Blue's POV
It was a week now after that incident, yet I couldn't stop thinking about Becca's last words to me. What was she talking about? Her sudden switch from being my best friend to something else was something I just couldn't comprehend no matter how much I thought about it. Sliding through the wall to the floor, I pulled my feet to my chin, the merry laughter of my prison mate from the other room filling my ear. Because of my previous status as the daughter in law of Victor Reece, I was given a private cell as I awaited my trial. According to him, that was the last thing he could do for me and he will never forgive me for killing his son’s best friend. “Breakfast is ready.” The warden said, pushing a tray into the room. “You should eat… you wouldn't want to embark on the journey of eternity with an empty stomach.” His words were followed by laughter from his colleagues. Ignoring their mocking words, I dug into my meal which I finished in a few minutes. Now pacing around the room with my hands crossed on my chest, I thought hard and long concerning the event of a week ago. Up until now, I have no idea how I found myself in Caruso's hotel, not to talk of being in a room with Archer where he was killed. “Caruso happens to be at the hotel that morning because of the caretaker’s distress call.” I mumbled. The reporters must have received a tip from the chef but Becca was more ready than the rest of them making it seem like she had firsthand knowledge before then. Her aggressiveness while questioning me left a strong impression in my head; it was as if we had fallout before then. “I told you, didn't I?” I quoted her words in my head, tilting my head to the side. “Are you still thinking about that scumbag?” Immediately, I swirled around only to see a lady dressed up in a prison uniform just like me. “Let's have a long talk before you are executed tomorrow.” She laughed, pushing a pin into the lock. Yanking the gate open, she said, “You can call me Feebee.” Unsure of what was going on, I reluctantly pulled my feet towards the gate and with just a few feet away, she pulled me out. “I hate slow people.” She huffed, pulling me to only God knows where. At the end of our walk, our destination turned out to be the common ground that was littered with people. “Are you surprised?” She laughed, giving my side a nudge. “There are tons working on the site at the moment.” Smacking her lips, she added, “Half of the country is filled with criminals, only a quarter is behind bars while the rest are allowed to roam freely.” This was the first time we met but she was relaxed and friendly. We don't know each other but she acts like we have known ourselves for a decade, making my skin crawl at the thought of it. “Why are you being nice to me?” I asked, unable to keep my curiosity to myself anymore. “I’m a nice person.” She cranked her head to the side. “That's not the reason.” I snarled. “I like you.” When I wouldn't release my grip on her wrist, she muttered, “We committed similar crimes.” She shrugged. Biting my lower lips, I wanted to yell at her for insinuating I was a murderer but that was only going to draw unnecessary attention which I wasn't prepared for. Pressing my lips into a thin line, I lowered myself on the huge piece of rock with my hands folded in front of me. “Are you going to allow the government to punish you for a crime you know nothing about?” She asked all of a sudden. Raising my brow, I tried to speak but she hushed me. “What do you think?” “Huh?” She was making me confused even more. “Prison break?” Stunned, I rose instantly. “Come on, no one would be able to escape from this facility; the security here is tight.” “I wished I would be able to escape though.” She sniffed. Offering her a napkin, I made her sit on the rock I was occupying, “You shouldn't cry.” I tried to comfort her but with each passing minute, the intensity of her cries doubled. “I don't regret killing them.” She grimaced. “If I had the chance to burn them to ashes, I would have done so.” All of a sudden, she burst into laughter, causing me to crease my brow. “Who the hell are you?” I snapped, grabbing the cuff of her uniform. Smirking, she pushed her hand into her pocket only to retrieve an ID card. She was the lawyer I have been dreading meeting. “You wouldn't grant me an audience; this is the only way I could think of.” She ratted out while I rolled my eyes in anger. “I don't want a lawyer.” I huffed and with anger running through my veins, I stomped towards the building. “But I want to help.” She yelled after me. “I'm going to make sure you get a lighter sentence if I don't succeed in proving your innocence.” She held my hand but I pulled away from her grip instantly. “Who sent you? Is it Caruso?” I asked with a voice barely above a whisper. The last time I saw Caruso was at the hotel. A day after I had been detained, the family lawyer came in with the divorce agreement with the spot meant for Caruso signed; left with no choice, I signed my part. “I’m a public defender. I just happened to be interested in your case.” She shrugged, a little smile spreading on her lips. “I have a motive for his murder.” I mumbled, “How are you going to fix that?” “Don't tell me you're succumbing to the story Becca Warren released last week.” Fueled with anger, I stormed off, unwilling to hear whatever she wanted to say. The next morning came quicker than I had expected. Solemnly, I made my way towards the bus with other prisoners who also had trials. “I wouldn't be returning here.” I muttered, wiping my eyes with the back of my palm as I reminisced of how miserable my life had always been. Abandoned by my parents, I was raised and lived the first twenty years in a foster home until Caruso came along. My savior as I had referred to him wasn't mine after all. “Here they come.” The clamoring outside the bus brought me back to consciousness; I just realized we had arrived at the courthouse. Once again, Becca was there, wielding her microphone.Caruso’s POVThroughout the party, I couldn't stop looking at her. The only difference between her and Blue was their facial features. Several times, I was tempted to walk up to her and find out where she had been all this while but I didn't have the courage to do so.First, Max, the man from earlier, was hovering around her protectively. Secondly, I had no idea how she was going to react to my question. At the end of the party, after bidding everyone and the host farewell, I walked up to my car. I was so absentminded that I forgot about Becca, not until she yelled my name, asking me to wait for her. “Were you going to leave me behind?" She asked.“I'm sorry." I mumbled, turning on the ignition. When she didn't speak again, I was grateful. Right now, all I wanted was peace and quietness. But it didn't last long.Shoving her phone into her purse, she turned to face me. She studied my face for a while before placing her hand on my shoulder, caressing it.“Tell me about it." She st
Blue’s POV“Are you okay?" Father asked, halting next to me as the low hum of classical music floated across the night air.“Yeah, I am." I nodded vigorously, forcing a smile that barely got to my eyes. But inside, my heart was thudding against my ribcage like a trapped animal.Taking a deep breath, I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “Get a grip on yourself, you can do this." I mumbled, rubbing my sweaty palm against my gown. I had practiced facing Caruso a thousand times in the mirror since I learnt he was going to be at the party but none of it could prepare me for the moment when his tall, familiar frame emerged from the crowd, his eyes sweeping across the guests until they landed on me.The flicker of recognition in his eyes made my stomach knot.Right now, I couldn't decide if the recognition was from the past or the scene at the mall earlier."Mr. Milton!" my father called out with a warm smile, stepping forward with his hand extended.“Mr. Smith.” Caruso took his hand
Blue’s POVI wasn’t expecting to see him, not there, and definitely not like that.Caruso Milton, the man whom I swore I was going to stay by his side forever. As soon as I saw him standing in the middle of Monaco Hall, soaked with my coffee and with an expression somewhere between recognition and disbelief, a thousand warning bells exploded in my head. My breath hitched, as my fingers trembled around the paper cup but I held on.I was just an hour away from being formally introduced as the new chairwoman of Nexus Corporation. And the Caruso decided to show his face. It would have been better if it was only him but Becca was standing right next to him. They are going to tell the whole world that I'm a murderer.Panic surged through me, threatening to strangle every breath I took. But then I remembered. My face. — The face I now wore in place of my own.The new jawline, the sharper nose, the cheekbones sculpted by someone else’s grief. I wasn’t Blue Lexington anymore, I was a strang
Caruso’s POVPushing my chair backwards, I arranged my cufflink as I ran my eyes through the last line on the screen of my laptop. This morning, I made sure I dropped by the office at exactly seven am which was one hour earlier than usual. By noon, I was stepping out for a function. The CEO of Nexus Corporation had handed me an invitation card in person for the handover ceremony which was going to happen by noon today and so I couldn't afford to miss it. “I will have to return…” "Aren't you done yet?” Becca asked, poking her head through the door.Flashing me a brief smile, she cleared her throat and with well calculated steps, she waddled her way into my office."Your cologne, you’re still not going to tell me where you got it from?”"I don't want a gift from you,” I said, biting back my irritation. Becca was a thorn in my flesh. She knew this but she still chose to ignore it.After the unfortunate incident, she had always been by my side. Several times, I tried to push her away
Blue’s POV“Have a nice day." I said, shaking hands with all of the directors present until I got to the last. “You too." They replied. As the next chairwomen of Nexus Corporation, my father has suggested I meet with the directors before the formal introduction which was going to be held by the weekend. “We are going to help you in every little way we can." Mr. Langston said and with a smile on my lips, I nodded in appreciation. One after the other, they took their leave until I was the only one left in my office. Reclining against my table, I used my fingers to trace the corners of my name plaque, my smile growing even wider. Nine months ago, I was the wife of Caruso Milton. Fast forward to nine months later, I was the heiress of Nexus Corporation, one out of the three largest cologmerate in the country. Pushing my hair behind my ear, I plopped on my chair, a low sigh escaping from my lips as I turned on the TV. The headlines caught my attention, so I decided to keep watchin
Blue's POVWhat I had expected was, the trial was going to go on forever but to my surprise, it didn't last up to half an hour. Now, that wasn't the interesting part. Feebee kept to her promise and I was released on a bail. Surprised with the outcome of the trial, I couldn't move my feet even after the court session had been declared over. The previous night, I had already said my last prayer to my maker for a safe sojourn into the world beyond but, that wasn't going to happen anymore. At this point, I had no idea if I should be happy or sad. “I told you, I'm going to make sure you're released.” Feebeee’s voiced out, announcing her presence in the process and at once I grabbed her hand. With tears rolling down my cheeks, I tried to speak but my tongue was heavy so I couldn't move the organ. “How am I going to repay you?” I asked when I finally found my tongue. “I don't even know you yet you…” “You were accused wrongly; you don't deserve to be locked behind bars.” She shrugged.
