POV: Evelyn

The mirror didn’t lie, but it didn’t tell the whole truth either.

I smoothed the front of my bone-white silk blouse, tucking it firmly into a black pencil skirt that hugged my frame. I looked professional. I looked put-together. I looked like a woman who hadn't spent the last month picking up the shattered pieces of her life.

I ran a brush through my waves one last time, letting them settle over my shoulders.

Breathe.

My heart was doing that frantic, uneven thrumming again. I pressed a palm to my chest, trying to anchor myself. Once I was sure my mask wouldn't slip, I grabbed my clutch and walked into the living room.

Shae was already there, her eyes glued to her phone. She looked up the second she heard my heels click against the floor, her expression softening into a supportive smile.

"Ready to do this?" she asked, standing up.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I murmured.

We stepped out into the humid Miami air. Shae locked the door with practiced efficiency while her thumb swiped across her screen, summoning an Uber.

Five minutes later, a sleek white Tesla pulled up to the curb. We slid into the back seat, the sudden blast of the AC feeling like a cold hand against my skin.

The drive took nearly thirty minutes. I watched Miami blur past—the palm trees, the vibrant street art, the sun-drenched chaos of a city that felt worlds away from the cold marble of Manhattan.

Then, the car slowed.

The Meridian Miami Building loomed ahead, a masterpiece of glass and steel reflecting the Atlantic. Above the entrance, the logo gleamed in brushed silver—bold, elegant, and intimidating.

I took a sharp breath before following Shae out of the car.

The moment we crossed the threshold of the automatic glass doors, a security guard at the marble desk stood up. He was sharp, professional, yet carried that effortless Florida friendliness.

"Good afternoon, ladies. How can I help you?"

"Hi. I have an appointment with Damian Vale in HR," Shae replied, her voice steady and commanding.

The guard nodded, gesturing toward the sleek bank of elevators.

"Third floor, ma'am. He just got back from lunch. You can head right up." He tapped a sensor, and the security gate buzzed open for us.

Shae gave him a polite nod. "Thanks."

We crossed the expansive lobby. The air was crisp, scented with a hint of sea salt and something expensive—a far cry from the stifling atmosphere of my old office at the Veridian Atrium. Every footfall on the polished floor felt like a step toward a new identity.

The third floor was quieter. Professional. The walls were lined with minimalist art, and the carpet dampened the sound of our movement. Shae stopped in front of a heavy oak door with a nameplate: Damian Vale, HR Manager.

She knocked three times. Crisp. Confident.

"Come in, it’s open," a deep, resonant voice called out.

Shae pushed the door open. Behind a desk cluttered with neatly stacked files sat a man in his early forties. He looked up, his face breaking into a wide grin the moment he recognized Shae.

"Shae Marlowe! Look at you, dropping in without a warning," he said, standing up to greet us.

The office was warm, decorated in tones of charcoal and deep wood. We took the two leather chairs facing his desk.

"Damian, meet Evelyn," Shae said, gesturing toward me.

I leaned forward, offering my hand. "Evelyn Reeve. It's a pleasure, Mr. Vale."

He shook my hand with a firm, fatherly grip. "Damian is fine. Please, sit."

He leaned back in his chair, his gaze shifting between Shae and me with professional curiosity.

"So, what brings the elusive Shae Marlowe to my office on a Tuesday?"

Shae adjusted her posture, her tone shifting into something more serious.

"Look, Damian. You mentioned last week that the executive team was looking for a new assistant—someone who can handle high-pressure environments. I wanted to personally recommend Evelyn for the role."

Damian turned his full attention to me. He folded his hands over the desk, his eyes searching mine with a look that was both assessing and kind.

"Where were you before this, Evelyn? And what was your focus?"

"I was a finance analyst at the Veridian Atrium in Manhattan," I answered, keeping my voice as stable as possible.

Damian raised an eyebrow, clearly recognizing the prestige of the Midtown skyscraper. He nodded slowly.

"New York, huh? That’s a shark tank. Why the move to Miami?"

"I needed a change of pace," I said, giving the rehearsed answer. "Personal reasons required me to relocate quickly, and I decided Miami was the right place for a fresh start."

He nodded again, accepting the explanation without prying. "Tell me about your daily responsibilities there."

I took a shallow breath and began to lay out my experience. I spoke about the data sets, the executive briefings, and the chaos I had managed. I focused on the facts, leaving the ghosts of Archer and Kensington Tech behind.

When I finished, Damian tapped his fingers on the desk in a rhythmic beat. He seemed to be weighing my words. Finally, he leaned forward.

"I think you’re exactly what we’re looking for, Evelyn. I’m going to put you forward for the position."

The weight on my chest suddenly felt a few pounds lighter. I glanced at Shae, and we shared a small, triumphant smile.

"Do you have your CV or a portfolio with you?" Damian asked.

I opened my mouth to answer, but Shae beat me to it with a playful, casual wave of her hand.

"Evelyn actually came down here on a whim to clear her head, Damian. She hasn't even had a chance to get her files organized yet." She gave him a mock-pleading look. "Can we send the paperwork over later this evening?"

Damian chuckled, shaking his head at Shae’s antics. He leaned back, waving it off.

"Fine, fine. The person matters more than the paper anyway, and I like what I see. Send it over when you can."

"Thank you, Damian. You're a lifesaver," Shae said.

I nodded, my face finally glowing with a bit of genuine relief. "Thank you, Mr. Vale. I’ll get everything over to you as soon as I get back."

Shae checked her watch. "Alright, Damian, we’ve got to run. I have a briefing in twenty minutes."

We all stood up.

"Thanks again, Damian. I really appreciate you taking the time," I said, offering a small, grateful tilt of my head.

"Of course, Evelyn. Get those files to my desk soon."

Shae and I stepped out of the office and into the corridor. The moment the door clicked shut, I let out a long, shaky exhale.

Shae laughed softly, nudging my shoulder. "See? I told you Damian was a breeze."

"I can't believe it was that easy," I whispered.

"You're overqualified, Evelyn. That's why," Shae said as we walked toward the elevators. "Listen, you okay taking an Uber back? I really have to haul ass back to the resort for this meeting."

"Yeah, of course. Go. I’ll be fine."

The elevator chimed, and the doors slid open at the lobby level. As we stepped out, the elevator adjacent to ours opened simultaneously.

A man stepped out.

Shae froze. Her eyes widened, and before I could even process who it was, she reached out and grabbed his arm.

"Jovan!" she blurted out.

I stopped dead in my tracks. My heart, which had just started to calm, lurched into my throat. I turned my head slowly, and my eyes locked onto Jovan Bradford.

He was standing there, looking like he’d just walked off a boardroom battlefield, and the shock on his face mirrored the sudden, sharp panic in my chest.

"Shae?" he asked, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What the hell are you doing here?"

POV: ArcherThe harsh Manhattan sun bled through the slats of my blinds, carving jagged lines across my mahogany desk. Even with the AC humming at a steady sixty-eight degrees, the air in my office felt stifling. Heavy. Like a storm was about to break.I leaned forward, digging my fingers into my scalp, tugging at hair that hadn't been trimmed in weeks.Since dawn, I’d been a ghost haunting her phone. I called until the ringing became a taunt. I sent texts that vanished into a digital void. She hadn’t even glanced at my Instagram stories. • The Boss Who Saved Me From My Stalker Ex   Chapter 17: Finding the Fragmented Self (Part 1)

POV: EvelynI didn't wake up to the jarring, mechanical hum of my Manhattan alarm clock. Instead, it was the Florida sun—unapologetic and gold—forcing its way through the gaps in the linen curtains. I stared at the ceiling for a few seconds, my mind a complete blank, before the weight of reality settled back into my bones.I wasn't in my apartment in Tribeca. I was miles away from the cold, marble corridors of Midtown. My body felt heavy, as if I’d spent the night running a marathon I hadn't signed up for. But for the first time in weeks, the air didn't taste like Archer’s lies or the metallic tang of betrayal. It was just quiet. A hollow, fragile kind of peace that gave me just enough room to breathe without choking.I scanned the room. Clean white walls, a minimalist oak bookshelf in the corner, and sheer cream drapes dancing in the humid Atlantic breeze. On the hardwood floor, a pair of light blue flip-flops had been placed neatly by the bed. Shae. It had to be her. I pulled the du
