Alex’s pov

The moment I walked into the ballroom, I was joined by my mother.

“Care for a drink?” she asked.

I looked around and exhaled loudly. She noticed I was getting irritated.

“Alex, I just want a drink with you, that is all.”

“Mother, there’s no such thing as just a drink with me. There’s always a problem and I’m not ready to talk yet. To be very honest, I just came to this gala to show off my husband and maybe cause a little ruckus or two and go home. All the sentimental things you’re trying to do, it’s not going to work.”

“Alex,” she cut me off, “I just want to have a drink with my son. Is it so hard for you to see that?”

We stared at each other for a while. I looked past her and saw Dennis seated alone at a table. He seemed to be on his phone. I’d already pissed him off too much anyway, so I might as well have this drink with Mother.

We went to the bar, sat down, and the bartender gave us drinks.

“I saw you and Sophia by the balcony.”

I scoffed. “Yeah.”

“What does she want?”

Dennis’s povThe moment I got into the hospital, I met up with a nurse who nodded to me.“Your mother was just wheeled into the ward where we would prep her for the surgery.”“Can I go see her?”“Of course.”I followed her through the hallways, praying that she would get better after the surgery. She was the only one I had. I didn’t want to hear stories. I just wanted her to be safe. The moment we got into the ward, I saw the doctors. They were giving her a few injections and checking her vitals. The doctor in charge looked at me.“Welcome. Don’t you look overdressed for the surgery?”I looked down to see I was still wearing the suit from the gala. “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m just coming back from a party.”“Pretty overdressed for that party… unless there were ministers and governors in that party.” He chuckled.I kept a straight face.He cleared his throat. “So, your mother is being prepped…”“I know. The nurse told me,” I cut him off with a nod.He threw a nasty look at the nurse and then t

Alex’s povI waited for it as it rang over and over again, but then no one picked up the call. I wondered whether he was still mad at me or if he was genuinely not listening to his phone ring. The only problem was, he was mad at me, and I had seen him mad in the past. He tended to avoid picking up calls.“Well, if he’s not going to pick up my call, there’s no need for me to go after him,” I said to myself.I put my phone into my pocket and started towards the garage. But when I reached the door, my mother who was talking to a bartender about drinks or something of that sort turned to me. The look that she gave was different from what I expected.“Excuse me,” she said to the bartender as she walked towards me.“What are you doing?” she asked me.“I’m getting back into the gala.”“No, you’re not.” She shoved me back.“Mom, please stop it.”She pushed me back again as if she wanted to make a scene.“Mom, you’re making a scene. Look around you.”“I don’t care,” she cut me off. “You must b

Alex’s pov“I get it. But you see, I can’t do it on my own. And that’s where you come in. You know more about these things than I do. You know the loopholes. You know where to fix things.”I scoffed. “I’m the same person you called incompetent the other day.”“Yeah, well, I was angry. I call everybody incompetent. I mean, the waiter over there looks like he’s going to get hammered tonight because he thinks his life is miserable. And look, there… over there, the security guard. He looks like he’s about to let in a couple of robbers into his room. I wouldn’t blame him if I was in a room with people far better than I am. I would want to do something dangerous to the people in this room.”I took in deep breaths. I looked at my father. He was fidgeting. He was nervous.“Fine, I’ll do your stupid meeting. Where are they?”“Over there.”But before I could go over, Dennis came to me.“Alex, we need to talk.”I looked at him. “Not now, I’m in the middle of something.”He shook his head. “Now.”

Sophia’s pov“I want Alex,” I finally said. And she gave a nod.“Then what are we waiting for? We go in there, and then we take Alex, and we separate him from Dennis. Marcus and Julian… they will talk to Dennis and make sure he regrets being here. While you talk to Alex, try to see him and make him remember the past. You guys had past times, right? Romantic ones, if I might say.”I nodded. “Yes, we did.”She smiled. “Good. Make him remember that. Don’t stop until his memory comes back, because it’s very important to hit him where it counts. Very low. Don’t hold back. Tell him straight up how you feel. Tell him how this is destroying the relationship you people had. And make sure he understands that without you, his life is going to go to shambles. “Don’t stop. In case that doesn’t work, go business. Talk about how your companies would thrive together; how your father has put in a lot of money into his father’s business. Because without your investment, it’s nothing. Try to talk to hi

Sophia’s povI sat by the bar, drinking, as I crossed my legs, staring across the ballroom. I could see Dennis and Alex engrossed in a conversation. They were really into what they were talking about, and, to be fair, it pissed me off. I kept my mouth shut by putting it on the glass and taking sip after sip of the expensive wine.My phone buzzed as I looked at it. It was from Lydia. I picked it up. “Hey, how’s it going?” Lydia messaged, as I shrugged. If only she could see how exhausted I was in this place. “I don’t know. It’s going good, I guess,” I replied back. She sent me a laughing emoji as I frowned. She then called me on the phone as I picked it up after the first drink.“What?” I said. “I’m trying to be busy here,” she laughed. “It’s not going well, is it?”I scoffed. “What do you think? Dennis and Alex are over there talking to each other in a serious mood like something is up, and I just wish I could get Alex alone so I can be able to talk to him.”“Should I come in there
