𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝘼

Getting out of the elevator as I search for my phone to call Marisol, I never envisioned Dante standing right infornt of our apartment door like some immovable wall, a possibility. But that's exactly what I'm faced with right now, or not. My eyes could be playing tricks on me. I blink just to be sure.

My heart squeezes as my steps falter. What is he doing here? Did he even get permission to come up? Or did he just like always force his way through?

I take a step toward him. My lips parting, ready to demand some answers.

But he doesn’t stop moving. He walks right past me, his shoulders brushing close enough that I feel the heat off his body, and just keeps going. No glance, or word. Just nothing.

My stomach knots and confusion grips me, choking me harder than his silence.

What the hell was he doing here?

***

Marisol is the one who opens the door for me when I finally push myself inside. She looks bright, almost giddy, her voice pitching higher than usual.

𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝘼 “Alera.” I stop at the sound of my name. I turn to find Dante standing at the end of the hall. He's braced against the wall. For a second, I think he might fall over. “I'll like to talk to you.” My arm rubs at the other. “I’m exhausted. I was just about to sleep.” “It won’t take long.” His tone isn’t sharp. If anything, it’s gentler than I’ve heard in weeks, and it makes me uneasy. “I should shower first,” I mutter after a brief round of thinking of the best possible way to avoid this and not coming to with any. He nods. “Alright. Just meet me in my office when you are done.” I slip into my bathroom and crank the shower on high until steam fills the space. The water scalds my skin, but I don’t turn it down. My mind races as I scrub myself clean. What does he want? Is it is health? Or the diagnosis? Did the MRI show something terrible? What if it is a tumor? What if it’s terminal? The thought makes me feel all queasy, but I shove it down and finish qui

𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝘼 Tumor? He could have a tumor? My heart pounds in my ears as I watch the doctor and Francesca lead him out of his room. I follow right behind. “I want to go with you,” I blurt. Dante’s gaze cuts to me, his eyes are hard and sharp even through his face is pulled down by weariness. His hand braces against the chair, as his body trembles from the effort of standing. Francesca and the doctor hover at his sides, but it’s me he looks at. “You’re not coming.” I flinch at the bluntness. “I just thought… I should be there. So I can know what—” “I don’t need you,” he interrupts. His tone is so hostile, I wonder what I did to him to get him so upset. For a heartbeat, I remain still, calm on the outside but crumbling inside. I swallow hard, and force my voice to stay even. “Alright.” I step back. The doctor takes his arm, Francesca steadies his other side. He leans into them, and I let him pass. The door shuts behind them, and my ribs burn like I’ve been branded. "I don’t

𝘿𝘼𝙉𝙏𝙀 “What are you doing here?” Alera’s hand freezes against my forehead and her eyes widen like I just caught her stealing. “I—uh…” She clears her throat. “You weren’t—well, you were burning up, and… you didn’t wake when I called you. I thought—” She stops, bites her lip, and shakes her head. “I thought something was wrong...” She’s flustered, her words tumble out without order. Normally I’d enjoy seeing her like this, off balance. But my head feels like it’s splitting in two, and embarrassment spikes through me instead. I must look pathetic. And she saw all of it. My throat is dry. “You should’ve left.” Her shoulders stiffen. “Well, when I see a delirious man in his living room, I’ll remember to leave him there next time.” Weakly, I manage to give her a glare. On the other hand, her gaze flickers over me, wary and searching, and it makes me feel a little odd. So, I break our gaze. “How do you feel?” she asks carefully. “Like shit,” I answer bluntly, dragging a hand ov

𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝘼 I move forward slowly towards Dante. He doesn’t stir. His head is tilted back against the sofa, with his eyes half lidded, and the glass in his hand tips dangerously. Something is wrong. A chill shoots through me and the first thought that claws into my brain is his mother. Mrs. Elena. Had something happened? Was this why he looked like a hollowed shell, sitting here in silence? I swallow hard and reach for the glass. My fingers curl around it carefully, steadying it before it spills. It’s only water. Relief doesn’t come. If anything, my fear sharpens. I set the glass aside and lean closer. “Dante,” I whisper. No response. My hand trembles as I reach for his face. I tap his cheek gently. His skin is warm under my fingers. And then, suddenly, his eyes snap into focus. They fix on me with startling clarity, as if I’d just torn him from a dream. Before I can react, his hand clamps onto my wrist and pulls. I let out a sharp yelp as my body is dragged forward, landing a

𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝘼 “I think I’ll pass...” I start, but Mauve’s hand brushes mine. “Actually, Alera,” she says gently, “I think you should join. It'll be perfect for you to get acquainted with what we do here.” I look at her a bit, startled. Of all people, I expected her to give me an out, not pull me in. Davina’s gaze coolly slides toward her. For a moment, she looks like she doesn’t even register Mauve’s presence. Then, slowly, a smile unfurls. “Oh. Mrs. Harrington.” Her tone is syrupy. “How good to see you. I didn’t think you’d bother attending these gatherings.” Mauve chuckles, unbothered. “Ah, yes. My mom basically gave me a free pass. So here I am. Can’t really avoid it.” Davina tilts her head, as if the laughter doesn’t quite land with her. “Well then. You know what? I think you should join us too. I can see how comfortable Alera is with you. Join our committee.” Mauve flashes me a grin. Without saying a word, we both know , we’ll stick this out together. Davina leads us into a

𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝘼 Mauve gives me a small, sheepish smile. “I’ll be back,” she says, and turns to leave. I remain immobilized for a moment, as my mind gnaws at the Harrison surname. It can’t be him. There are hundreds of Harrisons in Manhattan alone. Still, the thought lingers. My lungs lock up slightly as I flash back to that gala, the first one with Dante. Julian had been there, and he'd seen me. But due to my nervousness, I bolted off. If I had just acted calmly and let a conversation happen, I probably would have known he was married. I shake my head and close my eyes. It shouldn’t matter whether Julian is married. We ended things years ago. But that thought, that possibility, is like a small weight pressing against the edges of my calm. I take a slow breath. I need clarity. I’ll ask Mauve about her husband. I need to know if I can let this go or if it’s something I’ll have to navigate carefully. Mauve returns. And just as I open my mouth to ask the questions, the chatter dims as
