RHYSAND'S POV

"Ring..." The sudden buzz of my phone against the nightstand startled me to consciousness.

"Who the fuck has the guts to call this ear—" I barely completed it as I saw the three letters reflecting on my phone's screen.

"What do you want Mr. Warner?” I asked, gruffly pulling the sheets off my body.

"Is that a good way to greet your father? And what's with the formalities?" He asked, making me pinch the bridge of my nose.

"You're calling me by 5am in the morning, and you want me to address you informally? It's not like you have a business for me.” I retorted, listening to the sound of his hiss over the phone.

"Well, I got the news that you fired your secretary and that is not my business, but I've been trying to reach you for the past three days now, which has proven futile.”

"It'd have been better if it remained that way," I mumbled incoherently.

"Whatever," He said, clearing his throat before starting again.

"Well, I need you to be available by 9pm today,"

"Why?" I cut in sharply.

"Because I need you to meet Margrett," He said, and I stilled as though I was struck by lightning.

"I'm not interested," I said, moving to hang up when he spoke up again.

"Yes you will be, Rhys," He said, ascertaining his authority.

"You should not use that tone with me..."

"Yes, I will Rhys, I've been trying to reach you for days now, to let you know beforehand and you think you can reject me? Come on, don't be so selfish," He said, persuading.

“No,” I said flatly, leaning back against the headboard.

“You didn't even let me explain why,” he countered, his tone growing sharper.

“Don’t need to. If it involves you, it’s not worth my time.”

“Cut the sarcasm, Rhys,” he snapped. “This is serious. I want you to meet her.”

“No thanks,” I said, already moving to hang up.

“Wait,” he said quickly. “It’s not just Margrette. Her daughter will be there too. This is about bringing the two families together.”

I froze, my thumb hovering over the end call button. “Her daughter?”

“Yes, her daughter. I’d like you to meet them both,” he said, softening his tone as if that would change my mind.

“I don’t care about your new ‘family,’” I replied coldly. “This is your decision, not mine.”

“Rhys,” he said, exasperated. “This isn’t just for me. Margaret and her daughter are important to me. And whether you like it or not, they’re going to be part of my life. I want you to meet them.”

I stayed silent, weighing my options.

“She’s nervous about meeting you, you know,” he continued. “Margrette keeps saying she hopes you’ll like her. And her daughter, well… she’s heard a lot about you.”

“Let me guess,” I drawled. “None of it is good.”

“You’d be surprised,” he said. “She’s curious, she wants to know what kind of man my son is.”

I let out a bitter laugh. “Disappointed, probably.”

“Rhys,” he said, his voice firm but gentle. “I know we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things. But this isn’t just about me. It’s about giving them a chance. One dinner. That’s all I’m asking.”

“I don’t do ‘family bonding,’” I shot back.

“You don’t have to bond. Just show up. Be civil,” he said. “Margrette will be thrilled, and… well, it’d mean a lot to me.”

I closed my eyes, leaning my head back against the headboard. The sincerity in his voice was irritating.

“And if I don’t show up?”

“Then I’ll call you every hour until you do.” he replied.

“Blackmail. Nice.”

“Call it whatever you want,” he said. “But I’m not taking no for an answer. 9 p.m,  Rhys. Be there.”

Before I could respond, another voice came through the line. A woman’s.

“Is that him?” she asked.

“Margrette.” My father said warmly,  and I could swear that was the sweetest I'd heard in years. “Yes, it’s him.”

“Hello, Rhysand,” she said, her tone light but slightly hesitant. “I’ve been looking forward to meeting you.” she said, her voice was jolly and for the first time, I felt something breaking the cold ice idea I had about her.

“Likewise.” I said dryly.

She let out a soft laugh, but it didn’t sound forced. “Your father talks about you a lot, you know. He’s very proud of you.”

“Is that so?” I said, glancing at the clock.

“Yes.”  she said. “And… I know this might be awkward for you, meeting us like this. But I’d really like for us to get to know each other.”

“I’ll think about it.” I said, knowing full well I’d already lost the battle.

“Thank you.” she said, sounding genuinely relieved.

“And, Rhys.” My father added, his tone serious. “You’ll make it on time, right?”

I sighed heavily. “Fine, 9pm.  Don’t expect miracles.”

"But it's because your new wife sounded like she was worth it.” I mumbled incoherently to myself.

“That’s all I needed to hear.” he said, clearly pleased with himself.

“Great,” I muttered before hanging up.

I tossed the phone onto the bed and stared at the ceiling.

Dinner with Margrette and her daughter.

What could possibly go wrong? Except that a lot went wrong.

By 8:30pm, I was outside with my chauffeur when I saw her—Bridgette—waving down a taxi.

Her face was lazy as it seemed more like she was forced to head wherever she wanted to.

"Mr Rhysand." My driver called, opening the car door for me to get in. And as soon as I did, he sped down the highway.

I slipped out of the car and adjusted my jacket as the cool night air hit me. The valet opened the door, and I made my way toward the entrance, when my eyes caught a familiar figure at the door.

I stopped in my tracks, narrowing my eyes, my God-forsaken calamity.

Of course, she was here. Just my luck.

I groaned inwardly and kept walking, before I turned back abruptly.

"Are you following me, Hayes?" I snapped, watching her click her tongue angrily at my words.

"Bridgette, Mr. Rhys. My name is Bridgette.” she retorted.

"Call me Rhysand and I might consider calling you by your name.” I said and watched her hiss as she walked away from me.

“Look, I don’t have time for whatever game you’re trying to play," I said. "I'm not interested in arguing with you around, and I sure as hell don’t want you following me."

“Follow you?” She laughed dryly. “I’d rather feed a chicken than be caught trailing after you.”

I scoffed, turning back to the door. “Fine. Do whatever you want. Just stay out of my way.”

We both entered the restaurant at the same time, and I scoffed at whatever ridiculous attempt she was trying to play.

"It seems like you're the one who's following me now Mr. Rhys," She snapped, rolling her eyes as we both clicked the same elevator buttons.

"You wish," I snapped as the elevator moved upwards, stopping at the same floor.

"We'll see who's following who now," I said, turning back at her while she walked behind me to the room.

"Get off me now, Hayes. I won't take responsibility if the guards throw you out," I added but she gave no response and showed her card to the guard instead.

"This must be a mistake, why are you…"

"Mom?" Bridgette called, sending waves of shock through my body.

"Dad?" I muttered, calling my father who was smiling at the woman in front of him.

"Wait, what?" We both blurted, shocked at the ducking twist of what was happening.

"He's your father? And..."

"She's your mom?" I yelled, my voice louder than it ever had.

"What the fuck is this!" We both yelled, our eyes wide at the unbelievable turns of events.

"My mother and your father?!"

"Impossible!" We stamped, staring at the horror stricken couple.

RhysandEvery once in a while, I am left speechless by my actions. Just like today, I had overslept.I, Rhysand Warner, had overslept, and no one had woken me up. The first thing I saw was sunlight bleeding past my curtains.Shit. I reached for my phone, and another expletive escaped my mouth. Past 9 a.m.I hadn't intended to stay up so late, much less talk to my father for more than five minutes, but last night had been different. For once, we hadn't argued about work or expectations. We'd sat by the pool, sipping aged scotch and talking about trivial things. My childhood, his. Old songs, and even a few stories about how he struggled to take care of me. Then he'd switched to Margaret, his love for her and how amazing she was. I couldn't remember the last time I had seen my father so emotional, so soft, like his marriage to Margaret had been the salvation he needed all along.Strangely, I was happy for him. Margaret was good for him, and I didn't regret the conversation. Not even as I

BridgetteI was losing my mind. I couldn't think or focus. My mind swirled at the thought of Rosa and Rhysand being in a relationship.Even their names matched, and I hated it."What's wrong with me!" I exhaled sharply, kicking away the stack of papers I had recently piled up after my first blowout. The mess was worse than before. Physically and mentally, my body felt heavy with the weight of my worries and hate.Hate? No—not hate, but jealousy. I hated that they could be together. That Rhysand could easily forget the kiss we shared.*The kiss you asked him to forget about,* a small voice echoed in my mind.I sighed and pushed myself up, then walked out of my office, unwilling to wallow, but wherever I went, the misery followed.I ignored Jennie's look of confusion and stormed down the hall toward the restroom. Not because I had to go, but because I simply needed somewhere to be, a motion to take my mind off things.Just as I reached for the door handle, I heard them. Two voices hidde

BridgetteExcept I already regretted acting that way. I should have just walked away the moment she'd stopped me—heck, I should have never left my office. As I walked back down, the piercing gaze and bright hall suddenly felt overwhelming, like I was walking down the hall of shame or something.Rosa's insistence that I couldn't see Rhysand made it all the worse. It was hard not to believe that they had something going on. No one would be that protective of someone they weren't dating. As the thought flashed by, I realized I was being biased. Rosa could have easily been doing her job. Rhysand could have ordered her not to let anyone in. But that didn't stop the hurt I felt.Halfway back to my office, I almost slammed into Tessa."Whoa," she said, steadying me. "Where's the fire?"I shook my head, avoiding her gaze, and tried to walk past, but she stepped into my path."Bridgette? Hey, look at me."I glanced up with a sigh, meeting her concerned gaze."Are you okay?" she asked. "You don

BridgetteJennie had been my secretary from the very beginning. She was good at her job, polite, and, best of all, minded her own business. Her presence in my office so early in the morning with that look in her eyes sent warning alarms through my head. But I schooled my expression, calling her in. "Yes, Jennie, is there something I can do for you?"She hesitated before stepping closer, her lips tugged into a frown. "I don't know if you've heard the rumors."I arched my brows, leaning back in my seat. "About Rhysand and his secretary?"She nodded, squeezing her hands."I just did," I said, picking up a pen. "What of it?""Yes, that and..." she confirmed before trailing off, as though unsure how to continue."Spit it out, Jennie. I don't have time for silly rumors."She shook her head. "There's nothing silly about these rumors, Ms. Hayes. It's quite the opposite. There might be some truth to it, ma'am.""What do you mean?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat."You might not know this, bu

BridgetteThe steady stream of sunlight spilled into my room, casting the soft hues of lavender and white in a warm tone. The warmth of the morning sun caressed my skin, and I found myself smiling.I turned toward the ceiling and stretched, the sound of bones popping echoing through the room, a soft sigh escaping my lips. It took only a minute for me to realize that I felt wonderful. There was no pain. No aches. Nothing. Not even the consistent pounding in my head from sleepless nights and blue screen usage. I felt fine. More than fine—I felt great, and it was all thanks to Rhysand. At the thought of his name, I flushed with embarrassment, jumping out of bed as the scene from yesterday flashed in my mind. The harsh words I had said and my rude actions. I had been horrible to him even when he'd meant no harm to me."What an idiot," I muttered, rushing toward the bathroom. Rhysand's forced day off that he'd shoved on me had pissed me off. I hated that he could order me around without li

  • The Boss I Shouldn't Want, Now My Stepbrother    Chapter 67

RhysandI made my way to my room and shut the door behind me. Leaning against the closed door, I willed my beating heart to calm down. The talk with Margaret had left me feeling worse than before.Things between us had been borderline hostile, which was solely my fault. Margaret had shown me nothing but kindness and understanding, but my anger toward Sandra's betrayal had left me with unresolved trauma. Our talk tonight had unveiled a part of her I had been pushing away for far too long. Margaret meant me no harm—there was a possibility that she liked me and, to a certain degree, understood me. The thought left me reeling with guilt that I couldn't explain."Ahhh, I don't want to think about this," I exhaled, pushing away from the door as my hand tugged at my tie.Why wasn't Margaret a bitch, or even a bit annoying? I wouldn't be feeling so shitty for having such feelings for her child. But then, if she was even half as terrible as my mother, she never would have gotten close to my fa
