Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A lone tear rolled down my cheek, hands clasped together in wishes.

‘Please goddess, make this the best news I’ve ever heard.’

“Congratulations Miss Brooke, you’re now with child.” The doctor walked in, her face beaming with excitement.

The words replayed in my head as I raced through the entrance door with the report clutched tightly in my shaky hands, my breaths coming out in short pants.

Shocked pairs of eyes stared at me but mine searched across the room for his. Knowing there was only one place he could be, I bolted up the stairs and came to a stop in front of a familiar door, my cheeks already hurting from the wide smile plastered on my face. I inhaled sharply and twisted the doorknob, pushing the door open.

Slowly, the smile slipped off my face as I watched the sight in front of me unfold. For a second, my heart stopped beating and the wheels in my head turned furiously in confusion. Just like I’d thought, my fiancé, Reid, was here.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing in front of him with a smile wider than her entire face was my sister, Lorelei, with one of her palms in his and the other flattening her head. I stared at the both of them in disbelief as he slipped a ring on her finger and brought her hand up to kiss it, his lips curling up in a warm smile.

“R—Reid?” I whispered shakily.

They turned to me and I blinked, hoping that the moment was only a thought playing in my head. To my own dismay, it wasn’t. Lorelei was wearing the same engagement band that Reid had proposed to me with a few months ago, on her finger.

He didn’t say a word, but the indifference on his face was hurting more than his silence. He let go of her hand and slipped both of his into his pockets, staring straight back at me. My brows creased further and I looked at her instead, hoping that she’d at least tell me what was going on.

“What is going on?” I asked after a few more seconds of utter silence.

“Brooke?” My father’s voice called from beside me.

My head snapped to the side. I hadn’t noticed him standing at the far end of the room with the other elders of the pack. His face was set in a hard, unyielding expression, his heavy gaze settling on me like judge and jury. They didn’t look surprised, in fact, it felt like they’d known all along.

“Dad.” I breathed, glancing between him and Reid who was still staring at me with a bored expression.

My father signaled for them to leave and the rest of the pack elders trooped out of the room, passing me a pitiful stare on their way out. As soon as the door shut behind me, I opened my mouth to say something but no words formed. Rage bubbled up my throat and I could only dig my fingers into the crumpled pregnancy report so hard that it tore.

“Why does she have my engagement ring?” I tried to steady my voice but I knew they could hear how much I was breaking inside.

“Calm down, Brooke. Do not make a scene out of nothing in front of the Alpha Heir.” His hard, stern gaze is fixed on me.

I raised a confused brow. “Make a scene? What….” Trailing off at a loss for words, I returned my gaze to Reid.

“Baby, please tell me what’s going on.” The plea in my voice was evident but I didn’t stop. “Why does she have my ring? And what are you two doing here?”

He remained silent, briefly glancing at her hands and taking it in his. With a small smile still playing on her lips, she rested her chin on his shoulder. My chest constricted with pain as I stared at their joined hands before glancing back up at him. I refused to believe what my guts told me, certain that Reid would never hurt me.

“Answer me!” A scream ripped through my throat for the first time in my life as a tear ran down my cheek.

“Enough!” My father’s voice echoed through the room and I flinched in shock.

Eerie silence befell the room and I dragged in a deep breath before nodding, recollecting myself. I caught the shock on my sister’s face but the mischief in her eyes told me everything.

I was fuming and I didn’t know how much longer I could hold back.

“Listen, Brooke, Lorelei and I are now engaged.” Reid finally spoke, shrugging her off his shoulder as he took a step towards me.

He stopped a foot away, his frame eclipsing the light from the desk lamp and throwing me in his shadow. His gray eyes were completely devoid of the tenderness he’d looked at me with yesterday when he kissed me on the forehead and promised me forever.

“Engaged?” The word tasted like ash on my tongue. I shook my head, my eyes dropping to the floor for a second because looking at him hurt too much. My hands trembled so violently that the ripped edges of the medical report fluttered against my fingers. "But... we're engaged, Reid. You asked me. You told me I was going to be your Luna. You are my mate."

"A mistake," Reid said smoothly, his shrug so casual it felt like a physical slap to my face. "Look at yourself, Brooke. You’re a hybrid with a dormant, broken wolf. You can barely handle the pressure of pack politics without shrinking into a corner. You were never meant to be a Luna."

Every single word was a calculated strike against the insecurities I had harbored since the day I left the shelter. Broken. Charity. Burden. The dark voice that usually whispered in the back of my mind was suddenly screaming out of my fiancé's mouth.

"No..." I breathed, taking a panicked step forward, entirely forgetting about my father standing beside me. I reached out with trembling fingers, thrusting the crumpled slip of paper right at his chest. "No, you don't mean that. Look at this, Reid. Please, just look at it. I was at the hospital. I'm pregnant. We're having a baby. We can make this work. I'll try harder, I promise."

I hated myself for pleading. Hated how small and pathetic I sounded, begging a man who had already replaced me. But I was fighting for the life of my unborn child. I was fighting for the only family I had ever truly belonged to.

Reid didn't even glance down at the paper. Instead, a sneer of pure, unadulterated disgust curled up his lips. He snatched the report from my shaky fingers, and with a slow, deliberate twist of his wrists, he ripped it in half. Then into quarters. He tossed the shreds into the air, letting them flutter down around my feet like cursed snow.

"Pregnant?" Reid scoffed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark register. "Do not insult my intelligence with your pathetic lies, Brooke. I have never touched you, let alone promised you a future. Your desperation has clearly driven you completely mad."

I stared at the white fragments on the floor, the room spinning violently as the wheels in my head completely locked up. He was denying it. He was denying our child.

My eyes burned with unshed tears as I turned my head towards my father, silently begging him to say something. To protect me. But his hard, stern gaze remained completely intact. He didn't look shocked by Reid's words. He looked disappointed in me.

After a minute of soaking in the unraveling truth of my fate, something inside my chest finally, completely snapped.

The humiliation, the rejection, and the agonizing realization that my own sister and father had orchestrated my ruin, it all converged into a single point of absolute, blinding fury.

The raw, chaotic magic of the blood moon bleeding through the window tore into my anatomy. My dormant wolf, the one I had spent my entire life suppressing just to be a good, quiet daughter, didn't just wake up.

She exploded.

Lorelei stepped forward and placed a hand on my shoulder but I swiped at her face before I could stop myself. Her eyes widened and I stared at her blankly in shock as blood dripped down her face. I glance down at my hands, a soundless gasp escaping my lips. My fingers have now been replaced by claws, bloodied claws.

Without waiting to shift completely, I stormed out of the room and into the dark woods, ignoring the red sky signaling the peak of the blood moon night.

Tears blurred my vision and I tripped over a tree, crashing hard into the dirt. I heaved and tried to scramble up but a suffocating weight pushed down on my back, sending me further into the dirt. I used all of my strength to push backwards before rolling on my back.

“Lorelei?” I froze, my eyes growing wide as she sent her foot flying into my stomach before I could get up .

I screamed in agony as pain shot through me. She smirked, raising her leg and bringing it down again on the same spot. Air seized from my lungs and I heard the squelching of blood in my belly.

‘Oh moon goddess, protect my child’

"Lorelei... why?" I choked out, watching the silver dagger in between her fingers gleaming under the bloody sky. "We're sisters."

"Sisters?" She laughed bitterly, wiping the blood trickling from the scratch I’d given her. "You're nothing, Brooke. Dad never wanted you, and Reid never loved you. You were just keeping the seat warm until I became Luna."

"He did. He’s the father of my child," I whispered.

"Not anymore," she sneered, then bent over me.

I gasped, my eyes widening as the silver blade lunged straight into my heart, the poison instantly flooding my veins. The crunch of heavy footsteps grabbed my attention and Reid stepped into view, sweat dropping down his shirt as though he’d been running, with the same indifference still plastered on his face as he inched closer.

“R-“ I spurted out blood, weakly raising a hand. “Reid, p-please.”

Lorelei leaned in, whispering in my ear and shielding him from my view, “Goodbye, sister. Thanks for the ring.”

She ripped the blade out. I clutched my heart to stop the bleed but it was no use.

As the darkness took over, my pain vanished, replaced by a final, burning vow in defeated weakness as a lone tear rolled down my cheek:

‘I will tear hell apart to come back for your souls.’

With one last breath, I closed my eyes and my heart stilled.
