INICIAR SESIÓNCallie's POV
Nobody in that room moved. The man in the doorway did not seem to notice or care. He walked in like he had all the time in the world and crossed directly to where I was standing and stopped in front of me with those eyes that had not changed in six years. Then he did something nobody else in that room had done all evening. He looked past me. He looked at Lily. And he crouched down. Right there in the middle of the exhibition room in his expensive suit he got down to her level and looked at her properly. Not the way adults look at children when they are being polite. The way you look at someone you actually want to see. "Is this your rabbit?" he asked. Lily looked at him for a moment. Assessing. She was very particular about who she trusted and she took her time about it. "His name is Mr. Rabbit," she said. "That is an excellent name." He said it seriously. "Very clear. No confusion about what he is." Lily considered this. "That is what I thought too." He smiled. Then he stood and looked at me. "Michael Reyes," he said. Loud enough that the people nearest to us could hear it clearly. "We knew each other before all of this. You were the best thing about the year we met Callie." The room absorbed this information in the way rooms absorb things that are more interesting than what was happening before. Before I could respond Derek was there. He moved fast for someone who had been standing on the other side of the room. One moment he was beside Vanessa. The next he was between me and Michael with his shoulders set and his jaw tight and something in his eyes that I had never quite seen there before. "My daughter does not need strange men crouching in front of her," he said. His voice was controlled but only just. "And my wife does not get to bring people like this into a room where Lily is present." "Your wife," Michael said. Not a question. Just two words repeated back in a tone that made Derek's jaw tighten further. "That is what I said." Michael looked at him the way you look at weather. Noting it. Not particularly concerned by it. Vanessa chose that moment to speak. "I have to say." Her voice carried beautifully across the space between us. Warm and wondering and perfectly poisonous. "I always thought there was something behind the urgency for this divorce." She touched Derek's arm lightly. "Now I wonder if we understand the full picture." Several heads turned. A woman near the juice table leaned toward the person beside her. Derek turned to me with something cold and final in his expression. "Is this why?" His voice dropped. "All of it. The conditions. The delays. You have been—" "Do not finish that sentence," I said. "I will finish whatever sentence I want." He stepped closer. "You do not get to parade men through my daughter's life and then stand there looking at me like I am the problem." "Derek." I kept my voice completely even. "You have not visited your daughter once since she was diagnosed. You removed her name from your will. You let your girlfriend cancel her medical appointment." I held his gaze. "And you are standing in this room right now making this about you." His eyes went flat. Michael reached into his jacket pocket and produced a card. Clean white. Simple. He held it out toward me without looking at Derek at all. "Call me if you need anything," he said. "No strings. No conditions." I reached for it. Derek's hand moved faster. He took the card from between my fingers and tore it once. Clean and deliberate. Then he held the two pieces and looked at me with something that was not quite anger and not quite fear and was more dangerous than either. "If you contact him," he said quietly. "I will make sure you regret it. And it will have nothing to do with money." The room was completely silent. Lily was watching her father from beside her painting with Mr. Rabbit held tight against her chest and her eyes very wide and very still. Michael stood exactly where he was. Not moving. Not reacting. Just watching Derek with an expression that was almost patient. I looked at the two torn pieces of card in Derek's hand. Then I looked at him. "You should be careful Derek," I said quietly. "Threats only work on people who still have something to lose." Nobody spoke. Derek stared at me like he was looking at someone he did not recognize. And for the first time in four years I did not look away first.Callie's POVThe judge did not raise her voice. She did not need to."Counsel." She looked at Derek's lawyer with an expression that had left warmth somewhere far behind. "Approach."The room went very still. My lawyer's pen was already in her hand. She stood and walked to the bench and Derek's lawyer followed and the three of them spoke in voices too low for the room to hear but not too low for the room to feel.Derek sat at the table. He had seen the look on his lawyer's face when he was called forward. He had followed the direction of attention to his phone on the table. He had read the screen. He did not look at me.His jaw was set and his hands were flat on the table in front of him and he stared at a fixed point on the wall with the expression of a man who was recalculating something very fast. The judge returned to her position."This court has become aware of communication that raises questions about the motivations behind this custody petition," she said. "Specifically whethe
Callie's POV"Ms. Dawson has demonstrated a consistent pattern of poor judgment."Derek's lawyer had a voice designed for rooms like this one. Measured. Authoritative. The kind of voice that made things sound like facts even when they were constructions."She introduced an unauthorized individual into her daughter's medical environment. An individual with whom she has a prior romantic history. An individual her husband had formally and legally flagged as a risk to the family unit."I sat at the table beside my own lawyer and listened to my life being narrated by someone who had never met me."The viral footage documents her aggressive behavior in a public space in the presence of children. The daycare report confirms a pattern of conflict surrounding the minor child. We submit that Ms. Dawson's judgment during this critical period has been compromised by personal interests that have consistently taken priority over her daughter's stability."He paused for effect."Dr. Reyes is not a c
Callie's POV"Derek please."Five days. I had been saying those two words in different combinations for five days. On the phone. Through his lawyer. In a text he read and did not answer. Please withdraw it. Please wait. Please think about what this does to her.He had not withdrawn anything. The filing had arrived on a Tuesday. Formal and thick and full of language that turned my life into evidence. Callie Dawson demonstrates erratic judgment in matters concerning the minor child. Inappropriate associations introduced into the child's medical environment. Unstable decision making during a documented health crisis.Michael's name appeared fourteen times in eleven pages.I counted.---I sat across from my lawyer on Wednesday morning with the filing on the table between us and she walked me through it section by section with the careful voice of someone delivering a diagnosis."They have used two external incidents as supporting evidence," she said. "The first is a video clip from a pub
Callie's POV"She is stable."Michael said it the moment the monitor beside Lily's bed settled into a steady rhythm. He said it quietly and professionally and without any drama but I felt my knees go soft anyway and grabbed the bed rail with both hands."What happened to her," I said."A treatment related complication." He was still looking at her chart. "A specific inflammatory response that Dr. Anderson's protocol does not screen for because it is rare. Rare enough that most standard programs miss it completely." He set the chart down. "If she had gone to the general ER tonight they would have treated the fever. They would not have found what was underneath it."I looked at Lily. She was asleep already. The fever had dropped in under an hour. Her face was smooth and her breathing was even and Mr. Rabbit was tucked under her arm exactly where he always was."She could have had a cardiac event," Michael said. Simply. Not for impact. Just because I needed to know. "Within a few hours.
Callie's POV"The numbers are not going in the right direction."Dr. Anderson set the folder down and did not open it. He had stopped opening folders in front of me. I think he had decided that watching me read the numbers was harder than just saying them out loud."How bad," I said."The window we discussed at the beginning." He paused. "It is closing faster than I projected. Significantly faster."The office was very quiet."She has had a great deal of stress in the past few weeks," he said carefully. "I want to be honest with you because I think you already know this. Stress accelerates everything in a case like hers. Her body is using energy to process things it should not have to process at her age."I thought about Lily going silent at the park. About her sitting on her bed in the dark holding Mr. Rabbit so tight. About the way she had looked at Derek in the hallway and asked if he was there to say sorry."What do we do," I said."We need a decision about the trial," he said. "S
Callie's POVHe picked up on the third ring."I already said what I said.""Derek please." I kept my voice low. Lily was in the next room and the walls in this house were not thick. "She has been asking about her birthday for weeks. She made a list. She wrote your name at the top of it before she wrote down any presents. Just your name."Silence."I will not contact Michael again," I said. "I will stay away from him completely. Whatever you need me to do. Just do not take her birthday from her.""You should have thought about that before you met him in parking lots.""We are getting divorced Derek. You are living with another woman. I met a doctor about our daughter's treatment—""You met your ex boyfriend," he said. "Do not dress it up."I pressed my hand flat against the kitchen counter and breathed."We were together for eight months six years ago," I said. "He is a pediatric hematologist. That is the only reason I contacted him.""While you are still legally my wife." His voice dr
