Ridge’s Pov

I didn’t miss the way she shivered, not one bit, because I could feel it right down to the bones of my fingers pressed against her.

Speaking of my fingers, they paused briefly on the next button, and I exhaled through my nose. I knew what that meant; or I thought I did. But with Blake, I couldn’t trust myself to assume anymore. Every little reaction could mean something, or nothing at all. She wasn’t like other women. She wasn’t even like the version of her I thought I knew from afar.

She was soft and hard at once. Fragile and tough. And damn if she wasn’t trying to find her footing in all of this, in us.

I paused halfway through and looked up, my eyes meeting her again in the mirror. “How far do you want me to unbutton this?” I asked with a forced smile on my face.

“All the way,” she murmured. “The fabric is quite delicate, so I don’t want to damage it by trying to undo the buttons myself. Nabi did them this morning.”

I gave a nod and tore my gaze away, refocusing

Ridge’s PovHer cheeks flushed the prettiest shade of pink, and it hit me like a punch to the gut. Not because she was embarrassed; Blake never stayed embarrassed for long, but because that spark was back. The one that lit up her eyes when she wasn’t guarded or annoyed or fighting ghosts in her sleep. I hadn’t seen it much lately. She was always tired from planning her bakery, or distracted about something, smiling with her mouth but not her eyes. Ever since we got to this beach house for our supposed honeymoon, something had been off. And not just because of the half-dead woman I carried in from the woods. Though, yeah, that hadn’t exactly helped as well. I was still waiting on my wife for want me before we made love, but I knew the only reason I was anxious about that was because of the token rule. Normally, I wouldn't care because I knew she had gone through a lot and I would want to give her all the time she needed until she was ready. Blake cleared her throat and stepped ba

Blake’s Pov I woke up to the sound of crashing waves from afar, competing with arguing voices drifting from somewhere downstairs. And then, faint traces of a familiar scent. I blink my eyes opened, my gaze landing on the black velvet box lying on the nightstand, the one that held my wedding ring. I must have removed it last night before I started baking, and I remembered slipping it into my pocket. Right before Ridge showed up with a naked woman in his hands. Okay, I knew I could also describe her in some other type of way than “naked” but no one could blame me now, could they? It had been a week since we got to this beach house, and shit had managed to find me here. That must have been why I had that nightmare again last night, and this time, it was with a touch of drama; with me running through the woods. I wasn't sure if that bloodied woman being here had added that touch, or it was overhearing that it might be about me. Sighing, I rubbed my face, then held my head in

Ridge’s PovFinally, I had finished with Roman in the office, and was just coming from checking on the woman. Nabi and Henry were still by her side, and Roman would trade places in two hours so that Henry could guard the house for the rest of the night. Now, I walked to the room, wondering if Blake was asleep yet or not. She had barely said anything at dinner… kept picking at her food with that far-off look in her eyes. I had kissed her head, rubbed her back, but she just nodded, murmured something, and said she was tired.I walked into the room as quietly as possible to make sure I wasn't waking her up if she was asleep.I pushed the door open slowly, quietly, careful not to wake her if she was already out. The room was mostly dark, lit only by the low bedside lamp we always kept on at night and the blue light of the moon slipping through the curtains. At first, everything looked still, but the I realized that something was wrong with this picture.I didn’t catch it immediately… just

Blake’s POVThe dream started in silence and it wasn't the soft kind, no, not the kind that comes with snowfall or sleepy mornings… but the thick, unnatural kind. The kind that wrapped around everything and pressed against your skin like plastic. The kind that whispered: something is wrong, deep into one’s soul. I was standing in the kitchen of my childhood home, but only I wasn’t me now. I seemed smaller, younger actually, with my bare feet on the cold tile. My hands were trembling and everything in the house looked normal… but it wasn’t. I could tell because this wasn't how the house was when I could remember it. Here, the lights flickered above, and I could hear the old refrigerator in my mother’s kitchen humming in that familiar, rhythmic way I hadn’t heard in years. The scent of bleach and rust drifted up my nose, making things feel even more strange than they already were. Then, like a camera lens snapping into focus, I knew why I was there. I always came here, in the b

Blake’s PovWhat was Ridge talking about? That was all I had been able to think of since we took the woman into the spare guest bedroom, and Nabi and Henry by her side, while Roman and Ridge went to his office to talk. I sat there at the kitchen counter, thinking about what he had meant by council land when he said that? “Luna?” I heard someone call behind me and I almost jumped out of my skin. It was Nabi. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you.” she said. I waved it off with my free hand, as the other was pressing against my chest. “It's fine, dear. I’m the one in deep thought. You did nothing wrong.” I told her. “I wanted to ask if I could borrow any of your clothes for the woman. I would go for mine, but I don't think these materials I like to wear so much would be so great against her bruised body.” I nodded quickly, pushing back from the counter. “Yes… yes, of course. Come with me, I’ll grab something soft. Cotton, maybe a loose dress.” As we walked up the stairs tow

Blake’s Pov“I seriously could get used to this. This is the best scone I have ever had. I'm telling you.” Roman said and I shook my head in laughter, rolling my eyes at how ridiculous he seemed, talking about a baked good. Henry smiled. “Yes, I could too, but you don't see me behaving like I've never eaten before,” he said, teasing him but Roman just snorted at him, and then he continued eating his scone. Dusting my hands on the apron I had around my waist, I looked around the kitchen for my phone, a small frown on my face. “What are you looking for, Luna?” I heard Nabi ask from over the sink, and I looked at her over my shoulder. “My phone, Nabi. I thought I came down with it earlier but it's not here.”“Oh, that. I saw it in the living room a while back. Let me go bring it for you.” she said. Shaking my head, I said. “Oh, not to worry. I'll go take it myself. Thank you. I need to snap this and add it to my online profile.” Nabi paused, and she asked if I was sure, so I nodded
