Chapter 2

Author: Nanna
Once upon a time, Naomi and I were recognized across Avenport as the twin prodigies of the elite.

She was vibrant and outspoken, while I was gentle and modest.

We were supposed to be the perfect match.

When we were young, our mothers were best friends, so Mom would constantly take me over to the Dudley residence to play.

Back then, Naomi's father, Jared Dudley, rarely came home, and Bella would take out all her frustration on a young Naomi.

When I was seven, I followed Mom to the Dudley residence and wandered into their backyard.

There, I found Naomi kneeling by the edge of the pool, soaking wet and looking exactly like an abandoned kitten.

Feeling a pang of sympathy, I pulled her to her feet and hid her in my home.

Mom used to tease me about it, laughing that I had learned how to hide a pretty girl away at such a young age.

From that moment on, protecting Naomi became my mission.

After that, she became my shadow, completely inseparable from me.

Our parents' marriages were both business arrangements, but Bella had been in love with Jared for years. She couldn't handle his infidelity.

When Jared brought home yet another woman, Bella snapped, and a violent fight broke out as she attacked the mistress.

The three-way clash was incredibly chaotic, and Naomi got caught in the crossfire.

By the time I rushed over, shattered porcelain shards were flying straight toward her.

Without a second thought, I pulled Naomi into my arms, letting the flying shards bury themselves into my back.

Naomi was a crybaby back then. That day, her tears fell on me like a faucet that couldn't be turned off.

Despite the agonizing pain, I forced a grin and held her face, looking her straight in the eyes. "It doesn't hurt, Naomi."

She threw her arms around me tightly, and her voice trembled through her sobs. "Kenneth, don't be so stupid ever again."

Once I drifted off to sleep, Naomi went home, brought out her grandmother, and smashed a roomful of things, threatening to kill herself if they didn't stop.

Only then did Bella and Jared quiet down for a bit.

Later, I had to undergo several surgeries to completely clean the porcelain shards from my back. Naomi took care of me the entire time.

In my half-awake moments, I would see her curled up in a tiny ball on the chair. Looking at her, I felt a deep ache in my chest and an overwhelming urge to protect her for the rest of my life.

Years later, we officially started dating in college. But because of an accident, we accidentally figured out the existence of the will of the world.

Through various tests, we proved that Naomi was the female lead and that I was probably not the male lead.

My consciousness awakened. I was just the devoted second male lead, existing purely to serve as a foil for the main couple's love story.

When I refused to accept this and tried everything to stay close to Naomi, and when Naomi's world was entirely consumed by me, the world gave us a warning.

It used every method possible to try and erase me, attempting to force the plot back on track.

At my coming-of-age birthday party, the venue's heavy ceiling fixture broke free and plummeted toward me.

It was Naomi who recklessly shoved me out of the way. The sharp diamond chandelier shattered, slicing open her eyebrow.

My ears roared, rendering me deaf to everything. I could only instinctively clutch Naomi's hand.

She comforted me over and over. "Kenneth, I'm here. Kenneth, it's okay. Kenneth, look at me. Look at me."

From that point on, Naomi became obsessive, like a maniac who would do absolutely anything to love me.

Yet the male lead destined for Naomi still appeared in her life right on schedule.

I couldn't stop it.

During Naomi's graduate studies, a guy named Bryson joined her research group.

The first time I saw him, I knew he was the male lead.

Perhaps out of pure jealousy, I hated him for no reason at all.

But he was too gentle. So gentle that I could never find a valid reason to pick a fight with him or demand he leave Naomi alone.

Naomi began to spend a lot of time with him, but they kept a proper distance between them.

Besides a rising panic in my chest, I was entirely powerless.

One day, while Naomi and I were spending time together, she casually brought up Bryson again. A warm, gentle smile lit up her eyes.

The panic in my heart surged like a tsunami, drowning me and making me lose control.

Naomi froze, her arms gradually falling limply to her sides. "I'm sorry, Kenneth. I didn't keep my word."I didn't want to hear her apologies. I said flatly, "Let's not bring up the past, Naomi. You know I only have three days. I don't want to waste them on you. I chased after you for far too long. I don't love you anymore, Naomi, so let's just drop it."Her eyes welled with tears, and her lips trembled as she struggled to speak. She tilted her head back, and her shoulders shook with a laugh. For a long time, she didn't say whether she agreed or not.Her eyes curved, and the tears she was holding back finally spilled over.I casually grabbed a tissue from the table and handed it to her."Maybe teenage love isn't meant to last forever. Back then, whoever caught our eye was the one we'd recklessly ruin ourselves for."I flashed a helpless smile, showing my canine tooth. "But Naomi, we aren't teenagers anymore. That's our past. Let's just leave it there."She stared at me intently

Naomi uncovered the next photo. It was a candid shot I had taken of her.Back then, I had been hospitalized for days due to a severe allergic reaction. Both of my parents were tied up with work, so Naomi was the only one by my side. She was dozing off in the armchair when I snapped the picture. In the photo, she had one eye cracked open, playfully sticking her tongue out at me.There was no inscription on the back of that one.The stack of photos was incredibly thick, spanning from our kindergarten days all the way to the brink of our fallout.Naomi's hands trembled as she flipped through them, one by one.Buried beneath the photos were the matching rings we had made—the very ones she had smashed when she chose Bryson. They were flecked with rust now, but the poorly engraved initials of our names were still visible on the bands.Beneath that was a journal. From the moment we started dating, Naomi had insisted I keep a log of our relationship.I had intended to give it to her a

Back in the car, Bryson attentively began massaging Naomi's temples, but she closed her eyes and dodged his hand.Naomi didn't get the answers she wanted. Bryson didn't ask her anything either. He simply murmured, "Naomi, let's head back as soon as possible, okay?""Okay," Naomi agreed. That evening, after dinner, Naomi sat alone in the living room while Bryson attended an online seminar. As she worked on her laptop, she suddenly noticed that Bella's favorite vase was missing from the living room. Her head felt like it was about to split open again. The harder she tried to force herself to remember, the more agonizing the pain became.I crouched right in front of her, peeking at the project quotes on her laptop screen. I recalled how I had secretly visited Mom in a dream the other night, plotting to make Naomi and Bryson lose every cent they had.The pain in Naomi's head must have been too much to bear. She tried to stand up to go rest, but she stumbled unsteadily. The butler,

Naomi lowered her gaze, remaining silent as she refused to take the box."Mrs. Briggs," she asked softly, "did I forget something incredibly important?"Mom let out a cold laugh. "You didn't forget. My son just had terrible luck. Take the box and get the hell out."Naomi left the house, cradling the box in her arms. The box I left for her was the last thing I was going to do."Naomi, you made me drown in jealousy and heartbreak for so long. So now, I'm going to let you taste the exact same despair I felt back then. This is your very last chance to remember me."This was her very last chance to remember me.Sitting in her car, Naomi hesitated several times to open the box, but she ultimately left it unopened on the seat. She turned around and went back to the Dudley residence. Late into the night, a single light still burned on the third floor.Bryson was waiting up for her.She walked into the bedroom to find him flipping through a book.Seeing her enter, Bryson set the book

I desperately clutched Naomi's hand, reciting the vows we had once made to each other. But she brushed my hand away and said flatly, "You disgust me."Right after that, she and Bryson went public with a high-profile announcement. On Naomi's birthday, she took her research group out for dinner. I rushed to the venue.Standing just outside the door, I listened to them laughing and joking inside.Someone asked her, "Naomi, Kenneth is so obsessive and controlling. You two used to be so close, but with a temper as bad as his, how did you even put up with him all these—"Someone else coughed, cutting her off.The speaker let out an awkward laugh and tried to smooth it over. "Oh, my bad. I shouldn't bring that up."Naomi didn't seem to care. Leaning back against the couch in a completely relaxed posture, she replied, "I forgot. Honestly, I can't even remember why I ever liked someone like Kenneth. The kind of guy I actually like is…"She frowned, leaving the sentence unfinished. Then

"Enough! Stop talking about him, alright? Naomi, don't you realize he's already taking over your mind?" I barked, looking at her with sheer helplessness.Naomi froze. A flicker of panic crossed her eyes, slowly giving way to a dazed look. But her tightly pressed lips told me that she, too, realized that Bryson was slowly seeping into her mind, like a gentle spring rain.Suddenly, Naomi dug her nails hard into her own arm, leaving bloody scratches behind. As beads of blood welled up, the confusion in her eyes hardened into resolve."That won't happen again, Kenneth," she said. "This is the last time."With bloodshot eyes, I painfully reached out to cover her wounds, but Naomi threw her arms around me and promised, "I won't mention him again, Kenneth. I won't. I'll keep my distance from him from now on."The desperate madness in her devotion made me believe neither of us would ever let go of the other. After that day, I never heard Bryson's name from Naomi again. But fate was a
