Chapter 2

Author: Trust
Matthew had abandoned me, causing me to become the laughingstock of the crowd. He even established his dominance by stepping up to protect Kylie and mating with her. Why didn't he consider how humiliating his actions would be for me?

I reached out to shut the door. "I'll say it one last time—I won't be your lover."

My attitude clearly pissed Matthew off. As he spoke, his voice was tinged with fury. "Don't push your luck, Queenie. You're such a desperate woman. Without me, who else would even want you?"

With that, Matthew kicked the door before turning to leave.

I clutched my chest, dropping the act. I crouched down and sobbed quietly.

The man, who always protected and doted on me, was gone. He had reserved all his love for Kylie.

From the moment he left me behind at the mating ceremony, I should have seen his true colors. But we had been together for ten years. I refused to accept the truth that Matthew had fallen for another woman.

In the end, the sliver of hope I had held onto hit me like a slap in the face.

Edwin had kept his word. The next day, 20 bodyguards stood outside my door, waiting for my orders to move my belongings.

Mom and Dad tried to talk me out of it, saying that Edwin's violence made him a poor match.

Still, I did not back out. Love was nothing compared to loyalty.

Edwin's pack, the Moonbeam pack, valued loyalty above all. Edwin believed in living a life of solitude if one were to lose their mate, and there was no room for betrayal. That was why others began spreading rumors of his violent temper.

Edwin was a responsible and handsome Alpha. If it weren't for Alpha Leonard's orders, Kylie never would have even gotten the chance to marry Edwin.

Just as I gave orders to the bodyguards to move my belongings, I spotted Kylie and Matthew walking arm in arm. They had clearly misunderstood, thinking that I was preparing to move to their place.

Matthew smirked. "Queenie, since you've finally come around, I'll let you have the basement at my manor."

I subconsciously frowned.

When I remained quiet, they assumed they got it right.

Kylie gave Matthew a playful nudge. "Since Queenie's ready to be part of our family, you should quickly give her your welcome gift, Matt."

With that reminder, Matthew took a red box from his bag and tossed it toward me. He must have thought he was being generous, as if he had just given me some precious treasure.

"That's yours."

I did not catch the box and let it fall to the ground. A chipped moonstone, looking as if it had been picked off a street, fell out. It was a stark contrast to the high-quality moonstone necklace around Kylie's neck.

"You should keep that for Kylie. I'm not worthy of such fine things."

Matthew's expression darkened instantly, and he kicked the moonstone toward the trash can. "Since you don't want it, let's get rid of it."

Kylie pouted. "It was just a little something from us. Queenie, did you refuse it because you're holding a grudge against me?"

"What grudge? Once she's living with us, she'll have to follow our rules."

Matthew snapped his fingers, prompting a maid to immediately hand me a list.

The paper was filled with a long list of rules. One of the listed rules was "Every day, Mrs. Graham must have peeled fresh grapes at 8:00 am and fresh prawns at noon…"

I laughed in exasperation. Were those really rules? That was simply a list of chores for the maids.

I lifted my gaze and met Kylie's radiant smile. I finally understood what she was up to—she wanted to show off her status as the wife of the Sunpeak pack's successor.

But I couldn't care less. I looked at Matthew and asked with a smile, "Are you done? If so, get out of my bodyguards' way."

I paused before tossing the list toward Matthew and Kylie. "I'm not moving into your house. You can keep that list for the next person who joins your family!"

When I was a kid, Mom and Dad wanted me to blend in with the humans and study abroad. However, someone would always rank above me in my exams, making me feel like a terrible student. I even cried for several nights over it.Now, I knew that person was Edwin."Oh, right. Alpha, I remember you pretended to be the princess' pen pal and wrote letters to her for the past ten years. Do you still have those letters?"I subconsciously drew closer to the wall, wanting to hear better.Edwin chuckled, saying, "Yes. I kept them in my safe.""It looks like Matthew did you a favor by snatching Kylie away. That's how you got the chance to form a mate bond with the princess.""If the Sunpeak pack hadn't used their moonstone resources to pressure our Alpha, no one could ever have a say in who his mate should be.""If they had chosen to send the princess to become our Alpha's mate, he would've treated her better than anyone else ever could. No one would be able to steal her away!"Matthew's li

I was at the end of my wits, so I ordered the bodyguards to drag Kylie from the middle of the road to the side."Kylie, you know very well that Matthew and I ended things long ago. I've already blocked him from contacting me and deleted his number. Whatever that's happening between you two is none of my business.""Impossible. If you two aren't in contact, why does Matt look at your photos every day and ignore me? Queenie, I'm begging you. Please give Matt back to me!"More people had gathered around to see what the fuss was all about. As I turned to return to the car, Kylie instinctively moved to continue blocking the vehicle. However, Matthew appeared just then, grabbing her hand and slapping her. "Kylie, haven't you caused enough trouble? Do you want everyone to know about our scandal?"Kylie covered her face, looking rather wronged. "Matt…""That's enough. Let's hurry home. Stop embarrassing me in public." Matthew dragged Kylie into the car. He wanted to greet me, but I had a

"What's so different? It's just a typical man's pride. Matthew realized that our princess was slipping out of his grasp and felt threatened."I was in a daze. I didn't even realize that Edwin had walked through the door with a plate of moonberry cake."You're awake. Are you hungry?"Having just woken up, I was feeling slightly groggy. I merely nodded at his question dazedly. "Yeah."Edwin scooped up a spoonful of cake and brought it to my lips. "We've added herbs to this cake. They'll help with your recovery."I hesitantly took a bite and found the cake to be far more bitter than anything I had ever tasted."Don't try to get out of eating this, Queenie. If you don't finish the entire cake, the chef will add these herbs to other dishes."Edwin was clearly threatening me. It seemed like the rumors were true—he truly was heartless! He wanted to make sure I actually finished my medicine. Aside from getting some work done, he practically stayed by my side all day."Your work really

As I sneered at Matthew, he became slightly flustered and grew more irritated than ever. It was as if a fire had ignited within him, making it hard for him to breathe.Matthew pointed at Edwin. "Queenie, even if you're trying to piss me off, there's no need to form a mate bond with this dude! Have you forgotten what the rumors say about him? Be careful—he might kill you!"Edwin raised an eyebrow, his smile not reaching his eyes.Looking at my parents' darkened expressions, I knew I had to put an end to this. "Matthew, I know what I'm doing. You don't have to concern yourself with my family matters."Edwin chuckled and nodded in satisfaction. "I think you should leave."Seeing that we were almost done talking, Dad waved for the bodyguards to approach at once. Before the bodyguards could escort Matthew and Kylie out of the hall, Matthew turned toward me. "Queenie, come with me!"However, Edwin blocked his attempt to grab me. "Matthew, she's my mate."Matthew's eyes turned red. He

On the tablet screen was a draft of a fireworks design, and the pattern was designed around my name."Do you like it? I'll set them off for you in a few days.""Yes." I nodded, sending a copy of the design file to my phone. Then I groggily fell asleep. The car rolled to a stop at the entrance to the Shadowstar pack. While this banquet was considered a family dinner, it was actually an occasion for my mate to officially meet my parents.I was a little anxious. Even my palms were starting to sweat.Edwin patted the back of my hand to comfort me. Just as he was about to lead me inside, his men appeared and began whispering to him."Go ahead. I can handle it on my own," I said.Edwin's golden eyes darkened. "Give me ten minutes. Please wait for me."So, I waited in the hall, chatting with the adults. Soon, one of the pack members came to inform me that my mate had arrived. But the one who showed up wasn't Edwin—it was Matthew.I scowled when I saw Matthew approach, holding Kylie

Matthew and Kylie didn't seem to have heard me.Tears blurred Kylie's vision as she stepped forward to grab my hand. She wanted to take off the necklace around her neck and give it to me."Queenie, you're mad that I took Matt's affection from you, right? You can have this necklace!"I scowled as I tried to break free of her grasp. "Let me go."Kylie fell backward. Then, she held up the shattered necklace, looking rather aggrieved. "I'm sorry, Queenie. I only wanted to give this to you."Matthew tugged at his tie before shoving me aside. He lifted Kylie in his arms, looking rather upset."Queenie, it took Kylie one whole month to get this necklace custom-made! Never mind if you don't appreciate it—Kylie wanted to give it to you, yet you shattered it just like that. A petty and jealous woman like you doesn't deserve to be my lover."With that, Matthew turned to leave. As he walked away, Kylie raised her head from the crook of Matthew's neck and licked her lips, as if trying to ch
