Callie's POV

"Ms. Dawson has demonstrated a consistent pattern of poor judgment."

Derek's lawyer had a voice designed for rooms like this one. Measured. Authoritative. The kind of voice that made things sound like facts even when they were constructions.

"She introduced an unauthorized individual into her daughter's medical environment. An individual with whom she has a prior romantic history. An individual her husband had formally and legally flagged as a risk to the family unit."

I sat at the table beside my own lawyer and listened to my life being narrated by someone who had never met me.

"The viral footage documents her aggressive behavior in a public space in the presence of children. The daycare report confirms a pattern of conflict surrounding the minor child. We submit that Ms. Dawson's judgment during this critical period has been compromised by personal interests that have consistently taken priority over her daughter's stability."

He paused for effect.

"Dr. Reyes is not a concerned physician. He is a man with a personal connection to the mother of a vulnerable child who has inserted himself into a medical situation in a way that serves his access to Ms. Dawson rather than the child's welfare."

I kept my face still.

I had practiced keeping my face still for this exact moment. My lawyer had told me on Tuesday that whatever I heard in that room I was not to react visibly. That the camera of a courtroom was always running even when there was no camera.

I kept my face still and I listened to a version of my life that I did not recognize and I breathed.

---

My lawyer requested that the daycare incident report be read into the record in full.

Derek's lawyer objected. The judge overruled.

The court clerk read it aloud in the flat even tone of someone reading a document rather than a story. Name. Date. Location. Staff member present. And then the words themselves exactly as the worker had written them down.

Noah had told Lily at the gate in the presence of four other children that sick kids do not get birthday parties.

They get funerals instead.

The clerk kept reading. The report noted Lily's response. That she had gone silent. That she had not spoken for the remainder of the pickup period. That the staff member had found her sitting alone near the fence still holding her rabbit twenty minutes after the other children had left with their parents.

The clerk finished and set the paper down.

The judge had not moved during the reading. But something in the set of her expression had shifted in a way that Derek's lawyer noticed because he shuffled his papers once and then again without looking up.

Nobody had planned this moment.

Nobody had choreographed the sympathy that moved through the room like a slow tide.

It had just happened because the words were true and true things land differently than constructed ones.

---

Vanessa was called to address the viral video.

She took the stand with the same composure she brought everywhere. Dressed carefully. Poised. She had done this before in the sense that she had performed sincerity in public many times and she was good at it.

My lawyer stood up.

"You stated in your written submission that a concerned bystander captured the footage on their personal device and sent it to you," she said. "Is that correct."

"That is correct," Vanessa said.

"And you shared it from your own account with the caption attached."

"I shared it because I was concerned about the child's welfare."

"The metadata on the original file shows it was filmed on your device," my lawyer said. "Your phone model. Your account ID embedded in the upload data." She set a printed page on the edge of the stand. "Would you like to revise your answer."

Vanessa looked at the page.

Something moved through her expression very quickly. There and gone. But the judge saw it. My lawyer saw it. The people in the row behind Derek saw it.

"I may have been mistaken about who filmed it," Vanessa said carefully.

"You filmed it yourself from a seated position," my lawyer said. "Angled upward to frame Ms. Dawson as standing over you. You then waited four hours before posting it with a caption you wrote yourself." She paused. "That is not concern for a child. That is a recording strategy."

Derek's lawyer objected.

The judge noted the inconsistency in the record.

Vanessa stepped down with her composure mostly intact and her story mostly in pieces.

---

The judge shuffled her papers.

"Before I address temporary custody arrangements," she said. "I want to note for the record that this court takes seriously any documented language directed at a child of this age in any setting. The incident report will be retained as part of this case file."

She looked at both tables.

"I am prepared to issue a preliminary ruling on—"

The phone on Derek's table lit up.

He had left it face up. It was visible to the row of seats directly behind the table. His lawyer was looking at the judge. Derek was looking at the judge.

But the people in the row behind him were not.

My lawyer was not.

Her eyes dropped to the screen for exactly one second and then came back up and her expression did not change but something in it did. Something small and significant.

I leaned the smallest fraction toward her.

She did not look at me.

But she slid her legal pad two inches in my direction so I could read the four words she had written at the bottom of the page in careful block letters.

VANESSA. JUST GET THE KID.

The judge was still speaking.

Derek had not looked at his phone.

He did not know yet what was sitting face up on the table behind him.

But my lawyer already had her pen in her hand.

Callie's POVThe judge did not raise her voice. She did not need to."Counsel." She looked at Derek's lawyer with an expression that had left warmth somewhere far behind. "Approach."The room went very still. My lawyer's pen was already in her hand. She stood and walked to the bench and Derek's lawyer followed and the three of them spoke in voices too low for the room to hear but not too low for the room to feel.Derek sat at the table. He had seen the look on his lawyer's face when he was called forward. He had followed the direction of attention to his phone on the table. He had read the screen. He did not look at me.His jaw was set and his hands were flat on the table in front of him and he stared at a fixed point on the wall with the expression of a man who was recalculating something very fast. The judge returned to her position."This court has become aware of communication that raises questions about the motivations behind this custody petition," she said. "Specifically whethe

Callie's POV"Derek please."Five days. I had been saying those two words in different combinations for five days. On the phone. Through his lawyer. In a text he read and did not answer. Please withdraw it. Please wait. Please think about what this does to her.He had not withdrawn anything. The filing had arrived on a Tuesday. Formal and thick and full of language that turned my life into evidence. Callie Dawson demonstrates erratic judgment in matters concerning the minor child. Inappropriate associations introduced into the child's medical environment. Unstable decision making during a documented health crisis.Michael's name appeared fourteen times in eleven pages.I counted.---I sat across from my lawyer on Wednesday morning with the filing on the table between us and she walked me through it section by section with the careful voice of someone delivering a diagnosis."They have used two external incidents as supporting evidence," she said. "The first is a video clip from a pub

Callie's POV"She is stable."Michael said it the moment the monitor beside Lily's bed settled into a steady rhythm. He said it quietly and professionally and without any drama but I felt my knees go soft anyway and grabbed the bed rail with both hands."What happened to her," I said."A treatment related complication." He was still looking at her chart. "A specific inflammatory response that Dr. Anderson's protocol does not screen for because it is rare. Rare enough that most standard programs miss it completely." He set the chart down. "If she had gone to the general ER tonight they would have treated the fever. They would not have found what was underneath it."I looked at Lily. She was asleep already. The fever had dropped in under an hour. Her face was smooth and her breathing was even and Mr. Rabbit was tucked under her arm exactly where he always was."She could have had a cardiac event," Michael said. Simply. Not for impact. Just because I needed to know. "Within a few hours.

Callie's POV"The numbers are not going in the right direction."Dr. Anderson set the folder down and did not open it. He had stopped opening folders in front of me. I think he had decided that watching me read the numbers was harder than just saying them out loud."How bad," I said."The window we discussed at the beginning." He paused. "It is closing faster than I projected. Significantly faster."The office was very quiet."She has had a great deal of stress in the past few weeks," he said carefully. "I want to be honest with you because I think you already know this. Stress accelerates everything in a case like hers. Her body is using energy to process things it should not have to process at her age."I thought about Lily going silent at the park. About her sitting on her bed in the dark holding Mr. Rabbit so tight. About the way she had looked at Derek in the hallway and asked if he was there to say sorry."What do we do," I said."We need a decision about the trial," he said. "S

Callie's POVHe picked up on the third ring."I already said what I said.""Derek please." I kept my voice low. Lily was in the next room and the walls in this house were not thick. "She has been asking about her birthday for weeks. She made a list. She wrote your name at the top of it before she wrote down any presents. Just your name."Silence."I will not contact Michael again," I said. "I will stay away from him completely. Whatever you need me to do. Just do not take her birthday from her.""You should have thought about that before you met him in parking lots.""We are getting divorced Derek. You are living with another woman. I met a doctor about our daughter's treatment—""You met your ex boyfriend," he said. "Do not dress it up."I pressed my hand flat against the kitchen counter and breathed."We were together for eight months six years ago," I said. "He is a pediatric hematologist. That is the only reason I contacted him.""While you are still legally my wife." His voice dr
