The water was shut off—and I knew exactly why. "I'm sorry. I wish there was more I could do for you." Karen, the brown-haired receptionist, said. "There has to be a mistake. I sent my dad to pay the bill. I am never late on bills. You know this, Karen." I responded hurriedly, not understanding how the water had been shut off for the month. "I know, honey. I'm very sorry. Your dad said he was going to bring it by?" She asked. "Yes. So much for assuming he could accomplish this one thing for me." I laughed, despite there being zero comedy behind it. I handed Karen the money I had left from this week's payday. Hopefully, this will be enough to have the water turned back on for the month. "You will get through all of this, I promise," she assures me. I offer her a forced grin and depart fast. Despite the strong connection that Karen and I have, she lacks a thorough knowledge of what truly goes on in my regular life. She will only see what I allow her to see. She sees me in here quite often, because I'm the only one who is responsible enough to pay the bills. This is the same thing over and over again. I'm weary of this. I'm weary of supporting my family merely because my dad can't hold a job. Ever since Mom went away, I have been responsible for caring for the entire family. I love my family. I adore my sister, and I treat her like she is my kid. Half of the time, it feels like she is. I simply want to feel like a regular 20-year-old too. I phone my father's number and eagerly wait for him to respond. "Hello?" he asked. "Dad, I just got back from the city, and Karen tells me that you never went in to pay the water bill?" I do my best to be cool, but it isn't working. "Oh yeah, I'm very sorry about that, Anna. I'll pay you back for it." He mumbles. "Where the fuck did the money go, Dad? That was $120," I shouted. Tears begin to collect in my eyes, and I have to struggle to prevent them from flowing out. "I took it to the casino," he admits. Of course. And the Dad Of The Year honor goes to... "What the hell is your issue, Dad? Our water got switched off. You can't keep spending the money I give you for bills and just take it to the casino! Does this house signify nothing to you? Are you fucking kidding me?" I shout at him. I tried maintaining cool, but all of my self-control went down the toilet. I wish my life was normal. I wish I had the typical life of a twenty-year-old. But, no. I have to slave away and work my ass off to maintain my family while my dad takes all of my hard-earned money to the casino and tosses it away. I feel hot tears stream down my cheeks and hurriedly attempt to brush them away. The walk to my job is near downtown, and it only takes around five minutes to get there. Thank God. Crying absolutely will only make me seem worse if it starts to rain and I have to go to work with wet hair and wet clothes. When I come inside the modest cafe, I see Sara smiling brightly at me, but her countenance instantly crumbles when she sees my bloodshot eyes. "Oh my god, are you okay?" She asks with anxiety on her face. I attempt to hold it together, but it is practically impossible as I stand in front of my closest buddy. She promptly pulls me in for a hug. "What happened? Who do I have to kill?" She asks. Mother Sara doesn't play. I chuckle softly at her reply, "My dad is just so aggravating. He grabbed the money for our water bill and squandered it all in the casino. So I just had to pay another$120,and now I'm not going to have enough money for my textbooks. I simply don't see why he needs to go and do this type of thing all the time,"" I cry. "Hey, don't weep. I know, he truly sucks right now. It will be okay, though. I promise. I suppose my brother might have the identical textbook you are seeking that you can just have. Don't worry, okay? Everything will be OK. I promise." She assures me. It sounds so easy when she says it. I wish it were as easy as just 'notworrying.' God, I want to. I had to make myself appear decent before my shift started, and thank God Sara brought some makeup with her to disguise the black bags around my eyes.Anna POV "I think we need to get going. I'm sorry, we just have so much that we need to do and things we need to get before we get to the house. Plus, Phoebe hasn't had her nap yet, so she is going to get tired pretty soon," Ethan says, clapping his hands together."What? Right now? But we just got our food?" Daneisha says, completely shocked by Ethan wanting to leave."Yeah, I'm sorry, Aunt Dee. I just still have so much to get done. I appreciate this, though. I'll see you in a few hours anyway, right? I'm assuming you're staying in the house too." He says, flagging down the waiter and asking for a few to-go boxes, and handing him his card to run the tab. "Oh, please. Allow me. This was my idea, remember?" Daneisha says, handing the waiter her credit card. Ethan began to object, but she held her hand up and watched as the waiter walked away."Thank you, Aunt Dee," Ethan says, sitting back in his seat and packing up all of our food."It was my pleasure. I'll see you at the house. An
Anna POV "So, I told him that we were going to pack up and head to New York City! It's amazing in New York; you would love it. The city and the food...the people! Oh! The people are amazing! You wouldn't imagine how perfect it is there." Deneisha gushes."Yeah, I've been to New York once. It's pretty nice. Kind of...loud." Ethan says, taking a large drink of his glass of wine. The café and wine bar in this airport are fancy. Very fancy. I never understood the point of putting fancy restaurants in the middle of an airport. Well, I think I just learned the reason why. Deneisha was high-maintenance and very classy. She is beautiful. I can tell that Ethan is getting annoyed with her, but everything she is saying is sort of fascinating to me. I want to listen to what she has to say. I even want her to...like me? Maybe it's because I only believe this. After all, she won't even give me the time or day. The conversation that I'm included in is the bare minimum. She is nice to Phoebe, at lea
Anna POV "Ears pop?" Ethan laughs sleepily next to me."Yes. That was terrible. The worst pain I've felt in a long time," I said dramatically."Want a piece of gum?" he asks, pulling the pack out of his pocket."Does that work?" I ask, taking a strip out of the pack and popping it into my mouth."Probably not. But hey, it's the thought that counts." He laughs."Can I have a piece?" Phoebe asks him. He chuckles and hands her a piece, warning her to be careful not to get it in her hair.We see the plane begin to get lower and lower to the ground, and Phoebe begins to get anxious once again."It's fine. Just like a carnival ride, remember?" Ethan reminds her as we begin to descend to the ground. I grip Eth's hand tightly as the plane hits the ground, causing everything to jolt momentarily. Ethan continues to talk to Phoebe to keep her calm, but he pulls me a little bit closer to him too. Soon, our plane comes to a complete stop, and everyone stands up to gather their luggage from the
Anna POV The next few days are spent in a hectic rush to get everything packed and settled before we go on our trip. We have never been to Florida, so it was kind of difficult to understand what the weather would be like. Ethan claims that it is only pretty warm for three hours during the day and that it cools down during the night. But he also says that the ocean will be warm enough to swim in. Overall, it's a pretty confusing way to describe the place. I'm stuck on whether I should pack our warmer clothes or something short for the summer weather. I pack both just to stay safe."Are you all packed?" Ethan asks as he walks into our bedroom. Our bedroom. Yikes. I need to be careful about how comfortable I get. "Basically. Do I need to bring a jacket?" I ask, looking at the jean jacket and the North Face I have in my hand."Yes. Like I said, it's going to get pretty cool outside. You'll understand once we get there. It's nice, though. You'll love it. I promise." He assures me, pullin
Ethan POV"Okay, but I'm just as guilty as she is! I'm the one who had a girlfriend! I'm the one who cheated! She doesn't have any obligation like that. She is single." I add."Yeah, and now you are too. Look, cut Haley off because she is nothing but trouble. She fucked you over. Do I have to remin
Anna POVAs I began to wipe down the tables, I thought about what Pam said and how she might have a point. Ethan might have just had a moment of weakness. He was just too deep in his own emotions to think about what he was doing. I mean...he stopped her, didn't he? He stopped her because of me. He
Ethan POV"You don't have to be. He's in a better place. I promise." "Eth?" "Hmm?""I'm sorry for everything. I mean it this time. I'm so sorry." She cried. "It's okay, Hal," I assured her. I think I've said this fifty million times to her. But this time, I mean it. "Do you think if you hadn't
Anna POVWhen we got home, Ethan made the two of us some hot chocolate and we all watched some Christmas movies. It was only the beginning of November, but all of the Holiday movies were already starting to play. They seem to be starting earlier and earlier each year. I remember when my Mom was ali
