Chapter 3

작가: Sweet Beet
Sebastian’s firm tone instantly brought the atmosphere to a freezing point.

In the past, Morgan would have stepped in to smooth things over, even if it meant taking the short end of the stick.

But now, she simply stood there, watching coldly.

Grace had only one son, and in the end, she had no choice but to back down.

She even made her grandson apologize to Morgan.

At the dinner table, Grace kept piling food onto Sebastian’s plate. "Sebastian, you’ve lost weight again. Eat more."

Then she shot a glare at Morgan.

"They say a good wife should look presentable in public while being capable in the kitchen. Since you clearly lack the first, the least you could do is keep your husband happy with your cooking."

Morgan swallowed her food mechanically, tasting nothing.

"We recently hired a new housemaid. She’s a great cook, and Sebastian enjoys her food."

Grace scoffed. "A housemaid is just a housemaid—she’s not Mrs. Cole. As his wife, you should be the one taking care of these things."

Morgan didn’t reply, just smiled faintly.

Maybe she wouldn’t be Mrs. Cole for much longer anyway.

Sebastian cut in, his voice firm. "Mom, enough. Can we just eat in peace?"

Grace instantly deflated. "Fine, fine. No more talking—let’s eat."

The table finally fell into silence, but Sebastian’s phone kept buzzing.

From the corner of her eye, Morgan caught a glimpse of the message from Luna.

“Mr. Cole, I have a fever. I heard women get even hotter inside when they’re burning up. Want to come test it out?”

Luna attached a private photo of herself in barely-there lingerie.

Sebastian’s face darkened as blood rushed to his head.

He slammed his phone shut, the movement so abrupt that even Grace noticed something was off.

"Sebastian, what’s wrong?" she asked, concerned.

Sebastian quickly stood up. "Mom, something urgent came up at work. I need to take care of it."

Then he turned to Morgan. "Morgan, I might be back late tonight. Go to bed without me."

Without waiting for her response, he hurried out the door.

The moment he left, Morgan lost any desire to stay and endure more of Grace’s attitude.

She stood up, ready to leave as well.

Grace slammed her hand on the table, finally unleashing all the pent-up anger from the night.

"I’m still sitting here, and you’re already leaving? Do you have no manners at all?"

Her voice turned sharp. "Mrs. Cook, Ms. Wood, lock her in the attic! Let’s see if that teaches her some discipline!"

Morgan’s expression turned cold.

"You have no right to lock me up. This is illegal detention."

Grace let out a mocking laugh. "What a joke. A mother-in-law disciplining her daughter-in-law is perfectly justified."

Before Morgan could resist, the two older housemaids grabbed her and dragged her upstairs, shoving her into the dark attic.

Her heartbeat pounded wildly.

Tremors ran through her body.

She had claustrophobia.

The suffocating fear of death wrapped around her like a vice.

The pitch-black room felt like it was hiding monsters, waiting to devour her.

She banged on the door, shouting Sebastian’s name.

In high school, her classmates once locked her in a storage room as a prank.

She had been just as terrified back then.

Sebastian was the one to kick the door open.

Light had poured into the room with him, chasing away the darkness, and for the first time, she felt safe.

From that moment on, she saw him as her salvation.

She loved him, willingly giving up everything for him, even her own life.

But now, no matter how much she screamed, Sebastian never came.

Instead, a basin of ice-cold water was dumped over her.

Mary Wood stood over her, glaring. "Mrs. Cole, you’d better quiet down. If you keep making a fuss, don’t blame us for getting rough."

Soaked to the bone, Morgan was left locked in the attic all night.

It wasn’t until the next morning that the door finally swung open.

Sebastian rushed inside, gathering her shivering body into his arms. "Morgan, I’m sorry. I came back too late…"

The embrace she once considered her salvation now only suffocated her.

She shoved him away and walked toward the door.

The moment she stepped outside, her vision blurred, and everything went black.

But would Sebastian really let her leave? After that conversation they had, Grace stopped speaking coldly to Morgan. In fact, there was even a hint of warmth in her tone now. Sebastian’s recovery had also gone well. Within half a month, he was already able to get out of bed and walk. At first, Morgan visited him at the hospital frequently, but as time went on, she only went every few days. Soon, the one-month deadline arrived, and Sebastian was close to full recovery. Morgan booked a flight to Haputa for the next day. That evening, Sebastian arrived at her home with bags of groceries, a bitter smile on his face. “Morgan, I’m here to send you off with a meal.” That was what he said, but deep down, he was hoping this dinner would make her stay. For the past month, he tried everything to win her back, yet nothing had worked. This was his last chance. Morgan could see his intentions but didn’t stop him. A year ago, they didn’t finish the farewell dinner she prepared

Morgan was completely caught off guard by the sudden confession, momentarily at a loss for words."I… you…"Robert’s voice remained calm. "You don’t have to answer me now, and I’m not trying to pressure you. I just think confessions should be made in person, not through someone else."If you come back after a month, then tell me your answer, okay?""...Okay.""Good. Until then, let’s just stay as friends."After hanging up, Morgan got out of bed and freshened up.Not long after, she heard Grace’s sharp voice outside the room. The moment she arrived, Grace doted on her son endlessly, fussing over him as if he were on his deathbed. And when she learned Sebastian spent the entire night in pain without proper rest, she flew into a rage, threatening to raise hell with the doctors and nurses.Sebastian quickly intervened, stopping her before she caused a scene. The moment Grace noticed Morgan stepping out of the adjoining room, her expression soured."You slept peacefully while Sebastian was

"Why not? You’re both single—sounds like a perfect match to me! And if you become my sister-in-law, there won’t be any family drama between us. “Plus, I’ll finally have an ally against my mom. It’s a win-win situation!"Sally was getting more excited by the second, practically wishing the two could get married on the spot.Morgan sighed. "Sally, stop joking around. There’s no way your brother would ever be interested in me."Robert had never dated anyone, but with his background, he could have any woman he wanted. There was no reason for him to be interested in someone like her—a divorced woman who was once disfigured. But Sally’s next words left her completely stunned."What do you mean, no way? My brother likes you!"Morgan blinked. "What did you just say?"Had she misheard?Since she had already started, Sally decided to spill everything. "It’s true! He keeps pictures of you saved on his phone—I saw them myself."I even told him to confess before you left, but he kept stalling, sa

Morgan’s voice remained calm as she continued, "I once saved your life, and now you’ve saved mine. Sebastian, we owe each other nothing."Sebastian shook his head. "No, Morgan, I’ll never be able to repay what I owe you, not in this lifetime. Please… let me stay by your side, even if only to make amends.""But I don’t need your atonement, Sebastian."I’m doing fine now. My scars are gone. I’ve been happy in Haputa, surrounded by friends. If you force yourself to stay in my life, you’ll only bring me pain."Sebastian opened his mouth but hesitated. He knew letting go was the right thing to do—the only thing he should do.He felt like he was being torn apart at the thought of losing her forever and never being able to hold her again. After a long pause, he finally spoke. "One month. Just stay for one month. After that… if you still want to leave, I’ll personally see you off."Morgan looked at the man lying weak and battered in the hospital bed.In the end, she nodded.…That night, Sall

"Miss Hayes, can you come to the hospital? Sebastian just woke up. He wants to see you.""I’ll be there soon."Morgan immediately got in a car and rushed back. By the time she arrived, it was already late into the night. The moment Grace saw her, she scowled. "Do you have any idea what time it is? You ungrateful wretch. Did you deliberately drag your feet just to make us wait?"Morgan had been traveling nonstop and was already on edge. She had no patience left for Grace’s attitude."Mrs. Cole, I don’t owe you or your family anything. If you can’t adjust your tone, then I see no reason to stay."Grace shot back, "You don’t owe us? Sebastian ended up like this because he saved you!"Morgan turned to her, her gaze sharp. "And do you know who was behind the wheel?"Grace snapped, "I don’t care who it was! Whoever hurt my son won’t get away with it!""It was the maid he cheated on me with a year ago," Morgan said flatly. "So, tell me, why did this happen? Because of the mess Sebastian c

Morgan caught Grace’s wrist mid-air and forcefully shoved it aside. "I tolerated you out of respect because you were my elder. But now, we have nothing to do with each other. Don’t think you can throw your weight around like you’re still my mother-in-law." Grace’s face turned pale with fury. "Morgan Hayes, you heartless woman! My son nearly died saving you, and all you can think about is cutting ties with him? How can you be so heartless?" "He saved me because he wanted to. Whether he survives or not is up to fate." Morgan locked eyes with her. "That line sounds familiar, doesn’t it?" Back when she nearly died saving Sebastian, lying unconscious in the ICU, Grace said the exact same thing to Sebastian. Grace trembled with rage. "Fine, I said it. But Sebastian was always sincere with you! He married you despite all the backlash and disfigurement. He treated you like a queen!"He made a mistake that all men make! And what did you do? Disappear on him for a year, leaving him
