The surgery

DAMIAN

She was on her knees.

Crying. Begging me to do the surgery.

I've never seen someone caring so much for me like that.

“Let me help you walk again. For you. For me.”

My chest caved in.

She was taking up too much space in my life.

In my office. At my house. In my head. And soon... In my heart

The fake marriage... it wasn’t fake anymore.

The way she laid her head on my chest. The way she massaged my feet. The way she looked at me was like I wasn’t broken.

I couldn’t handle it.

If I let her stay, I’d fall. And if I fell, I’d lose her too. Like I lost them.

“No.”

The word cut through the air.

“Damian, please—”

“I SAID NO!” I slammed my hand on the armrest. The pain grounded me. “Don’t you ever bring that up to me again!”

She flinched. God, she flinched.

“Get up,” I said, my voice dead. “You’re pathetic.”

I rolled away. Because if I stayed one more second, I’d kiss her.

And that would ruin everything.

For 2 days, I iced her out.

Ate in my office. Slept in the other room.

I needed distance. Before this became real.

On day 3, I booked the flight.

“I’m leaving,” I told her. Didn’t meet her eyes. “Europe. 5 days. Business.”

“Damian—”

“Just act like my wife,” I cut her off. “For Elias.”

I left. Because if I stayed, I’d tell her the truth:

That I was terrified of how much I needed her in my life, that how much I want to touch her.

DAY 2. LONDON. 11:47 PM.

My phone buzzed. It was the bodyguard I placed to assure the security of Arabella.

“Mr. Harrison, we lost Ms. Harrison. Her car is at the grocery store. Groceries in the trunk. She’s gone.”

My blood turned to ice.

“Find her. Now.”

2 hours later. My phone lit up.

It was an unknown number.

He sent a video.

I pressed play. My heart sank when I recognize the figure of the person in the video.

Arabella.

Tied to a chair. Duct tape over her mouth. A purple bruise on her cheek.

She was crying. Her eyes were begging me.

Text: $2M. 24h. Or she dies. -R

RACHEL.

The room tilted.

I threw my phone across the suite. It exploded against the wall.

“GET ME A FLIGHT!” I roared. “NOW!”

“Sir, the earliest flight—”

“8 HOURS!”

“8 HOURS!” I screamed. I slammed my fists on my useless legs. “I’M IN A GODDAMN WHEELCHAIR! I CAN’T EVEN GO TO HER!”

For 8 hours I sat there.

Watching her 10-second video on repeat.Begging her to be alright.

Begging all the gods if they exist to save her.

Please, please, be alright my love.

Her muffled cries. Her tears.

This was my fault.

I pushed her away. I left her alone because I was scared of how real this was getting.

The team found her in 14 hours. In a warehouse.

Alive.

When I landed, I didn’t go home. I went straight to the hospital. To her.

HOSPITAL ROOM. 3 AM.

She was asleep. Bandaged. Bruised.

Her perfect face was bruised, and it's my damn fault.

Looking at her figure, so small.

I pulled my chair to her bed and took her hand.

For 12 hours. I didn’t let go.

When she woke up, she whispered my name.

“Damian?”

It broke me in a way, how can I take away your pain Arabella? How can you not hate me?

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. My voice was raw. “I’m so sorry. I didn't protect you like I promised. I'm sorry if you were like that because of me..."

Tears fell onto our joined hands. She gently cupped my face in her small hands and pressed her forehead against mine.

“And when you needed me... I couldn’t come,” I said. I looked down at my legs. “Because of this. I’m useless, Arabella. I can’t protect you.”

She shook her head. “No—”

“Yes,” I said. And for the first time in 5 years, I meant it.

“Book the surgery,” I said. “Switzerland. Next week.”

Her breath caught.

“I’m done running,” I said. “I’m done hiding in this chair.”

She suddenly threw herself into my arms, and I caught her against my chest, holding her as tightly as I dared. I buried my face in her hair, breathing in her familiar scent—the soft, delicate fragrance that was uniquely hers. I closed my eyes, letting it fill my lungs, letting myself savor the simple comfort of having her this close again. God only knew how much I had missed this. How much I had missed her.

These past few days had felt unbearably long without her. Every hour without her had dragged on, leaving an emptiness I couldn't seem to fill. But now she was here, wrapped in my arms, her warmth pressed against me, and for the first time in days, I felt like I could finally breathe again.

I tightened my arms around her and pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head.

I didn't want to let go. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

“Thank you so much, Damian…” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “I’ll be there for your surgery. I promise I won’t let go of your hand. Not even for a second.”

Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, her emotions threatening to spill over. She gave me a small, trembling smile before tightening her fingers around mine, as if she were already making that promise.

I’m going to walk to you, Arabella. I’m going to be the man you deserve

The door opened.Elias stood there in a robe. And behind him, a photographer. With a camera.“I just wanted to get a photo,” Elias said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “For the family album. My new granddaughter and grandson. In bed. Together.”Damian went rigid beside me.“Get out,” he said. His voice was ice. Final.“Damian,” Elias sighed. Like he was talking to a child. “Don’t be difficult. It’s just one photo. For me.”The photographer lifted the camera. The lens pointed right at us.My heart was hammering. I could feel Damian’s tension. His anger.I didn’t think. I just moved.I shifted closer to Damian. And I laid my head on his chest. His heart was pounding. Hard. Against my cheek. Like a caged animal. For a second he froze. Then, slowly, hesitantly... his arm came around me.He pulled me closer. And buried his face in my hair. His breath was warm on my scalp.“Like this?” I whispered, my voice shaking. Only he could hear me.He didn’t answer. He just held me tighter.

The guest wing was bigger than my entire apartment.Marble floors. Silk curtains. A fireplace. And one bed.King-size one. In the middle of the room.My stomach dropped.“Mr. Harrison, Mrs. Harrison,” the maid said with a smile. “Your suite for the weekend. Dinner will be served at 8. Mr. Elias requests your presence.”She closed the door behind her.Silence.I turned to Damian. He glanced at the bed, then at me, before looking back at the bed.His jaw was clenched.“There must be another room,” I said quickly. Too quickly. “A couch. Anything.”Damian rolled to the door and opened it. “There isn’t.”He closed it again.“For 48 hours,” he said, his voice flat. “We act like a couple. For him.”His own words from earlier. • The CEO Couldn't Walk So I Made Him Fall For Me   The Ring

The Harrison mansion looked like a castle.White marble. Gates taller than my apartment building. Guards. And waiting at the top of the steps, leaning on a cane, was him.Elias Harrison.Damian’s grandfather. The devil who built an empire.“Let’s go,” Damian said from the backseat. His voice gave nothing away. The chauffeur opened my door. And I got out wearing the red dress again. And the ring. The massive diamond on my right hand caught the morning sun and blinded everyone.I’d put it on in the car. My hands were shaking so bad I almost dropped it.Damian rolled out in his wheelchair. His eyes went straight to my hand.He didn’t look away.He stared. Long. Hard. At the ring on my finger. Like he was memorizing it. Like he was seeing me as his wife for the first time.My throat went dry.“Good morning, Grandfather,” Damian said, his voice flat.Elias Harrison’s eyes narrowed. Then they moved to me. To the ring. To my hand, it was trembling.“So,” the old man said. His voice was grave

The car was silent. The kind of silence that presses on your chest until you can’t breathe.I sat as far away from Damian Harrison as the leather seats would allow. The red dress felt like it was burning my skin.My lips still tingled. His hands had been on my hips.He stood up for me.In front of everyone. In front of Rachel.“What was that?” Damian finally said. His voice was low. Dangerous. He wasn’t looking at me. He was staring out the window at the city lights.“I…” I swallowed. “I’m sorry. I just—”“Don’t.” He cut me off. “Don’t apologize for doing your job.”Oh, I’m just doing my job. I’m his contractual wife, after all. Saving him from humiliation is the least I can do. That’s all this ever was to him—a job.I blinked. “Then what is it?”“It’s the fact that in 10 minutes, that photo is going to be on every news site, every blog, every gossip page in the country.” He turned to me then. His dark eyes were unreadable. “Damian Harrison kisses his new wife at a charity gala.”My s
