Chapter 18: The World Sees

The first clip hit the internet at 9:42 a.m.

By 10:15 a.m. it was everywhere.

I lay in the hospital bed with the television muted, watching the same twenty-second fragment play on loop across three different news channels. Grainy motel-room footage. My younger face turned toward the camera. Victor Langley’s hand on my waist. The caption beneath every broadcast was some variation of the same cruelty:

Billionaire’s Bride Caught in Secret Sex-and-Drug Tape

Voss Wife’s Hidden Past Exposed

The Bribe Was Only the Beginning

Damien stood at the foot of the bed, phone pressed to his ear, barking orders at lawyers, PR teams, and cybersecurity specialists in a voice so cold it barely sounded human. Every few minutes he would glance at me, as if making sure I hadn’t disappeared again.

I couldn’t stop staring at the screen.

That girl in the video looked like a stranger. Thin. Exhausted. Desperate enough to do whatever it took to keep her sister out of prison and her mother alive. I remembered the fear. I remembered the shame. I remembered promising myself that if I just got through that one night, I would never feel that powerless again.

And yet here I was—powerless in a completely new way.

My phone (the new one Damien had given me) buzzed nonstop with unknown numbers. I finally silenced it after the fifteenth call from a reporter. The sixteenth message was from my mother.

I opened it before I could stop myself.

I always knew you were dirty. Now the whole world knows. Don’t contact me again.

The words landed harder than any physical blow. I locked the phone and set it face-down on the blanket.

Damien ended his call and crossed to me in three long strides. He sat on the edge of the bed, took both of my hands in his, and waited until I looked at him.

“We are going to survive this,” he said.

“How?” My voice came out small. “It’s everywhere. The board. The investors. Your name is being dragged through the mud because of me. And my own mother just confirmed what everyone is already thinking—that I’m exactly the whore Serena always said I was.”

Damien’s jaw flexed. He reached up and cupped my face, forcing me to hold his gaze.

“Listen to me carefully. That tape shows a scared twenty-two-year-old girl protecting her family the only way she knew how. It does not show a criminal. It does not show a gold-digger. And it sure as hell does not show a woman unworthy of being loved. I knew who you were when I married you. I knew when I chased you. I knew when I carried you out of that tunnel. Nothing on that screen changes a single fucking thing.”

Tears burned my eyes. “The world won’t see it that way.”

“Then the world can burn.” He leaned in and kissed me—slow, deliberate, possessive. When he pulled back, his forehead rested against mine. “I love you. Not the sanitized version. Not the version your family would have preferred. You. The woman who keeps choosing to fight even when everyone she loves turns against her. That is who I married. That is who I will keep choosing. Publicly. Permanently.”

The words settled deep in my chest, warm and terrifying and necessary.

Before I could answer, the hospital room door opened. Victoria Lang, Damien’s lead attorney, entered with a tablet and a grim expression.

“The upload is accelerating,” she said without preamble. “Full thirty-seven-minute version is now on three major file-sharing sites. We’ve filed emergency injunctions, but the damage is done. The board has called an emergency session for this afternoon. They’re going to demand you step down as CEO until the scandal clears—if it ever clears.”

Damien didn’t look away from me. “Let them demand.”

Victoria hesitated. “There’s more. Serena’s lawyer just filed a motion claiming the tape proves you were never a legitimate spouse—that the marriage was based on fraud and coercion. They’re asking a judge to fast-track an annulment hearing. If they succeed, every protection we put in place for Lila disappears.”

My stomach dropped.

Damien finally stood. The temperature in the room seemed to fall with him.

“Schedule a press conference,” he said. “One hour. I will address the tape myself.”

Victoria’s eyes widened. “That’s not advisable—”

“Do it.”

She nodded once and left.

Damien turned back to me. The fierce protectiveness in his expression had shifted into something even more dangerous—resolve.

“I’m going to stand in front of every camera in this city and tell them the truth,” he said. “That you are my wife. That I knew every piece of your past and chose you anyway. That anyone who comes for you comes for me.”

I reached for his hand. “You don’t have to destroy yourself for me.”

“I’m not destroying myself.” He brought my fingers to his lips. “I’m protecting what’s mine. And after the press conference, we are leaving the city for a few days. Somewhere no one can reach us. I need you alone. I need to remind us both what we’re fighting for.”

The promise in his voice sent a different kind of heat through me—quiet, steady, real.

He kissed me once more, deeper this time, until the monitors and the muted news channels and the waiting scandal all faded into the background.

Then Marcus stepped into the doorway, face pale.

“Sir. You need to see this.”

He held up his phone.

On the screen was a live traffic camera feed from the street outside the hospital. A black van had pulled up to the curb. The side door slid open. Three men in dark jackets stepped out—moving with the same professional precision as the ones who had taken me from the lake house.

But it was the fourth figure that made my blood freeze.

Serena.

She was supposed to be in federal custody.

Yet there she stood on the sidewalk, smiling up at the hospital windows as if she already knew exactly which room was mine.

Damien’s hand crushed mine.

The war we thought was over had just walked up to the front door.

“Move her now.”The inner door unlocked with a soft magnetic release. Damien was already there. He pulled Lila out by the wrist and kept his body between her and the open outer doorway. Marcu

The residual drug still left her body restless, every muscle tuned to the smallest sound. Damien was already on his feet, crossing the concrete floor in three silent strides.Marcus’s voice came through the internal speaker, low and controlled.
“East perimeter sensor just tripped. Single contact. Moving slow. No visual yet.”Damien’s hand found the weapon secured under the edge of the worktable. He did not raise his voice.
“Lights stay off. Cameras on passive. I want a clear shot of whoever is testing the line.”Lila sat up on the narrow couch. The thin blanket slipped from her shoulders. The air in the sealed room was cool against her skin. She watched Damien’s back as he leaned over the screens, the lines of his body rigid with focus. The red emergency indicators from the tower still flickered in the

Outside the sealed doors Serena stood perfectly still, one hand still resting against the glass, her smile unchanged even as the corridor behind her filled with running security teams and the distant crack of overridden access panels. Damien’s fingers tightened around Lila’s. He did not look at the board. He looked only at the woman on the other side of the glass. “Marcus,” he said, voice flat. “Full lockdown on this floor. Isolate the external feeds. Cut every nonessential system between here and the private elevator.” Marcus was already moving. His phone was at his ear. Two of the personal security detail stepped in front of the doors, hands near their weapons but not yet drawn. The directors had risen from their chairs. Some stared at Serena. Others stared at Damien as if the sirens were his fault. Damien’s

Lila’s breath caught. Damien’s hand closed over hers on the door, hard enough to bruise, and he pulled her back three full steps without a word. His other hand was already on the security panel. The red lockdown light flared brighter. Bolts drove home with a series of heavy thunks that shook the frame.Serena’s voice came through the wood, calm and almost conversational.
“You can delay me for a few minutes, Damien. That’s all. The people who arranged my release own half the judges in this city and most of the federal contacts who matter. Open the door, or I will have it taken off its hinges.”Damien did not answer her. He turned to Lila instead. His eyes were flat and cold in a way she had only seen when he was about to end something permanently.
“We leave through the service corridor. Now.”She nodded once. Her legs still felt unsteady from the drug that had nearly killed her fourteen hours

Full lockdown on this floor. Get the rapid-response team to the main entrance and the service tunnels. No one enters or leaves without my clearance.
