Lucien POV

I closed my eyes. Felt the cold silver blade pressing against my neck. It was sharp enough to draw blood. I did not move. The small pain was nothing compared to the smell of fresh lilies that filled the small room. The smell was strong. Washed over me, making me forget about the dust and the smell of lightning from outside.

In the dark, five hundred years disappeared.

I remembered the High Conservatory of the Sun Palace. It smelled of soil and warm glass. I was two hundred years old

Lucien POVI closed my eyes. Felt the cold silver blade pressing against my neck. It was sharp enough to draw blood. I did not move. The small pain was nothing compared to the smell of fresh lilies that filled the small room. The smell was strong. Washed over me, making me forget about the dust and the smell of lightning from outside. In the dark, five hundred years disappeared.I remembered the High Conservatory of the Sun Palace. It smelled of soil and warm glass. I was two hundred years old then, wearing armor with silver clasps on my high collar. My leather gloves were covered in blood from a fight a few hours before. I did not like flowers or gardens. I walked through the glass doors because the noise from the meeting rooms was giving me a headache.Sunlight came through the glass ceiling. Made bright squares on the white marble floor. Then I smelled something. It was not the perfume the ladies wore. It was sharp and sweet like cut lilies. The smell went to my lungs and made me s

Kael POVThe quartz door slammed shut behind us, and the sound of sirens outside was gone.Smoke was still coming out of the corridor. Inside the private quarters, the air was stale. It smelled like dust and cold stone and cedar. There was a copper lantern on the iron table. It made long shadows on the walls.I leaned on the stone table, my hands holding the edge hard. My knuckles were white. My chest was moving up and down fast, and my head hurt a lot. I was still feeling the sting of Mara's betrayal. It was making me really angry.Lucien was standing near the door. He took off his heavy coat. It was all torn and bloody, so he just let it drop on the floor. He had a white shirt underneath, but it was stained with blood too. There was frost on his boots. It was melting into little puddles on the quartz floor."Julian is taking care of the hatch," Lucien said, his voice really calm. "The High Council's people will take thirty minutes to get through the ice wall. We have some time."I l

Kael POVThe air in the archive was freezing. Water was dripping from a pipe above me, hitting the floorboards with a loud crack. I was staring at the letters on Julian's computer. Mara. That name was burning in my mind like a fire. She was the woman who gave me bandages. She was the woman who bought me soup when the clinic was flooded. She was the person who treated me like a human being. She was paid to take care of me. She got fifty thousand credits every year to raise me like an animal. I felt my knees giving way.The letters blurred before me. I remembered every time Mara smiled, told me to be careful, and pushed pills into my hand. Now every memory felt poisoned. I could not tell which parts were real."Kael," Lucien's voice was calling me from far away.I hit the floor. The cold stone was slapping my hands, making them feel numb. I was trying to breathe. I could not get any air. The walls were closing in on me. The shelves were tilting like a ship in a storm.I thought about th

Kael POVThe air in the archives beneath the Living City was thick with the smell of dust and old blood and stagnant river water. The lanterns cast flickering shadows on the walls. The sound of water echoed through the room, a steady beat that seemed to match the hum of the city's turbines above us.In the center of the room, an old vampire hung from an iron pillar, his wrists chained to the metal. The old vampire was Malakor, the archivist who had vanished from the High Council's records fifty years ago.His robes were all torn and stained with soot, and his skin was as white as bone.Lucien stood near the pillar, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The air around his boots was cold. Frost was spreading across the stone floor."Talk, man," Lucien said, his voice firm.Malakor slowly lifted his head, his neck creaking like twigs. He looked at Lucien, at me, and a crazy grin spread across his face."The Blood Sovereign," Malakor rasped, his voice like leaves scraping against con

Lucien POVThe Living City was alive and breathing. The walls made of quartz had a soft amber glow that went in and out like Kael's heartbeat. I carried him through the amber doors. My shoulder hurt where the statue had hit me. I did not care. Kael's body was limp against my chest. His skin was cold like mountain stone."Julian," I said.Julian was at my side. He had a flashlight. The beam cut through the quiet air."My lord?" he asked."Find a place for Kael to rest. He is very sick."Julian looked around. Then, he pointed to a building made of white quartz with doors made of solid amber."The central arch. It looks like a place where people can get help when they are sick."Rin was trying to keep up with us. He had a bag, and he was holding it tight."Kael is in shock, Lucien. If his heart does not get better, it will hurt his brain. We need to get him warm."I did not say anything. I pushed the amber doors open with my shoulder. The room smelled like dried flowers and something els

Kael POVThe hall just disappeared. It was like the whole room vanished into the air. The statues started moving. They made this really loud noise, like the sound of the earth moving. They had stone swords that whistled through the air and made these arcs of purple fire in the darkness.Lucien was moving fast. I could barely see him. He was like a blur with a sword, and every time he blocked a hit from the statues, it made sparks fly everywhere. He was fighting with this wild style, and his back was pressed up against mine. I could feel the heat coming from his skin. It was like he was ready to pounce."Get behind the dais!" Lucien yelled. He pushed me towards the back of the hall. This huge stone warrior was looming over us, and its face was a blank stone slab. It swung this mace down and smashed the marble floor where I was standing just a second before. I scrambled backward. My hands were scraping against the cold stone."Lucien!" I screamed. He was surrounded by five of these warr
