Leticia’s pov

A ripple of shifting in seats, a few exchanged looks spread out but I was done being pushed around. It was time to handle my family in silence and shut these fat bastards up.

I let the silence hang for a moment longer before I sat back. My heart pounded but my voice stayed steady.

One of the women got up to face me. “I apologize for the way we have treated this matter. In fact. We all are. But what we’re trying to explain is that it’s not personal on our part. It’s strategic.”

“Perhaps we should concentrate on how to strategize without policing my son’s marriage.”

That indeed, shut her up.

She nodded and sat down as we went back to the main meeting.

It didn’t take long before the meeting was over and everyone except me and my husband stayed behind.

Lyon looked at the folder on the table before him as he sighed and rubbed his temple.

“They’re finally all gone,” I said softly, just to break up that sudden silence.

“I know.” His voice was low, flat. “Doesn’t change the fac

Leticia’s povThis was a welcome distraction for me as I saw it was my PA.“Hello,” I said.“Ma’am your husband is already in the office grounds. He is looking for you. He has the Board Meeting on hold for you but he doesn’t know how much longer he can keep them.”“Tell him I’m coming.”“Alright ma’am.”I hung up and sighed as I started to think of how I would get back into the restaurant and have to deal with that woman. All I could do was pray there was some kind of earthquake to get me out of here. With a deep breath, I walked back in to see she was almost done with her meal.“Is everything okay?” She asked like she actually cared. “You seem tense.”“Yeah,” I have a fake smile. “Just work related.”“Anyway. Back to what I was saying. I mean, think about it,” she pressed on, leaning in slightly like she was letting me in on a grand scheme. “Two young, attractive people from two strong families. The public would eat it up. And the company…” she gave a light laugh, “ it would be a PR

Leticia’s povShe sighed. “Look, I’m only telling you this because I’m looking out for you and your family. I care about our children’s future. You know my husband is on the board and sure you might hear something’s from your board in front of them but behind they say and do a lot. So be careful. If he continues down the path he’s taking. It won’t help. He’ll be closing doors that should be open for him.”The waiter who has gone to get her new meals came back and placed a new plate before her but she didn’t care.“Also,” she continued, “there have been rumblings of late. Investors demanding to know when we’re going to start seeing a return on our investments. This merger… this rashness in general… doesn’t foster good faith. People want solid ground. Familiarity. And they won’t find any of that here.”I kept quiet for a while as she looked at her plate and started to cut into it as she ate it slowly.“You’re the only person who has any real influence with Alex as you’re his mother. I m

Leticia’s povThe tinted windows made the world outside look dim, like everything was a world away only separated by glass. My driver kept glancing up at me in the mirror, because I hadn’t said anything since we’d gotten into the car, or maybe because the news station that played on a loop through the small television at the back of my headrest was looping a segment over and over again. The reporter had been smiling too wide for what she was saying, her voice dripping in sugar but laced with poison. “In an unexpected turn of events, the engagement be—” I leaned forward and turned down her volume before she could finish.I didn’t want to hear more bad news. If I needed that, I would call my son and my husband. Those two were really filled with so much joy to work with. They could ruin my life with a bit of news. It didn’t need to be much.Suddenly I felt a buzz as I looked to my side and saw my phone ringing. It was a name on the display, and I shook my head before I hit the button to

Sophia’s povThe clinking of forks and the low hum of morning chatter was all around me in the hotel’s restaurant, but I could only see how stupidly the waiter loitered. “Go.” I shooed him with a sharp jerk of my hand.He moved on as though I’d spit on his ancestors or something.“Is something wrong with you?” My mother’s eyes didn’t budge from her omelette, her perfect brows arching the way they did when she smelled a scandal. She took a napkin and blotted her lips, not looking at me.“Tell me. What is going on?”I sighed and looked around as I shook my head. “I have no way of saying this. But let’s be honest, there is no way my boyfriend is going to marry a man. I refuse to believe that rubbish.”Her fork froze mid-air; then she let out this small puff of laughter, entertained by it all in a manner that made me want to throw my coffee at her.“To be honest, I was thinking onto we’re done,” she said as I stared at her in anger.“We are done,” I said as a couple heads turned from near

Alex’s povI could see she was not happy with the answer I gave, but who cares. If my life was to be destroyed it was mine and not hers. Her lips pressed together. “You should know that your choice is affecting more than you.”“You think I don’t know that?” I scoffed. “Dennis knows the whole intricacies of the company. If he wanted to destroy our company he could do it without blinking. He’s that smart. I want someone like that by my side.”She studied me for a long, heavy pause. "Need, or want?"I didn’t blink. “Both.”For the first time since I’d started, she seemed… confused. Probably because I wasn’t caving in to her words.I kept my stare steady and she said it flat out. “I’m not telling you to get rid of him because it makes the board happier or whatever the fuck they think. I’m only doing it so that you will be with someone you actually like. Please.”I stayed silent for a while as I slowly counted the minutes I’ve spent in this place.“Alex,” she said, softer now. “I’m not try
