do whatever Kim told her to.But Kim did nothing to rescue her. She did not smile, offer her the long coat she was wearing to cover her nudity, or even offer her comforting words. Kim’s eyes were hard, her arms were crossed, and she looked at Celine like a cockroach she discovered in her silverware drawer.Dread silenced her tears. Had they captured Kim too? “Kim, are you okay?
It’s strange to have a traumatic event she couldn’t recall. It’s even stranger to have a crippling phobia and not know why. For as long as she could remember, she has been terrified of the dark. It was so bad that her parents took her to a psychologist, where she was diagnosed with PTSD and trauma-related Nyctophobia with panic-induced cognitive impairment. AKA She freaked the fuck out like a cat who got their tail caught in a mouse trap when she was in the dark.According to her parents, this was why. When she was four, they visited a friend’s farm, and she was sent to play outside with Collette. After a while, Collette returned alone, crying hysterically. Alarmed, her parents went looking for her, and when they couldn’t find her, they called the sheriff, and people came from all over to help find her. They searched night and day until a search and rescue dog found her trapped in a crawl space under an old, abandoned shed. When Celine had what her parents called “a fit,” she sometime
