Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
I glanced over at Tammy, then asked icily, "You make good money with your influencer side hustle, right? So, how about you cover part of this for me? By the way, you still owe me for the gas from those three months I drove you to and from work when you were pregnant last year."

Tammy's face went pale in an instant.

Her Instagram account was built on a fake rich-woman persona using my car and bags. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to know about this.

She hemmed and hawed for a long moment before finally blurting, "It's not like I forced you to do it!"

Then, she turned tail and fled.

I then looked at Pete and said, "Just yesterday, I was still working overtime cleaning up the mess from that project you handed in before the holidays. You say I was just pretending to work late? Fine, then hand over that project bonus right now."

Pete's face flushed a deep red, and he fell silent.

Nicki, seeing how things were going and knowing she was in the wrong, muttered something about going to get water and bolted in a flash.

I sat and opened the encrypted files on my computer. Inside were all the records of expenses I had fronted for the company over the past five years. Every single item was clearly marked, and I compiled all the receipts into a spreadsheet.

My colleagues kept sneaking glances my way. But after I'd just publicly shut down Tammy and Pete, they only dared huddle together and mutter under their breath.

"Look at her, all serious like that. Does she really plan to go head-to-head with Wayne?"

"Please. What's she going to do? Whip out a bunch of evidence that Wayne owes her money?"

"She's just all talk. In the end, she'll fall in line and pay up like a good girl."

Wayne, hearing the commotion, poked his head out of his office. He took one look and scoffed.

"I don't care what stunt you pull—you're not getting out of paying a single dime. If you know what's good for you, you'll wire me the money now. Don't make the whole office wait for their afternoon tea."

"I'll settle the accounts, alright. But you don't get to decide who owes what or how it's calculated," I replied coldly.

Once I finished saving all the files onto a flash drive, I stood and left without saying another word.

Wayne shouted after me angrily, "Now you're throwing a tantrum like some kind of princess? Tammy, mark her down for leaving early and dock four thousand dollars from her paycheck this month!"

My monthly salary was only 3,500 dollars. In five years, I hadn't gotten a single raise. Even Nicki made more than I did.

In the past, I'd told myself that it was because the company wasn't doing well. But now, it was clear that Wayne simply thought I was only worth that much.

Wayne was convinced I couldn't afford to lose this job, so he expected me to crawl back and apologize. However, I turned a deaf ear and walked straight out the company doors.

After I sent the documents to my lawyer, Jerome Slater, I immediately dialed another number.

"Hello, is this the property manager, Chester Dyer? I'm Meredith Burch. At 9:00 am tomorrow, I want the water and power shut off for Springen Corporation on the 18th floor. And don't turn them back on until I say so."

Springen's biggest client was due to arrive tomorrow morning.

If I had to suffer, I was going to make sure they all suffered with me.

The next morning, Wayne was already waiting at my workstation. He slapped the bill onto my desk with a loud smack.

"Meredith, don't forget that today is the final deadline. You must wire the money before the end of the workday."

I lowered my head, feigning submission.

"Got it. I'll pull the money together and wire it to you today for sure."

Thoroughly smug, Wayne raised his voice as if he was afraid the others wouldn't know he had me under his thumb.

"If you'd been this sensible from the start, we could've avoided all this drama. A little debt is exactly what you young people need to work harder."

With that, he turned and walked away, satisfied.

I texted Chester again, instructing him to cut off the power and water on time.

I set my phone down and got up to get some water from the break room, only to unexpectedly overhear Wayne gloating on the phone in his office.

"With her measly salary and now all this debt, she'll be completely at my mercy from now on. As soon as I get the chance, I'll swoop in and snatch all her big clients. A worthless employee like her lucks into a couple of wins, and suddenly she thinks she's irreplaceable?"

Wayne's laughter was grating.

I swallowed my anger and looked at the clock.

At 8:57 am, Wayne walked out of his office.

"I'm going downstairs to meet Mr. Kurt Wilkins. Get the coffee ready."

At 8:59 am, he stepped into the elevator.

I counted down silently in my mind.

Three, two, one!

At 9:00 am sharp, the entire floor of the company went pitch black. The computer screen went dark, and the internet cut out.

The elevator to the 18th floor was one I had installed separately, and it too was connected to the main power switch. The moment the switch was thrown, the elevator carrying Wayne stopped dead between the 17th and 18th floors.

My colleagues were immediately in an uproar.

"Crap! I haven't saved my work yet."

"Why did the power suddenly go out?"

A second later, Mr. Wilkins and his entourage stepped out of another elevator.

A week later, the court summons was formally delivered into Wayne's hands. By then, he had just been released on bail pending trial.Multiple charges weighed on his shoulders, and his household was in utter shambles. One by one, every single client terminated their contracts with the company. In the span of a single week, Springen Corporation declared bankruptcy. When Wayne received the summons, he suffered a heart attack on the spot and was rushed into the ICU.During this period, Bianca sent people to negotiate with me multiple times. As long as I would drop all lawsuits, she was willing to pay double compensation for the 600 thousand dollars owed and promised to give me a public apology.I held my ground and steadfastly refused. The last time I turned Bianca down, I asked her why she kept persisting. Her face was ashen and haggard, as if she'd aged ten years."No matter what, Wayne is still Trevor's father. If something happens to him, Trevor will be shunned by others in the

My words hit like a bolt out of the blue.Bianca's mouth hung wide open, her tantrum-throwing motions frozen mid-gesture. Her face twisted into a grotesque mask, her lips trembling as she asked me, "W-What do you mean?"The patients and family members who had been watching the spectacle also fell instantly silent, their eyes brimming with a gossipy look and probing curiosity.I glanced at Bianca and pulled up the photos I'd long saved on my phone. The images showed Tammy at her prenatal check-ups, with Wayne right by her side. The two were intimately close, acting every bit like a married couple. It went well beyond what was appropriate between a boss and an employee. There were also Tammy's Instagram posts, selfie after selfie with veiled declarations of love, where a man always appeared in the background, showing only a hand or a neck. From the accessories, it was easy to tell the man was Wayne. One of the rings was even a matching couple's set with Bianca's own."What I'm say

By the time I reached the hospital and approached the door to Wayne's ward, the hysterical cursing from inside was already spilling out into the hallway.Wayne was on the phone, raging about how ungrateful I was and how I'd schemed and set him up.I smiled and pushed the door open, walking in.Wayne was propped up against the hospital bed. The moment he saw me enter, his eyes went bloodshot.Ignoring the nurse trying to hold him back, he made as if to jump out of the bed."Meredith, you've got some nerve showing up here! I'm telling you, if you don't drop the lawsuit today, don't even think about leaving this ward!"But the moment he saw the police officers following behind me, Wayne's expression instantly changed.Bianca, sensing things had taken a bad turn, threw herself onto the floor and began throwing a fit."Everyone, judge for yourselves! Is there no justice left in this world? Wayne poured himself into this business, never imagining the person he brought on board would

One by one, my colleagues stepped forward to plead with me. All the sharp-tongued nastiness of the past had transformed into groveling ingratiation.I swept my gaze over each panicked face and felt nothing but contempt."When I offered you all my genuine goodwill before, how did you treat me? You sucked up to power and kicked me when I was down. Not one of you remembered my kindness. Now that it's time to face the consequences, you finally know fear. Too bad it's far too late."Chester, following my instructions, distributed the compiled copies of evidence to each person.Screenshots of defamatory Instagram posts and chat records were clearly laid out. These were all the pieces of proof I'd quietly collected over five years, every single time I was stabbed in the back.A few of them went weak at the knees just looking at it and crumpled to the floor."Meredith, I was just a loudmouth with a rotten tongue. I'm sorry. I'll do anything you want. My son is about to take the civil ser

Wayne's hands trembled violently as he held the paper. A few seconds later, his eyes rolled back, and he passed out on the spot. The moment he fainted, the paper in his hand fluttered to the floor. Some curious colleagues crowded around to take a look, and every single person who saw it had their expression change instantly. They exchanged glances, yet not one of them dared to say a single word.Tammy, not knowing what had happened, shouted anxiously, "What's wrong with you all? Wayne's passed out. Why isn't anyone calling an ambulance?"The building's on-site medic arrived and checked on Wayne.Wayne had simply fainted from lack of oxygen in the elevator, combined with extreme emotional agitation. The ambulance arrived in due time and took Wayne away.Only then did the paper make its way into Tammy's hands. She shone a flashlight and stared at it intently. It was a civil complaint, and the defendants were Wayne and all employees of Springen Corporation. It demanded that Wayn

The company's front doors were shut tight, and the office area was plunged into pitch darkness.Mr. Wilkins' brows furrowed into a deep knot."Where is Wayne? What on earth is going on with your company?"Tammy fumbled frantically for her phone to call Wayne, only to discover that there was no signal. The call wouldn't go through at all."Mr. Wilkins, there's a power outage. Wayne… He went downstairs to meet you."Mr. Wilkins' expression grew even sterner."Nonsense! Every floor we passed on our way up had power. How could only yours be blacked out?"Wayne pounded desperately on the elevator doors, his muffled voice echoing from inside."Mr. Wilkins, I'm in here! I'm trapped in the elevator!"Mr. Wilkin's expression darkened further.Wayne, sensing disaster, quickly said, "Mr. Wilkins, please don't be upset. I'll contact the property management right now."He pulled out his phone, only to remember that for all these years, I had been the one handling all the communication wi
