The first box went into Noah’s apartment on Saturday morning.

Maya stood in the middle of her nearly empty living room and stared at the bare walls. The mattress was still there—stripped and leaning against the wall for the donation pickup—but almost everything else had already been carried across the grass. Noah had recruited one of the trainers from the gym to help with the heavier pieces. The two of them moved with efficient, minimal conversation while Maya packed the last of the kitchen things and tried not to feel the strange finality of it.

Sofia showed up mid-morning with coffee and an exaggerated look of appraisal.

“You’re really doing it,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “Giving up the emergency exit.”

Maya taped a box shut and shot her sister a look. “It’s not an emergency exit. It’s an apartment I barely used.”

“Uh-huh.” Sofia sipped her coffee, eyes sparkling. “Dad said Noah looked like he was trying not to smile too hard the whole time you were at the house. Mom’s already asking when you’re bringing him for Sunday dinner as an official boyfriend instead of the neighbor kid.”

Heat climbed Maya’s neck. “We’re taking it one step at a time.”

“You’re moving in with him. That’s a pretty big step.”

Maya didn’t argue. She just stacked the last box and straightened. Across the grass she could see Noah carrying her desk chair up the stairs to his place like it weighed nothing. The sight of him—familiar, solid, already making space for her things—pulled a quiet warmth through her chest.

Sofia followed her gaze and softened. “He’s good for you. You’ve been lighter since you stopped fighting it.”

“I know.” Maya exhaled. “I’m still getting used to not waiting for the catch.”

“Maybe there isn’t one this time.” Sofia bumped her shoulder. “Crazy concept, I know.”

By early afternoon the last of Maya’s things had crossed the narrow strip of grass. She stood in Noah’s living room—now their living room—and looked at the organized chaos of boxes. Her books were already half-unpacked onto his shelves. Her coffee maker sat beside his on the kitchen counter. Her clothes hung in the closet next to his hoodies and T-shirts.

Noah came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“Overwhelmed?” he asked quietly.

“A little.” She leaned back into him. “In a good way. Mostly.”

“We don’t have to finish everything today. There’s no deadline.”

“I know. I just… want it to feel like mine too. Not like I’m a guest in your space.”

Noah turned her gently to face him. His expression was serious and soft at the same time. “It’s already yours. The second you said you were staying, it stopped being just my place. We can rearrange whatever you want. Paint a wall. Buy a bigger couch. I don’t care. I just want you here.”

The simple certainty in his voice still had the power to make her throat tight. Maya stretched up and kissed him, slow and lingering. Noah made a low sound and pulled her closer, hands sliding under the hem of her shirt to rest against the bare skin of her lower back.

They didn’t make it back to unpacking for a while.

Later, after a late lunch of leftovers and another round of unpacking, Maya found herself standing in the bedroom doorway watching Noah hang the last of her clothes. He worked with quiet focus, making space without comment, shifting his own things to the left side of the closet like it was the most natural adjustment in the world.

“You’re very calm about all of this,” she said.

He glanced over his shoulder. “I’ve had years to imagine you in this space. The reality is better.”

She walked over and slipped her arms around him from behind, pressing her cheek to the warm plane of his back. “I’m still scared sometimes. Not of you. Of how much I already need this. Of how quiet the nights were without you.”

Noah turned in her arms and cupped her face. “I know. I felt the same way every time you locked that door. Like I was losing something I’d wanted too long to lose. But we’re past that now. You’re here. I’m here. We get to build the rest on purpose.”

Maya nodded, then stretched up and kissed him again. This time the kiss deepened quickly. Noah walked her backward until the backs of her knees hit the bed, then followed her down. They undressed each other with unhurried hands. When he pushed into her it was slow and deep, eyes locked on hers, one hand laced tightly with hers against the pillow.

“Welcome home,” he murmured against her mouth as he moved.

The words pulled a soft, broken sound from her throat. Maya wrapped herself around him and held on, letting the pleasure build in long, rolling waves until she came with his name on her lips. Noah followed soon after, face buried in her neck, the quiet groan of her name vibrating against her skin.

Afterward they lay tangled in the sheets of what was now their bed, the late-afternoon light slanting across the boxes still waiting in the living room. Noah traced idle patterns along her spine. Maya listened to his heartbeat and felt the last residual strangeness of the move settle into something quieter and more solid.

“Sunday dinner at my parents’ next week,” she said into the quiet. “Officially. As a couple. You ready for that?”

Noah’s chest shook with a silent laugh. “I’ve been ready. Your dad already gave me the shoulder clap of reluctant approval. I think I’m in.”

Maya smiled against his skin. “Sofia’s going to be insufferable.”

“I can handle Sofia.”

“She’s going to ask when you’re proposing.”

Noah was quiet for a beat. Then he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Tell her she’ll be the second to know.”

Maya lifted her head to look at him, heart suddenly beating harder. Noah’s expression was soft and completely serious.

“Not today,” he added. “Not this month. But I’m not pretending this is temporary, Maya. I’ve wanted forever with you since before I knew what to call it. We can take the time we need. I’m not going anywhere.”

The honesty of it settled deep under her ribs. Maya kissed him—slow and sure and full of everything she still sometimes struggled to say out loud.

“Neither am I,” she whispered.

They stayed in bed until the light faded. Eventually Noah ordered pizza and they ate it on the couch surrounded by half-unpacked boxes, her legs draped over his lap, his hand resting on her shin like it belonged there. The television played something neither of them watched. The ordinary domesticity of it felt more intimate than some of the nights they had spent naked and desperate for each other.

When they finally went to bed for the night, Maya fell asleep with Noah’s arm locked around her waist and the quiet certainty that the apartment across the grass no longer held any claim on her.

This was home now.

Not because she had nowhere else to go.

Because she had finally chosen to stay.

  • The Boy Next Door    Epilogue

**One Year Later**The rain had started again, soft and steady against the windows, the same way it had the night Noah showed up soaked and refused to let the silence win.Maya stood at the sliding door of the apartment that had been theirs for a full year now, coffee mug warm between her hands, and watched the water bead and run down the glass. Across the narrow strip of grass, the unit that used to be hers still sat quiet in the early morning light. Someone else lived there now—a young couple with a small dog that barked at squirrels. She never looked at it with longing. She only looked at it the way people look at an old photograph: proof of a version of herself she had outgrown.Behind her, the bedroom door opened.Noah’s footsteps were familiar even before his arms slid around her waist. He rested his chin on her shoulder, still warm from sleep, and pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“You’re up early,” he murmured.“Couldn’t sleep.” She leaned back into him. “Anniversar

**Six months laterMaya woke to the smell of coffee and the low sound of rain against the windows. For a moment she stayed still, eyes closed, cataloguing the familiar details the way she sometimes still did—Noah’s heavier breathing behind her, the warm weight of his arm across her waist, the faint scent of his skin and the laundry detergent they both used now. The bed was theirs. The apartment was theirs. The quiet Sunday morning stretching ahead of them was theirs too.She smiled into the pillow.Behind her, Noah stirred. His arm tightened, pulling her more firmly against his chest. He pressed a slow, sleepy kiss to the back of her shoulder, then another higher up, near the side of her neck.“You’re awake,” he murmured, voice rough with sleep.“So are you.”“Your breathing changed.” He kissed the same spot again, lingering. “It always does.”Maya turned in his arms so she could see him. Noah’s hair was a mess. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. His eyes were sof

****The drive to Maya’s parents’ house the next morning felt longer than the actual twenty minutes it took.Noah drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on her thigh, thumb tracing slow, absent circles through the fabric of her jeans. Maya watched the familiar streets pass and tried to organize what she wanted to say. Her parents already knew the broad strokes from Sofia’s call and the police report. What they didn’t know was how deeply Noah was woven into the story now—or how permanent she intended that to be.Noah glanced over. “You nervous?”“A little.” She covered his hand with hers. “They always liked you. I’m more nervous about admitting how long I tried to keep this casual when it never was.”His mouth curved. “I’ll try not to look too smug about being right.”“Appreciated.”The house looked the same as it always had—neat lawn, the old oak tree that still held the remnants of a tire swing, her mother’s flower beds along the front walk. Maya’s father opened the d

****The restraining order paperwork sat on Noah’s kitchen table like a quiet threat of its own.Maya stared at the printed forms while Noah finished a call with the lawyer his security-contact friend had recommended. The woman on the other end had been brisk and practical: document everything, file promptly, request a temporary order first, prepare for the possibility that Daniel might contest it. None of it was complicated. All of it felt heavy.Noah ended the call and set his phone down. “She can meet us tomorrow morning at the courthouse. Temporary order can usually be issued the same day if the judge agrees the pattern of contact is clear.”Maya nodded. Her coffee had gone cold an hour ago. “Okay.”He pulled out the chair beside her and sat. His knee bumped hers under the table and stayed there. “You don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be with you the whole time.”“I know.” She reached for his hand without looking. His fingers closed around hers immediately. “I just hate that it go

****Maya woke before Noah the next morning.Sunlight filtered through the half-open curtains of his bedroom, painting a soft stripe across the sheets and the bare curve of his shoulder. He slept on his stomach, face turned toward her, one arm stretched out like he had reached for her in the night and simply left it there. The sight of him—unarmed, unguarded, completely at ease in sleep—made something tight and tender pull under her ribs. She lay still for a long time and watched him breathe. The events of the previous night sat in her chest like a stone that had finally started to dissolve. Daniel at the door. Noah stepping into the hallway without hesitation. The raw, protective edge in his voice when he told her ex that it was over. The way he had held her afterward, steady and certain, while the leftover adrenaline drained out of both of them. She had spent years building walls designed to keep exactly this kind of feeling out. And somehow the boy next door had walked through ever
