RHYSAND'S POV

"Ring..." The sudden buzz of my phone against the nightstand startled me to consciousness.

"Who the fuck has the guts to call this ear—" I barely completed it as I saw the three letters reflecting on my phone's screen.

"What do you want Mr. Warner?” I asked, gruffly pulling the sheets off my body.

"Is that a good way to greet your father? And what's with the formalities?" He asked, making me pinch the bridge of my nose.

"You're calling me by 5am in the morning, and you want me to address you informally? It's not like you have a business for me.” I retorted, listening to the sound of his hiss over the phone.

"Well, I got the news that you fired your secretary and that is not my business, but I've been trying to reach you for the past three days now, which has proven futile.”

"It'd have been better if it remained that way," I mumbled incoherently.

"Whatever," He said, clearing his throat before starting again.

"Well, I need you to be available by 9pm today,"

"Why?" I cut in sharply.

"Because I need you to meet Margrett," He said, and I stilled as though I was struck by lightning.

"I'm not interested," I said, moving to hang up when he spoke up again.

"Yes you will be, Rhys," He said, ascertaining his authority.

"You should not use that tone with me..."

"Yes, I will Rhys, I've been trying to reach you for days now, to let you know beforehand and you think you can reject me? Come on, don't be so selfish," He said, persuading.

“No,” I said flatly, leaning back against the headboard.

“You didn't even let me explain why,” he countered, his tone growing sharper.

“Don’t need to. If it involves you, it’s not worth my time.”

“Cut the sarcasm, Rhys,” he snapped. “This is serious. I want you to meet her.”

“No thanks,” I said, already moving to hang up.

“Wait,” he said quickly. “It’s not just Margrette. Her daughter will be there too. This is about bringing the two families together.”

I froze, my thumb hovering over the end call button. “Her daughter?”

“Yes, her daughter. I’d like you to meet them both,” he said, softening his tone as if that would change my mind.

“I don’t care about your new ‘family,’” I replied coldly. “This is your decision, not mine.”

“Rhys,” he said, exasperated. “This isn’t just for me. Margaret and her daughter are important to me. And whether you like it or not, they’re going to be part of my life. I want you to meet them.”

I stayed silent, weighing my options.

“She’s nervous about meeting you, you know,” he continued. “Margrette keeps saying she hopes you’ll like her. And her daughter, well… she’s heard a lot about you.”

“Let me guess,” I drawled. “None of it is good.”

“You’d be surprised,” he said. “She’s curious, she wants to know what kind of man my son is.”

I let out a bitter laugh. “Disappointed, probably.”

“Rhys,” he said, his voice firm but gentle. “I know we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things. But this isn’t just about me. It’s about giving them a chance. One dinner. That’s all I’m asking.”

“I don’t do ‘family bonding,’” I shot back.

“You don’t have to bond. Just show up. Be civil,” he said. “Margrette will be thrilled, and… well, it’d mean a lot to me.”

I closed my eyes, leaning my head back against the headboard. The sincerity in his voice was irritating.

“And if I don’t show up?”

“Then I’ll call you every hour until you do.” he replied.

“Blackmail. Nice.”

“Call it whatever you want,” he said. “But I’m not taking no for an answer. 9 p.m,  Rhys. Be there.”

Before I could respond, another voice came through the line. A woman’s.

“Is that him?” she asked.

“Margrette.” My father said warmly,  and I could swear that was the sweetest I'd heard in years. “Yes, it’s him.”

“Hello, Rhysand,” she said, her tone light but slightly hesitant. “I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.” she said, her voice was jolly and for the first time, I felt something breaking the cold ice idea I had about her.

“Likewise.” I said dryly.

She let out a soft laugh, but it didn’t sound forced. “Your father talks about you a lot, you know. He’s very proud of you.”

“Is that so?” I said, glancing at the clock.

“Yes.”  she said. “And… I know this might be awkward for you, meeting us like this. But I’d really like for us to get to know each other.”

“I’ll think about it.” I said, knowing full well I’d already lost the battle.

“Thank you.” she said, sounding genuinely relieved.

“And, Rhys.” My father added, his tone serious. “You’ll make it on time, right?”

I sighed heavily. “Fine, 9pm.  Don’t expect miracles.”

"But it's because your new wife sounded like she was worth it.” I mumbled incoherently to myself.

“That’s all I needed to hear.” he said, clearly pleased with himself.

“Great,” I muttered before hanging up.

I tossed the phone onto the bed and stared at the ceiling.

Dinner with Margrette and her daughter.

What could possibly go wrong? Except that a lot went wrong.

By 8:30pm, I was outside with my chauffeur when I saw her—Bridgette—waving down a taxi.

Her face was lazy as it seemed more like she was forced to head wherever she wanted to.

"Mr Rhysand." My driver called, opening the car door for me to get in. And as soon as I did, he sped down the highway.

********

I slipped out of the car and adjusted my jacket as the cool night air hit me. The valet opened the door, and I made my way toward the entrance, when my eyes caught a familiar figure at the door.

I stopped in my tracks, narrowing my eyes, my God-forsaken calamity.

Of course, she was here. Just my luck.

I groaned inwardly and kept walking, before I turned back abruptly.

"Are you following me, Hayes?" I snapped, watching her click her tongue angrily at my words.

"Bridgette, Mr. Rhys. My name is Bridgette.” she retorted.

"Call me Rhysand and I might consider calling you by your name.” I said and watched her hiss as she walked away from me.

“Look, I don’t have time for whatever game you’re trying to play," I said. "I'm not interested in arguing with you around, and I sure as hell don’t want you following me."

“Follow you?” She laughed dryly. “I’d rather feed a chicken than be caught trailing after you.”

I scoffed, turning back to the door. “Fine. Do whatever you want. Just stay out of my way.”

We both entered the restaurant at the same time, and I scoffed at whatever ridiculous attempt she was trying to play.

"It seems like you're the one who's following me now Mr. Rhys," She snapped, rolling her eyes as we both clicked the same elevator buttons.

"You wish," I snapped as the elevator moved upwards, stopping at the same floor.

"We'll see who's following who now," I said, turning back at her while she walked behind me to the room.

"Get off me now, Hayes. I won't take responsibility if the guards throw you out," I added but she gave no response and showed her card to the guard instead.

"This must be a mistake, why are you…"

"Mom?" Bridgette called, sending waves of shock through my body.

"Dad?" I muttered, calling my father who was smiling at the woman in front of him.

"Wait, what?" We both blurted, shocked at the ducking twist of what was happening.

"He's your father? And..."

"She's your mom?" I yelled, my voice louder than it ever had.

"What the fuck is this!" We both yelled, our eyes wide at the unbelievable turns of events.

"My mother and your father?!"

"Impossible!" We stamped, staring at the horror stricken couple.

Bridgette's POVRhys's words followed me down to my office, putting me in suspense. Not the bad kind. I was beginning to realize that he had a way of keeping me grounded in the weirdest of ways, and somehow I liked it—expected it even. I strolled out of the elevator and headed down the hall, the employees each busy with their work. I glanced toward Jennie's desk, which was empty, finding it kind of odd.Where was she? I couldn't remember if she had any outside work. Before I could fret much over her absence, the truth was revealed in a few steps. The moment I opened my office door, I stopped short, confused and shocked. The supposedly busy Jennie and Tessa stood by my desk, hovering over a black silk box wrapped in a silver bow.Right on top was a white card I couldn't read immediately, but as I drew closer, Payne's name flashed in gold flourish across it along with the message: "Surprise! Open me, please. I'll be waiting," scribbled across it. I frowned, wondering when the heck Payne

RHYSAND’S POVI leaned against my chair, still struggling to process Rosa's shocking news.Bridgette had stepped out of the office for more than a few hours without anyone being the wiser.Where had she gone? And why hadn't she mentioned it to me during dinner?Could it have had something to do with the mystery man who sent her flowers? I couldn't help but think back to dinner last night and her behavior. Nothing about the way she spoke had suggested that she knew him. She was a bit shifty, but at that time I believed it was nothing but nerves.Thinking about it now, I couldn't help but wonder if maybe it had to do with something else.I soon gave up the thought of figuring it all out and focused on signing the last of the documents I had for the day when I heard a soft knock.Absentmindedly, I answered without looking up, "Come in.""Surprise!" Margaret beamed, walking in with a large lunch basket, while Rosa shuffled behind her looking guilty."Mr. Rhysand, I'm so sorry... she came o

RHYSAND’S POV I sat at my desk, flipping through the thick file marked Clarkson & Co. It had been days since the first official meeting with their new CEO, and something about it all still gnawed at me.Joe, the financial director's voice echoed in my head. "Be careful, Mr. Rhysand. The new CEO of Clarkson and Co. is a bit cunning. Although there isn't any proof, rumor has it that he never plays fair. There's a reason he's called a shark."Although I hadn't taken his words seriously at the time, as I went through the contract details for our partnership, his words from the meeting flashed through my mind."I hope you are well aware of the contract clause, Mr. Warner. The 80 percent loss incentive?"Why he would remind me of such a clause, especially at a time like that, bothered me.That was why I had Rosa run a background check on them. Although she hadn't found anything damning, I had insisted she compile the full audit report from Clarkson and Co. since Elias took over, and maybe

BRIDGETTE POVDinner was one of those picture-perfect family moments you see in movies, except for the homely ambiance and the fact that we were just four people—the rest of the feeling was on point. There was a fancy dining table, candles flickering despite the overhead light, and soft classical music hummed in the background. It was safe to say Margaret had outdone herself this evening and was basking in the praises from both Aaron and Rhysand. The room was filled with warm laughter, mostly from my mother and Aaron. It was almost bittersweet watching them be so happy in each other's hold. A twinge of envy crossed my mind at the thought of my happy ending.Of course, I wanted my mother to be happy, and it was cruel of me to feel anything less than happiness for them, but I couldn't push away the thought of having exactly what she did. And for a while, I battled with myself over those feelings."So... did you find out who sent you the flowers?" Rhysand asked as he reached for the glas

Clarkson's POVThe moment the words slipped out of my mouth, I knew I had said the wrong thing. It was in the way her eyes had twitched at my double meaning, her face paled under the setting sun, and a flicker of something between anger and shock passed her almost expressionless face."I don't mean anything by it," I hurriedly countered, my brain thinking of a way to get out of this situation. "What I mean is—""It's okay," she waved her hands, brushing away the explanation with a polite smile. "You aren't wrong. Rhysand is my stepbrother. Sometimes I tend to forget."Although she had spoken with a smile, I could see the rapport I had managed to gain slowly fade with each passing second.Shit. This was proving harder than I thought it would be. Our conversation slowly lulled into a tense silence that no amount of explanation or apologies could soothe, but still I tried."I'm sorry... that was no way to talk... I overstepped," I insisted, rubbing a hand over my neck. "It was uncalled f

  • The Boss I Shouldn't Want, Now My Stepbrother    Chapter 119

Bridgette's POVThis wasn't right. I knew it. I understood it like the back of my hand—I knew it was a mistake the moment I decided to go along with Elias's plans. From the very moment he'd called, something had felt off. His pleading that I see him hadn't felt like something that should have happened, especially when we were hardly friends, but I felt guilty from giving away his flowers, and deep down inside me, I was curious about why he wanted to talk to me privately. As I walked out of my office, I gave a soft sigh of relief to find Jennie away from her desk, and I quickly took the stairs down and sneaked out through the side door, away from prying eyes. For whatever reason, it felt right that I do things like this, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why."It's just a simple coffee," I muttered to myself as I walked out of the door and toward the direction where he had parked his car, but a tiny voice—the one that usually acted as a voice of reason—wasn't fully on board
