ROSE
I could already hear chatters and giggles as I defended the status slowly. I bit the inside of my lips and my hands trembled slightly. I'm not ready to meet them. I don't think I'd ever be ready to meet them. The Rivera’s? Save me lord. I stopped on my tracks when I saw Derek. He looked at me with a smile on his face and I badly wanted to punch it off. He looked back and I knew instantly that he wanted to announce my presence. “Please don't.” I mouthed but he looked away like I hadn't said anything. “Okay everyone,” he cleared his throat and stretched out his arms for me to hold. I shut my eyes close, hoping the ground would swallow me whole. “Meet my wife and new bride. Rose Rivera.” He announced and I took his hand and descended the stairs. I made sure he saw the disgust on my face. No one said anything when I came down. Everyone was seated at the dining table and looking at me like I was shit. Or probably someone they don't want to see. “Hi,” my voice was shaky as I looked at them. There were two women present. They both looked so young like they were in their thirties. But I could tell they were in their late forties or early fifties. Another lady was seated too, she looked a little bit younger than I am, if not my age. And a man was present too. He looks like… Derek. Oh, I get it now. “How long would you keep staring at us?” The lady who was seated in the same row and the man and woman asked and I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. “Come…” Derek urged with a calm voice making me wonder if he's the same cold man I met a few days ago. “Good day everyone.” I greeted them when I got to the dining room but no one responded to me. They all looked away. I stared at Derek helplessly wondering what I might be doing wrong. After a few seconds of silence, the other older lady who was seated in the same row as me and Derek spoke up. “You're welcome Rose.” She cleared her throat and looked up at me. I looked away immediately, regretting why I even raised my head in the first place. “Thanks.” My reply was almost a whisper. “I'm Derek's mom.” She added and my eyes shot up immediately and widened. No wonder the sternness. He sure got it from her. I didn't reply, I just nodded. I managed to look up and across the table, the young lady was staring daggers at me while the guy, Derek's brother obviously was on his phone and was paying attention to everything. The woman beside Derek's brother. She looked poised, distant and stunning. His mother maybe? It hit me. Two different mothers but the same father. That explained a lot more than I wanted to admit. "Why is everyone acting weird?" Derek asked, breaking the silence. His voice wasn’t loud, but it felt heavy. Strong enough to make the air in the room thicker. No one answered. No one even looked at him. His mom just kept eating like nothing was happening. Then Derek turned to the guy with the phone. The one that looked like him. "Oscar," Derek called. "Do the needful." That’s when I noticed it. The way they looked at each other. It wasn’t just a regular stare. It was cold. Sharp. Like there was something deep between them. Something not good. Damn! These people don't like each other. Not at all. This might sound rude but this family is hella weird. You see? Not all rich families have it all. In fact, wealth isn't all that. Oscar stood up slowly. A small, fake smile appeared on his face as he turned to me. "Well," he said, dragging the word. "Welcome to the Rivera family. I’m Oscar, Derek’s younger brother." He stretched his hand out and I shook it, but it felt like he didn’t want me to touch him for long. He pulled away quickly. "And this," he pointed at the woman beside him, "is my mom, Lauren." She didn’t even bother to look up. Just gave a small nod like I wasn’t worth her time. "And this is Jennifer," Oscar added, waving toward the girl next to him. Jennifer. Her name sounded soft, but her face was not. Her eyes were sharp. Cold. She looked at me like I didn’t belong here. Like I was dirt on her shoes. "So," she said, tilting her head at me, "what’s your family like? Are you people rich?" I blinked. My mouth opened, but no words came out. Before I could answer, she added with a shrug, "It’s not easy to be part of the Rivera family, you know." My chest tightened. My stomach felt weird. I was about to say something, anything, when Derek spoke. "Oscar," he said, not even looking at Jennifer. "Tell your wife to behave." Oscar gave a small laugh, but didn’t say anything. Jennifer smiled and looked away like she didn’t just throw a knife at me with her words. Then Lauren finally dropped her fork, wiped her lips, and looked up. "Relax, Derek," she said like she was bored. "We just want to know more about your wife." That word again. Wife. It still felt strange. Heavy. Like it didn’t belong to me yet. Derek’s hand reached under the table and found mine. He gave it a small squeeze. It made me feel safe for a second. I swallowed and spoke softly. "I’m not from a rich family," I said. "But we’re doing okay." Jennifer raised an eyebrow like I had said something disgusting. Oscar gave a small smile. One of those fake ones. Derek sat up straight. His tone was firm. "That’s enough." And just like that, the table went quiet again. No one said a word. And I kept wondering if coming here was a big mistake.Rose's POV“Oh shit!” I muttered under my breath realizing that I might be in trouble.“Is this how you want to put this family in shame just a few days after joining us? We are already trending online?” Jennifer spoke with so much sarcasm.I couldn't respond to her. My whole attention was on Derek. He was looking at me, right into my soul and it made me quiver.I never want to see this side of him. It's scary. He looked so pissed. Why? I can't be the cause right? I hadn't done anything wrong. And what's with Jennifer saying the family is already trending online?Heaven help me.I hope the little misunderstanding I had outside wasn't posted online.“Rose, I expected so much better from you.” Avery, Derek mom stated and tapped Derek's arms before walking past me.“Well, I think—”“Jennifer please shut your mouth!” Oscar interrupted the moment Jennifer was about to talk and she just gulped. The disrespect towards his own wife is disgusting.“Everyone leave,” Derek said. His voice wasn’
ROSESomething doesn't just sit right but I couldn't figure out what it was.I sat down on the couch, my hands placed over my chest as I tried to catch my breath."Do you need water ma'am?" A voice came, very close to me and it startled me. I made a little jump from the sofa."Sorry I didn't mean to get you scared." The servant apologized. I looked at her only to see her with a glass of water.Do they really do this too?"I'll get water when I want to." My voice came harsher than I expected. I hadn't realize but my hands were jittering.Am I being stalked? But why?I know accepting this contract marriage from Derek was a big mistake but that was the only way to save my family.I really can't tell how I feel but I know for a fact that it's not a good feeling. Who would I call?My mom? Nope, I would only make her worry and I don't want that. The last thing I wanted was to tell Dreak about anything. I don't want him to be redone for my safety. But I know for a fact that I'm in grave d
ROSEI had this urge to show Derek the text but I decided against it. Telling him didn’t make any sense to me , not when I couldn't even explain why it made my stomach twist like that. When I woke up the next morning, Derek wasn’t in the room. It occurred to me that he may have left for work. The house was too quiet.I sat there for a while, hugging my knees, staring at the spot where he had slept. My phone was still on the nightstand. I reached for it, unlocked it, and stared at the same message from last night.“You don't know what you’ve done.”Though I wondered who might have sent it, I didn’t reply and I didn't delete it either. I just… kept staring at it until the screen went black again.“What am I supposed to have done?” I muttered under my breath.Who do I think I’m talking to? The walls obviously can’t give me an answer. I forced myself up, deciding I won't spend the whole morning being paranoid. I’d make breakfast for myself, shower and maybe go out later.Just… anything t
OSCAR“She’s so full of herself, Oscar. Did you see the way she spoke? Like she owns the house. Like she owns Derek. God, I can’t stand that girl. She’s rude. Classless. And what was that thing she said? ‘Maybe stop coming around’? Is she serious? You know what the problem is, Derek picked her off the streets and now she thinks she’s royalty.”Jennifer hadn’t stopped talking since we got in the car. From the front steps of Derek’s house, through the ride home, and now into our bedroom she was still going. Still ranting. Still talking like her voice was the solution to everything.“And that little smirk she gave when I bumped her shoulder? I saw it, Oscar. I saw it! She thinks she’s won. You should’ve said something to her. You just sat there like they didn’t just—”“Jennifer,” I said quietly, trying to hold on to the last thread of patience I had.But she didn’t hear it.“—humiliate us at the table. Her! Talking like she belongs at the table! That tone she used with Lauren? Avery di
ROSE“Don’t come near me.”I pulled the blanket up to my chest like it was a shield and stared at Derek from across the bed.He looked at me like I had just told him to sleep in the washing machine.“I wasn’t planning to,” he said, slipping his phone on the nightstand like he had better things to worry about than me.“Good,” I replied, dragging the pillow closer. “Because I mean it. If your toe crosses this invisible line…” I made a straight line in the air between us, “I will scream.”He didn’t even look my way. He was already lying down, one hand behind his head, eyes closed like he was bored of my entire existence.“Do you always talk this much before bed?” he mumbled.“Yes,” I snapped. “Especially when I’m forced to sleep beside a cold, rude, abs-showing, zero-emotions type of man.”“Great,” he muttered, still not opening his eyes. “Then maybe if you keep talking, I’ll fall asleep faster.”I scoffed and turned the other way. “Jerk.”“Loudmouth.”The silence that followed was thick
DEREK“Seriously, do you fall for me every time you walk into a room?”I looked down at her, still holding her waist like she was glass I caught before it shattered. Her eyes were wide, big and round like I’d just caught her stealing from my pocket.“You—you didn’t have to catch me,” she muttered, pushing weakly against my chest.“Oh yeah? You wanted to land flat on your face?” I raised a brow, not moving an inch. “Be my guest next time.”“No! I just…” She slipped from my hold and fixed her wrinkled top like she just got into a wrestling match. “I’m not clumsy. That thing was in my way.”“That thing?” I looked down at the slipper, lying there like it minded its business. “You tripped over a slipper, Rose.”She narrowed her eyes. “Don’t start, Derek.”I started anyway.“Oh, now you want to talk? Weren’t you the same girl who couldn’t open her mouth at dinner? Like someone clicked ‘mute’ on you?”She walked past me into the room, arms folded like she had a case to defend. “I wasn’t mute
