Chapter 17: The Other Side of the Dark

I woke to the sound of a heart monitor and the feel of a large, warm hand wrapped tightly around mine.

For a moment I thought I was still in the concrete room. Then the scent reached me—clean sheets, antiseptic, and underneath it the familiar dark spice of Damien’s cologne. My eyelids felt heavy, but I forced them open.

Soft light. White ceiling. A private hospital room.

Damien sat in a chair pulled so close to the bed that his knees touched the frame. His head was bowed, forehead resting against our joined hands. Dried blood still stained the collar of his shirt. He looked like he had not slept in days.

The moment I shifted, his head snapped up.

“Lila.”

My name left his mouth like a prayer and a command at the same time. He stood so fast the chair scraped backward, both hands framing my face, thumbs brushing my cheeks as if he needed to prove I was real.

“You’re awake,” he said, voice rough. “Do you know who I am? Do you know where you are?”

I swallowed. My throat felt raw. “Damien… you’re crushing my face.”

A broken sound escaped him—half laugh, half sob. He leaned down and pressed his forehead to mine, breathing me in like a man who had spent the last hours convinced he might never get the chance again.

“You were out for fourteen hours,” he murmured. “The drug was a heavy sedative mixed with something designed to suppress memory and motor function. The doctors flushed most of it. You’re going to be fine. Weak for a day or two, but fine.”

I lifted one shaky hand and touched the cut on his cheekbone. “You’re hurt.”

“It’s nothing.” His eyes searched mine, dark with residual fear. “Serena is in custody. The men who took you are either dead or talking. Your mother is safe and under full private guard. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

The words should have been enough. Instead, the weight of everything crashed over me at once—the concrete room, the syringe, my mother’s recorded rejection, the knowledge that my own sister had been willing to chemically erase pieces of me rather than lose.

Tears slipped free before I could stop them.

Damien didn’t tell me not to cry. He simply climbed onto the narrow hospital bed, careful of the IV in my arm, and pulled me against his chest. I buried my face in his torn shirt and let the sobs come. He held me through every one, one hand stroking my hair, the other splayed protectively across my back.

“I thought I lost you,” he admitted into my hair, voice so low I almost missed it. “When I saw that first photo… when I heard you say my name in that tunnel and then go limp… I have never been so fucking terrified in my life.”

I tilted my face up. The raw honesty in his eyes undid me more than any of Serena’s cruelties.

“You came,” I whispered. “Even after everything. Even with the video, the board, my family still hating me—you still came.”

“I will always come.” He kissed my forehead, then my eyelids, then the corner of my mouth with infinite care. “Your family can keep their blame and their blood. I choose you. Every version of you. The one who signed the bribe. The one who took me on our wedding night. The one who looked into that camera and told me not to stop looking. All of you.”

The kiss that followed was slow and deep and full of everything we had almost lost. It wasn’t about heat or claiming this time. It was about confirmation. About two people who had been dragged through hell and still found each other on the other side.

When we finally parted, I rested my head on his shoulder, listening to the steady beat of his heart beneath my ear.

“What happens now?” I asked.

Damien’s arms tightened. “Now we end it. Serena is facing multiple federal charges. The network she was working with is being dismantled. The board has been handled—anyone who sided with her is gone. And your mother…” He hesitated. “She has been told the full truth. All of it. Whether she chooses to accept it is up to her. But you will never have to face her alone again.”

I closed my eyes, letting his voice and his warmth settle the last of the fear.

For the first time in weeks, the future didn’t feel like a trap.

Then the hospital room door opened without warning.

Marcus stood there, face grim, phone in hand.

“Sir. We have a problem.”

Damien’s entire body went rigid. “What kind of problem?”

Marcus glanced at me, then back at Damien. “The motel video. The full recording. It’s being uploaded to multiple dark servers right now. Someone triggered a dead-man’s switch the moment Serena was taken into custody. We can’t stop all the copies.”

My blood turned to ice.

Damien’s hand found mine and squeezed hard enough to hurt.

On the muted television in the corner of the room, the first breaking-news banner began to scroll across the bottom of the screen.

The past had finally caught up.

And this time it was going public.

“Move her now.”The inner door unlocked with a soft magnetic release. Damien was already there. He pulled Lila out by the wrist and kept his body between her and the open outer doorway. Marcu

The residual drug still left her body restless, every muscle tuned to the smallest sound. Damien was already on his feet, crossing the concrete floor in three silent strides.Marcus’s voice came through the internal speaker, low and controlled.
“East perimeter sensor just tripped. Single contact. Moving slow. No visual yet.”Damien’s hand found the weapon secured under the edge of the worktable. He did not raise his voice.
“Lights stay off. Cameras on passive. I want a clear shot of whoever is testing the line.”Lila sat up on the narrow couch. The thin blanket slipped from her shoulders. The air in the sealed room was cool against her skin. She watched Damien’s back as he leaned over the screens, the lines of his body rigid with focus. The red emergency indicators from the tower still flickered in the

Chapter 21: The Sirens Rise The emergency sirens cut through the boardroom like a blade. Red lights strobed across the glass walls and turned every face the color of blood. Outside the sealed doors Serena stood perfectly still, one hand still resting against the glass, her smile unchanged even as the corridor behind her filled with running security teams and the distant crack of overridden access panels. Damien’s fingers tightened around Lila’s. He did not look at the board. He looked only at the woman on the other side of the glass. “Marcus,” he said, voice flat. “Full lockdown on this floor. Isolate the external feeds. Cut every nonessential system between here and the private elevator.” Marcus was already moving. His phone was at his ear. Two of the personal security detail stepped in front of the doors, hands near their weapons but not yet drawn. The directors had risen from their chairs. Some stared at Serena. Others stared at Damien as if the sirens were his fault. Damien’s

Lila’s breath caught. Damien’s hand closed over hers on the door, hard enough to bruise, and he pulled her back three full steps without a word. His other hand was already on the security panel. The red lockdown light flared brighter. Bolts drove home with a series of heavy thunks that shook the frame.Serena’s voice came through the wood, calm and almost conversational.
“You can delay me for a few minutes, Damien. That’s all. The people who arranged my release own half the judges in this city and most of the federal contacts who matter. Open the door, or I will have it taken off its hinges.”Damien did not answer her. He turned to Lila instead. His eyes were flat and cold in a way she had only seen when he was about to end something permanently.
“We leave through the service corridor. Now.”She nodded once. Her legs still felt unsteady from the drug that had nearly killed her fourteen hours

One of the men held a phone; the others kept their hands near their jackets.Damien was already moving. He stepped in front of me, body shielding the glass, phone at his ear.“Marcus. Full lockdown on this floor. Get the rapid-response team to the main entrance and the service tunnels. No one enters or leaves without my clearance. And find out how the fuck she is free.”I stayed frozen on the edge of the bed, the IV still taped to my arm, the muted television still looping fragments of the motel video.
