Chapter 3

Pitch black eyes. Cold. Empty.

I clutched the edges of the bed subconsciously as they settled on me. Blood rushed into my veins and made its way harshly into my skull. I grabbed the sheets tightly, forcing myself to look away but they drew me in.

My body froze in place. Fear coursed through my veins, my instincts telling me to run. I couldn’t even if I wanted to. The room was suffocating, my lungs were closing up and I couldn’t breathe.

He was staring at me, eyes unmoving. His presence occupied the entire room, Reid disappearing into the background as we held each other’s gaze.

“Your Grace. I didn’t know you'd be back so soon.” Reid broke the thick silence in the room and even then, I dared not to look away.

He had me pinned in place. I feared if I breathed, it’ll be my last. There was something intensely chilling about this man that made my skin crawl and my body obey.

I didn’t like it. I didn’t like him.

Still trapped under his gaze, he took a step forward and I instinctively pushed back up to the bed, swallowing hard. He didn’t stop walking until he was standing right in front of me, his scent now slipping in through my nose and invading my senses.

It felt like a challenge. Like he wanted me to look away and to cower in fear from his presence. It didn’t look like the Queen could look him in the eyes. It didn’t look like he loved the Queen. In fact, it looked like he controlled her every breath and loathed her.

I liked that he didn’t. It’d make things easier for me. Deciding to play along, I tore my gaze away but his next words had me looking up again.

“Dismiss the Queen.”

Three words. Not a single one acknowledged her.

He watched me for a few more seconds before turning back around and storming out of the room. Nothing about him suggested he was angry. No. All I felt was his immense hatred for his wife and the authority radiating off him.

When I finally looked up at Reid, he looked pissed. The total erasure of him by the King had hit him hard enough to make him red with anger. My heart soared with a satisfaction I didn’t know it could achieve.

From what I’d just seen, they didn’t get along with each other despite being in laws. It made his anger a bit understandable. Reid was an Alpha, a respected one at that. I’ve never seen anyone look him in the eye or dared to disrespect him. Seeing the King do that to him was eye candy. It felt good.

For once in my entire life, he didn’t seem like the hero I used to think he was. For once, he was beneath someone and I would make sure he stays there.

“R-Reid.” I called out in the softest voice I could muster.

I almost gagged at how I sounded. Her voice was meek and soft like that of a doll. I could instantly tell she was a spoiled brat who was used to getting everything she wanted. It also didn’t sound like she was much of a talker and that made sense.

Having a husband like the king would make anyone shrink into the background.

Reid rushed to me instantly, cradling my head in his palms as he tried hard to comfort me. He was struggling to keep his anger at bay and I could see just how much he was willing to endure for his sister.

“I’m sorry, Jade. Forget about him and let him take you home. I’ll be at the pack in a few minutes. I promise, I’ll get you out of this hellhole someday.”

Maybe not, Reid. Maybe not.

I tried to fake a smile but even my face hurts like hell. Nodding, I turned away as disgust started to overwhelm me again. This man was truly irritating in every sense and I had to now deal with him for the next one year.

I’d never been good with pretence but if it meant I got to take him down, then I’d make sure to sync myself with this until I got to the finish line.

As if noticing my uneasiness, he backed away and that’s when I noticed two nurses walking into the room with absolute horror etched on their faces. I knew exactly why.

He had that effect on everyone and I just wonder how Jade managed to get herself involved with a man like that.

“Your Majesty, The King has requested for your presence.” One of them bowed to me, her lips quivering.

I glanced at Reid and he nodded in reassurance.

The nurses gently lifted me off the bed, disconnecting all the wires attached to my body as the doctor watched in silence. It seemed like he’d been frozen in time even though his eyes were still moving. It suddenly made the thought of having to be in the same space with the King exceptionally terrifying.

I didn’t think I’d know how to act when we’re left alone. What if he killed me?

The walk outside to the garage was shorter than I’d wanted it to be but I braced myself for what was to come. Cold air slashes across my face and I shivered, biting my lips to stop them from shaking as they led me towards a car that had the exact color of his eyes.

A sigh of relief left my lips when they opened the car and he wasn’t in sight, only a man in dark brown suit sitting behind the wheel. Maybe he’d decided to leave without me.

My excitement was cut short when I heard an unfamiliar voice cut through the air, earning a shocked gasp from me

“The other car.”

I allowed the nurses spin me around in the direction of the voice and my heart nearly leapt out of my throat when I looked behind the straight man sitting in the driver’s seat.

He was seated in the back seat of the car, his eyes solely focused on me and this time, the gaze in his eyes were different.

He looked mad.

I pressed myself against the car door and kept my eyes closed, counting the time until I could get out of this suffocating space with him.Just like I’d expected, he didn’t acknowledge me and I didn’t know if that made me feel better or worse especially since I knew he was fuming. The air around him exuded nothing but control and power. It was almost like every breathe he took seized mine into the confines of my own body and I couldn’t get it out. It was taking longer than ever to get to wherever we were headed and I dared not to turn my body in his direction, even though I’d been glancing at him secretly. His jawline was set in a hard line and I could almost taste the anger on my lips from just staring at it. His posture was as straight as a ruler as he looked straight ahead, almost not blinking at all. He looked li

Chapter 2Beep. Beep. Beep. The beeping of the monitor didn’t sound like death. It sounded like a high pitched metallic shriek vibrating through my skull.“Call the doctor! The Queen is breathing!” Someone screamed from afar.A sharp, suffocating pain pierced through my chest, forcing me to gasp as air violently flooded my lungs. I tried to sit up, but the crushing weight on my torso made me arch my back and cry out. The voice that slipped past my lips wasn't my own, it was a high, fragile sound that felt utterly foreign.I blinked through a blinding, white glare. The dark woods, the mud, and the crimson blood moon were completely gone. Instead, bright fluorescent lights burned my retinas, and a chaotic blur of doctors in blue scrubs rushed toward my bedside.Instinctively, my shaky hands flew to my chest, expecting to feel the sticky warmth of my own blood and the deep wound where Lorelei had driven her silver dagger. It wasn’t there. My fingers brushed against smooth, premium silk.

Knowing there was only one place he could be, I bolted up the stairs and came to a stop in front of a familiar door, my cheeks already hurting from the wide smile plastered on my face. I inhaled sharply and twisted the doorknob, pushing the door open.Slowly, the smile slipped off my face as I watched the sight in front of me unfold. For a second, my heart stopped beating and the wheels in my head turned furiously in confusion. Just like I’d thought, my fiancé, Reid, was here. But he wasn’t alone. Standing in
