"Mr. Alonzo, I'm here."
Her deep thought was interrupted by the person who had just come in. She looked at the door behind and saw an old woman with a red pixie cut hair and large eyeglasses.
The old lady's red and long skirt was bright in color, and her tucked-in white polo shirt was uncluttered. The old woman's tall stature was emphasized by her black heels, which were four inches high. Her pearl necklace and earrings were also striking.
One of the old woman's thin eyebrows rose at her sight and scornfully looked at her from head to toe. Lines drew on the old woman's forehead, and the veins in her neck protruded.
She gulped. The person was intimidating from head to toe. She had not done anything yet, but it seemed like she was already guilty of something because of how sharp the woman's stare was.
"You're scaring her, Kali," said Mr. Alonzo, who stopped the woman's deadly stare at her. "Lesley, please meet your supervisor, Mrs. Dapit."
"This is a joke, right?" the old woman, who was called Mrs. Dapit, asked in a hostile tone, then looked at her again with big and rounded eyes. "I asked for a healthy, strong, masculine man! Not a skinny teenager in a skirt!"
The angry woman walked towards the manager's desk and leaned so that her face was only inches away from Jacoben's.
"What is this? How can she defend herself when he gets out of control again, huh?! With her boobs? I asked for a soldier, and you gave me a girl? Are you out of your mind?!"
Lesley was stunned by what Mrs. Dapit said. Her two eyebrows rose.
W-w-whaat?! My boobs?!
Jacoben laughed. "You know what? That's a good idea. Maybe a beautiful girl's ample bosom is the answer to our problem. It might really calm him down."
Why are they talking about my boobs? What did that have to do with my job? She thought to herself.
"Besides, our precious boy is now a man," Jacoben added, causing the old woman's eyes to widen even more.
"I don't need your humor today, Jacoben! This is serious!"
"Hey, relax. Your wrinkles are coming out!" Jacoben jokingly said as he pointed to the lines on Mrs. Dapit's forehead.
But it did not shake off the sharp gaze of the angry woman. As a matter of fact, her face wrinkled even more.
Jacoben sighed. "Come on, it's so early for you to be stressed out during the day," he said before sitting down.
"I'm tired of dead bodies, Jacoben! Replace her! She will only last a day!" cried Mrs. Dapit, which slightly startled her.
It was as if some cold air suddenly enveloped her whole body. Did she hear that right? Her eyes were anxious as she stared at the old woman's face. What did Mrs. Dapit mean by those words?
"See? You're scaring her," Jacoben calmly said while pointing at her. "Please, orient her now and stop being paranoid. I know what I'm doing, Kali. Who do you think I am? Believe me. She's just the right person for the job."
She had no clue what the two were talking about, but she had a very bad feeling about it. She felt like backing out.
Mrs. Dapit sighed heavily. "I don't really know what's running through your mind, Jacoben. Fine! I'll do what you ask, but her blood is in your hands. It would be your fault if something were to happen to her!" The woman turned to her again. "Follow me."
Her feet felt like they got cemented to the ground. She could not lift her foot nor move. The two just talked about her dying. What was up with that?
She's tired of dead bodies? My blood is in his hands? What does she mean? As far as I know, I'm applying for a part-time janitress, but it sounded like this job will kill me! When did it become deadly to be a janitress? Or maybe I’m just overthinking? Perhaps they mean something else and are just teasing me because I am new here? Her mind kept thinking.
She was like a statue for a couple of seconds before raising her head and turning to Jacoben. She showed him her worried look and hesitation. She needed him to say it was not what she was thinking, and what they said was just a joke to make her nervous or tease her.
Jacoben noticed her frozen face. He saw the fear in the dark expression on her face, so he smiled at her. "Don't worry. I promise you'll come out of here in one piece and unscratched," he said to calm her worries down. "Mrs. Dapit is just joking. She doesn't like beautiful girls."
Mrs. Dapit just rolled her eyes at his joke. It calmed her a little, but the scary thought was still in her head. Surely, there is a reason why Mrs. Dapit said that and why the old woman reacted that way upon seeing her.
She has a very bad feeling about it. Something else is going on here. Her guts are telling her that there is something scary, creepy, and deadly in this hospital.
"So-sorry, I'm just a little nervous. This is my first job," she finally said after calming down.
"Don't we all? That's a normal feeling. Don't worry too much about it. I'm here if you need anything," Jacoben said in a very comforting tone. "Trust me. You'll be fine," he added.
Somehow, Jacoben's gentle smile is calming her.
"Can we go now? I still have a lot to do," Mrs. Dapit butted in.
Jacoben pointed at the door. "Go on. Mrs. Dapit will take care of you."
She nodded. She took a deep breath before following the grumpy woman outside Jacoben's office. The atmosphere was awkward as they walked. She just quietly tailed behind her until they came to a large room full of lockers.
Mrs. Dapit showed her where her locker would be and where she could get the cleaning supplies she would use. She was also given an employee handbook. It contained the rules and regulations of the hospital. She stared at it for a couple of seconds.
Maridona Nobles Asylum Handbook. It sure has a lot of pages for an employee handbook, she thought.
After Mrs. Dapit showed her where her office was, they finally took the elevator to the ward she will be assigned to and checked it.
Mrs. Dapit placed her ID on the small scanner beside the floor buttons. When the scanner turned green, the woman pressed the B1 button.
Just a few seconds later, the elevator opened. They immediately stepped out and continued walking until they came in front of a red-iron door.
"We're here," Mrs. Dapit said, then turned to her. "Don't get lost down here, Miss Madrigal. This is the only room you are allowed to enter here in Basement One. We have CCTV everywhere. Our security will drag you out if you wander elsewhere."
She nodded. "I understand."
"Good." Mrs. Dapit placed her ID again on the scanner on the wall next to the door.
While waiting for the scanner to light green, she suddenly felt scared standing in front of the crimson-colored door. There is something in this room that makes her heart beat faster.
Whatever is behind that door, she can sense it. She can not explain how and what is happening to her, but her whole being can feel the heavy presence of the person on the other side.
Her heart was pounding as she read the carving above the door.
"V-03..."
When you think of a mental hospital, you expect it to be a home to people with mental illness. People whose minds have given up because they can no longer cope with life's stresses or mental diseases that are already etched in their DNA have entirely taken over their brains. It makes you wonder what the limitation of one's brain is or how strong a person is to endure traumas, heartaches, and depression. So when Lesley entered the room with the red door, the first question that came to her mind was, what did this person go through to get into this situation? Because in front of her is the boy behind the red door, quietly sitting on the floor with his back against the white wall and in chains. She hovered her eyes over the entirety of the person called V-03. The person's feet and hands were chained. His almost r****h-like skin was so white and pale that it was nearly the same color as his white shirt. His long black hair covered his mysterious face, but she could see his eyes as blac
She became sullen because of what she heard. She will be the nanny of one of the most dangerous patients in this Asylum. Now she knows why Mrs. Dapit and Mr. Alonzo said those things earlier. This is too dangerous for a girl like her. What if the madman in front of them gets moody and then gets out of the chains? What if he hypnotizes her and makes her cross the yellow line? If it is true that he can do that, what will happen to her? "I'll give you until tomorrow to think about it," said Mrs. Dapit, pulling her from her reverie. "Again, I want you to think about this carefully." Mrs. Dapit opened the white folder she had been holding and handed her a document. "Here's your contract." She carefully took it from Mrs. Dapit's hand. "In case of your sudden or untimely death here, your family will be well compensated. We will also shoulder your funeral expenses. You can double-check it if you want. It's on page 5," Mrs. Dapit casually explained, like her death was just another busine
"I said I'm sorry! Please talk to me." Patrick begged, but Lesley pretended not to hear him. He was getting on her nerves with his non-stop apologies. After his prank, she started ignoring him as if he was invisible then he kept bugging her to forgive him. Thankfully their mother was not home yet. He almost kissed her. It had always been like this. She was not that naive nor dense to not notice his romantic feelings towards her. But they can not go down that path. Even though they are not blood-related, she is still an adopted child by his mother. They still grew up together. So she can only see him as her brother. Patrick followed her everywhere she went. He even went inside her room and laid beside her on her bed. He would not leave her alone until she forgave him. He was the type of person who would not stop until he got what he wanted. "Have you really gone crazy? Get out of my room!" she shouted. Lesley sat on her bed and glared at Patrick, lying comfortably beside her like he
She let out a heavy sigh. She placed her hands on Patrick's shoulder and looked straight into his eyes. "Okay, fine. I'm taking back everything I said, and I'm not mad at you anymore. I forgive you. Will you come out now?" She knew he would not go away with a simple beg. So she said what he wanted to hear. His face cleared. "Really? Do you mean it? Did that come from your heart? "You bet! I swear! Now, please leave. Mom's calling you." She became breathless when he suddenly hugged her tightly. She was so shocked she could not respond to what he was doing. "Don't think like that ever again. Okay? You're making me sad. I just want to get your attention. That's why I tease you every day. After you turned fourteen, you became distant from me. I don't like it," he softly said while she was still in his arms. She expected her hands to push him, but her bones seemed to have softened. Instead of scolding him, the first thing that came to her mind was how light it felt. Nobody in her
She took the deepest breath she could before opening the notorious red door to the room of the infamous patient, V-03. Her chest was drumming loudly in nervousness as the door opened. She suddenly recalled everything Mrs. Dapit told her earlier when she went to her office to make her employment at the hospital official. Mrs. Dapit said all the scary things possible that might happen to her in this place. The grumpy woman obviously was not excited to see her come back. She had to hear all those horrible things that happened to the previous caretakers. Mrs. Dapit had no doubt she would end up like them. Dead or missing a body part. Wow. What a way to cheer her up and boost her morale on her first day? But it was not just the strictness of her supervisor and the violent nature of the patient V-03 that worried her. Mrs. Dapit a
More than an hour had passed, but no one had raised their white flag yet. Her eyelids had gotten heavier. Half of her face, which had been resting on the table, was already red and a bit swollen. She slightly lifted her head to check on V-03. She frowned when she saw him. My Goodness! He's still looking at me, unmoved, like a dummy. Doesn't he get tired? Unbelievable! He looks like he has no intention of eating his food unless she feeds him. She looks at her wristwatch. She is running out of time. It seems like she lost this battle. She now has no choice but to do as he says, or she will not be able to go home. She raised her head and sat upright. She took a few deep breaths before standing up and slowly walking towards V-03. She left a distance of three steps between them. Then she looked at him lazily. "All right, you won. I'm going to feed you. I'll do what you want, V-03, but I'm begging you, please, don't hurt me." She took one step closer. "I'll be nice to you, promise.
Kali just received a call from the front desk that a janitress asked to see her in her office. She sneered when she heard who it was. "I am busy right now, but let her in. I'm sure she wants to see me to hand in her resignation. I can make time for that." "Okay, Ma'am. I will tell her to come in." "Thank you." She put down the phone and put away the laptop on her desk. Then she heard three faint knocks on the door. "Come in." Slowly the door opened, and Lesley's head peeked. "Good evening," the young lady greeted before entering her office. Kali smiled widely. She could no longer wait to sign Lesley's resignation papers. "So, how may I help you, Miss Madrigal?" "Y-yes." Lesley swallowed before continuing. "Uhm, I just wanted to say tha—" "Wait!" she interrupted while she raised her right hand. "Let me guess. You want to leave, right?" She did not wait for Lesley to answer and assumed that the girl was giving up her job. She stood up and took a couple of documents from th
She has a broad smile as she walks and greets everyone she passes by. She is now officially an employee in MNA. She can not wait to be friends with people in this hospital. And even more, she can not wait to go to V-03 right now. While riding the elevator down to Basement 1, she caught up with two female nurses who stood in front of her. The nurse on the right pressed the B1 button, the same floor she was going to. "Excuse me," she said, gaining their attention. "Can I ask a question?" The two turned around to face her and smiled. They looked friendly enough. Since they seemed to be working on the same floor as her, where the special patients are held, they might be able to answer some of her questions. "Sure, what is it?" the woman at the right kindly replies. "Uhm, where do I go if I need to ask about B1 patients? I just want to know the name of the one assigned to me and how old he is." She smiled shyly. "I'm sorry, I'm just new here, so I don't know." "Oh, girl. That is top s
