Marcus was moving before the call disconnected. Sprinting out of the media lab, he shouted for Lena. "Get two units to Amelia’s apartment. Now!"

Lena didn't waste time asking for context. She lunged for her radio while Marcus hurried toward the parking garage. His phone remained active, humming with static. Through the speaker, he heard the shallow sound of Amelia’s breathing.

"Listen to me, Amelia," Marcus said, forcing his voice into a measured calm. "Do not open the door."

A pause stretched

The voice carried neither urgency nor menace. It was calm, measured, and unexpectedly warm, as though greeting guests who had arrived precisely on time. Marcus raised a hand, signalling everyone to remain where they stood. He directed his flashlight down the narrow staircase, but its beam dissolved into the darkness before reaching the speaker."Who are you?" he called.A brief silence followed. Then the voice answered. "A better question would be why Daniel believed you should meet me."Marcus glanced at Thomas.A smile crossed the old man's face. "That sounds exactly like him."Marcus began descending the staircase, each step deliberate. The others followed closely, the ancient stone damp beneath their boots. The air grew cooler, carrying the faint scent of old paper and beeswax. Unlike the archive above, this place did not smell abandoned. Someone had lived and worked here for years. The staircase ended in a modest circular chamber illuminated by several oil lamps. Shelves carved d

The hidden archway narrowed almost immediately, forcing the group to proceed in single file.Marcus led the way, his flashlight cutting through the darkness ahead while Lena remained at the rear, listening for any sign that the pursuit had already entered the passage. Behind them, the muffled crash of collapsing stone echoed through the archive before fading into silence. Whether the barrier still stood or Samuel Ashcroft had been forced to retreat, none of them could tell. The uncertainty weighed heavily on every step. The tunnel itself was unlike the servant's passage beneath Ravenshollow. Its walls were older, fashioned from carefully dressed limestone blocks blackened by time. Small alcoves appeared at regular intervals, each containing the rusted remains of oil lamps that had long since burned dry.Richard traced his hand along the wall as they walked."These stones are centuries old."Samuel's words echoed in Marcus's mind. The first Ashcroft house was built above an older found

The splintered oak door burst inward with a deafening crash. Fragments of timber skidded across the stone floor as three figures in dark tactical clothing poured into the passage beyond. Their movements were disciplined and efficient, each covering a different angle before advancing. They carried compact flashlights and wore communication earpieces, but no insignia identified the organization they served.Marcus instinctively moved in front of Amelia and Elizabeth."Go!" Samuel commanded. No one obeyed. The old caretaker looked over his shoulder, his expression sterner than Marcus had yet seen."That wasn't a suggestion."A fourth figure appeared behind the others, carrying a hydraulic spreader designed to force reinforced doors apart. One glance told Marcus they had come prepared. They knew Ravenshollow better than they should.Samuel crossed to the damaged doorway. For an elderly man approaching eighty, his posture remained remarkably straight. The lead intruder raised a hand, signa

The first crack across the oak door widened with the next impact, sending splinters of ancient wood onto the stone floor. Dust drifted from the archway above as the iron bands groaned under the strain. Whoever stood on the other side had abandoned caution. They knew they had found something worth protecting.Marcus stepped away from the entrance and turned to Samuel."How long will it hold?"The old caretaker examined the reinforced hinges with the eye of someone who had maintained the archive for decades."Five minutes if we're fortunate. Less if they brought proper equipment."Lena looked around the chamber. "Is there another exit?"Samuel hesitated before nodding. "There is, but it cannot be opened from here."Richard frowned. "Then what's the point of it?""It was designed as an entrance for the next custodian, not as an escape."Marcus filed that away. Daniel had always planned for successors rather than survivors. Another blow landed against the door. This time, one of the iron

For a long moment, no one reached for the folder. The words "The Ashcroft Covenant" seemed almost too ordinary to explain everything they had uncovered over the past several weeks. Yet Marcus had learned that Daniel rarely reserved simple names for simple ideas.Samuel Ashcroft broke the silence. "My great grandfather helped write it."Richard looked up in surprise. "In 1838?"Samuel nodded. "He was one of six men and women who believed that certain discoveries could transform society faster than society could learn to use them wisely."Marcus opened the first page. The document was handwritten in dark ink that had faded only slightly with age. Despite the passage of nearly two centuries, the elegant script remained remarkably clear. At the top appeared a single sentence."Knowledge is a trust, never a possession."Marcus read it twice before continuing. The Covenant was not a legal charter or a political manifesto. It was a declaration of principles. Its authors argued that scientifi

The third impact against the front door reverberated through the entrance hall, sending dust drifting from the ceiling. Marcus counted the interval between each blow.Whoever stood outside was not attempting to force the door in a panic. The strikes were measured, suggesting trained professionals working methodically."They're using a breaching ram," Lena said quietly.Samuel Ashcroft nodded. "They've done this before."Another heavy thud echoed through the manor. Marcus looked toward the elderly caretaker."You mentioned another way out.""I did."Samuel turned without haste and crossed the hall toward the sweeping staircase. Rather than climbing it, he slipped through a narrow doorway concealed beneath the first flight of steps. It opened into what had once been a servant's passage, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side."Follow me," he said. The corridor descended gradually beneath the house, its stone walls worn smooth by generations of use. Brass lamps hung at re
