As she took another scoop of food on her lips, she suddenly felt the eyes of her father. She lifted her head to stare at him before her gaze switched to the man by his side.
"On the other hand, I can just ask the driver to drive me to the company." She turns her head back to her father. "Dad, I don't need to come with Shawn. We can just meet there at the office," I retorted after a long while.
It was a good thing that she realized that she could actually say the words she wanted to say despite the doubts and fear forming onto the back of my head.
Who knows if he might get infuriated by her refusal.
"Are you sure?"
Ericka felt relieved when she noticed the reaction on her father's face. It was a good thing that it didn't bother him that she chose to refuse the offer of hitching a ride with that bastard. For one thing, it could be awkward for the two of them, and two, she just finds him weirdly annoying to a point that she'd like to avoid him no matter what.
A smile flashes through her lips before finally answering her dad.
"Yes, don't worry about me," she reassured. "I'm not going to run away or anything," she added which immediately brought a frown through the old man's face.
Wait, what is that reaction for? Did she say something wrong?
She immediately felt her heart racing as she noticed the reaction on her father's face. It seems like he is disappointed or something that makes her feel uneasy.
"Dear, I didn't mean to sound like I wanted Shawn to guard you 'til you get to the company. I trust you a lot," her father corrected, which brought surprise on her face. "In fact, if you want to use your own car or order the latest models of vehicle you want, you can always put the bill on me," he added, which made her surprised yet again.
"No need to buy a new car, Dad. I can just use my old car," she replied immediately, refusing the kind offer. It was just shocking and sudden that she couldn't help but shake her head.
Just as they were talking among themselves, the chair suddenly screeches from the other side of the room and Shawn stands up from the table, his hand on top of the table as he pushes the chair back to its place.
"See you at the company," Shawn then said to which her father responded.
"You're already done?" the old man said to the man. He turned his gaze towards him and nonchalantly nodded his head.
"Yes, Uncle. I'll get going," he added, fixing the attire he was wearing.
"Take care, Shawn and drive safely," her father said and with that, the man nodded his head as he left the words, "I will, Uncle."
Before he finally exits the dining area, his eyes manage to turn around to look at her one last time and immediately, once their eyes meet, she glared at him and roughly gazed somewhere else, ignoring him.
"Ericka, what happened?" Once the man left the room, the door closing, her attention switched back to her father with a worried look on his face. Just staring at those eyes that seem so caring makes her heart melt immediately.
"What do you mean, Dad?" she replied dumbfoundedly. She has no idea what her father is referring to.
"I'm talking about you and Shawn, my child. Why do I feel like you hate Shawn? Is there something wrong? Do you want to tell me anything, dear?" he asked one after the other, which made her eyebrows twitch.
It was unknown to her why her father is concerned of her relationship with Shawn but she made sure not to ask anymore.
She exiled a sigh before she talked. "It's nothing, please just ignore it," she said then took a glass of water near her food.
"I'm not in the mood to talk about him," she added before drinking. This conversation was making her thirsty for some reason.
The old man only shrugged his shoulders as an answer and continued eating his food on the table. As he scoops the food towards his mouth, the sound of utensils clatters through the four corners of the room.
After a short while, she couldn't help but break the silence looming around the place.
“Dad, are you not going to the company?” she asked, lifting her head a little to look at him.
He stopped himself from eating and then turned towards his direction to her before he replied.
"No dear, it's been a few months now. I can just work from home," he explained. "Besides, my secretary can just come here if he ever needs me to sign anything related to the company," he added. "Lastly, you will take over my position someday so letting the employees see you often will help you engage with them."
Ericka's eyes widened from the words her father said.
"Are you serious, Dad?" she said, still unable to believe what she was hearing. "Isn't it too much that I have no prior experience at all? I might just take the company to its doom if I take over it!" she retorted, disagreeing with her father's words.
She just couldn't help it. What if she makes a mistake that will cause the company a big strike? It might make her father unhappy and most of the employees unable to work. She could make the company loaded with debt with her inexperience.
"Don't worry, my child. Shawn is there to help you." Hearing those words didn't reassure her at all. For one, she despises the man all the way to her guts and two, why does it always have to be him?
She couldn't help but clasped the utensils in her hand.
"Why is it always that man?" She wanted to blurt out those words but she managed to keep it all to herself.
Biting her lips and unable to refuse her father's words, she just nodded her head as a response. She doesn't want to stress her father too much just because of what she wanted to ask.
Once she had her coffee after a long while, she took the last sip of the drink and got up from the table. It was now time for her to leave.
Just as she lifts her head to turn around and face her father, she notices him staring right at her. "Alright, I have to get going, Dad," she said and then walked straight to his direction. She gives him a peck on the forehead before a gaping smile flashes through his lips.
"Take care my dear and drive safely," the man whispered.
Ericka only nodded her head. "Yes, Dad, I will." And with that, she was finally walking when she heard her father's voice.
"Go get your car key to your Nanny Maria," he said that made her turn around curiously.
She turned around, her forehead knitted into a thin line. Why would someone else hold her car keys?
"Why is Nanny Maria holding onto my car key?" She couldn't help but let her curiosity eat her as it was a personal belonging of her.“Jenna wanted to use it earlier but Maria didn’t let her take a hold of it. Arnold just wanted to test it every time it needed to be under maintenance or to change oil,” her father explained, which brought a smile across her lips. She couldn’t help but smile due to the action of her nanny. She was obviously a loyal and trustworthy person.“Alright, see you, Dad,” she finally said and then turned away to continue walking. Before exiting the main door, she made sure to visit the servants quarters outside of the mansion, only to see her Nanny Maria, sitting outside.“Jenna wants to use it and Maria doesn't want her to use your car, it's just to be tested by Arnold every ti
Once Ericka and Nimfa's conversation ended, she finally turned her gaze towards the steering wheel and maneuvered the car back to the road. She steps on the accelerator of the vehicle then drives away from the vacant lot.Within a few minutes of a car ride, she finally reached buildings as high as the skyscrapers and immediately stopped at an elegant establishment standing at the very center of the city.Just as she greeted the guards and had one person drive her car towards the parking area, she walks directly to the hallway of the company and lifted her wrist to stare at her watch. It was exactly eight o'clock in the morning when the employees were staring right at her. Most of them had a surprised look written on their face, unknowing that she is the next heir to the company.Blinking at the sight of the people, she makes sure that in each and every movement she's doing, sh
Once, the door finally opens at the 41th floor, she was just about to walk when Mr. Gaston introduced the woman to her."Ms. Ericka, I would like you to meet Cynthia. She is going to be your personal secretary, as your father instructed me."Ericka didn't bother to listen about the name of the person and only stared right at the man with a dark expression on her face. To Gaston, it seems like he couldn't read what was going through her mind before she spoke. It seems like something had happened before he arrived earlier that made her act cold towards the young lady. And whatever it is, it seems like Ericka is displeased with the behavior of the woman."Hire me a new personal secretary," Ericka quickly blurted out and walked down the long hallway of the 41th floor. She didn't bother to even stare at the woman who have yet to regain herself from the embarassment from earlier.
A bitter smile was crossing his lips as he slowly opened his mouth to speak. "You are still such a sweet girl, my child," the old man started."When you suddenly disappeared, your father…" His eyes slowly turned sad as he looked directly into her eyes. "He had been stressing himself with working, unable to accept what had happened to you and your relationship with him. He chained himself with workload until he ended up sick in bed."Her heart sank at the words Mr. Gaston said. She couldn't believe that her father had been suffering all along because of her. Guilt started to creep up to her system, unable to bear what she heard. She bites her lip for a second and with a stunned look, speaks the words, "What do you mean?""My child, your father had been dying inside as though you were his world that slowly disappeared from his sight," he explained. "He only comes home to
Shawn immediately started with the orientation, introducing her to the whole group as people continued to eye her with a lot of things in mind. Not long after, the whole spacious room was filled with applause as Ericka appreciated it with a smile, a nod and a thank you.She takes her time to stand up and show everyone a timid smile before she turns her gaze towards Grey."Thank you, Mr. Grey, I appreciate the warm welcome," she said, an emphasis for the word 'warm welcome' tone was added. Afterwards, she then turned to look at everyone again, her eyes wandering towards the faces of the people."Thank you everyone. I'm glad that I'll be able to get to work with you all. I'm just hoping that our company will succeed."The place was yet again filled with applause before the real meeting started.Immediately, the whol
"Are you sure, Mommy?" The child's voice couldn't help but let out a cheerful tone. It seems like the mere mention of her going to visit excites her daughter the most. Ericka couldn't help but imagine the sweet smile flashing through Rica's lips as she let out a giggle."Mommy, I want to have chocolate milk and fried chicken for dinner," the child continued. Just hearing her sweet voice gives her all the delight she could ever feel. The only thing that matters to her the most is none other than her baby and she had been yearning to see her everyday.Just as she was happy to hear her child's voice, the same knock on the door continued to which she was interrupted. She turned her gaze towards the exit only to have her eyebrows furrowed for a moment. After a while, she let out a sigh before she gazed back at her phone. "Baby, I just need to do something real quick. I'll call you back," she s
Shawn only let out a bitter smile before speaking. "Well, if that's the case then I'm sorry if you ever missed knowing more about me. Have you forgotten the years we've spent together?" he said that made her dumbfounded. "And unlike you, I still remember most things about you… even your secret that you don't want others to know, especially your father."The way the man showed a mischievous smile flashing through his lips sent her a shiver down her spine. She couldn't help but overthink to herself about what he might have found out about her.Is he talking about her daughter? She had been doing her best to keep her away and yet…Even before she could regain her thoughts, the man finally turned away from her.She stared long and hard at his disappearing stature when he suddenly turned around."I'
“How's my daughter, Doc?” Ericka asked the doctor as soon as they reached his office. They happen to leave her daughter's room knowing full well that the doctor has something important to tell her.“I just wanted to remind you that we badly needed the bone marrow transplant in your daughter,” the doctor said that made her feel weak upon hearing it. She knew that her daughter's condition was getting worse. She slowly lowered her head into the floor, almost wanting to cry when suddenly, the man continued his words. "But there's good news you need to hear," the man said and immediately enough, she lifted her head, her heart pacing fast as though she couldn't help but anticipate what he was going to say."W-What do you mean, Doc?" she asked, stuttering. She couldn't help but stumble upon her words knowing full well that he was about to say something important, something that could help and save her dear daughter.&nb
