Vanessa

My hands were still shaking as Blade drove away from the Thompson mansion. The city lights blurred outside the window, and every time I blinked, I saw Mrs. Thompson’s terrified face again.

“Vanessa,” Blade said quietly, glancing at me through the rearview mirror, “you shouldn’t have gone in there alone.”

I let out a shaky breath. “I had to. She needed to see me. She needed to know what it feels like to lose control.”

He said nothing, but I could feel his eyes on me. Judging me, pitying me.

I turned my gaze out the window, watching the night slip by. “She destroyed everything, Blad. My marriage, my home. Even my name. And he... ” I bit my lip hard, tasting blood. “He froze my accounts. Every damn one of them. Do you know what that means?”

Blade stayed silent.

“It means he wants me broke, powerless and invisible.” I gave a bitter laugh. “But I’m not going anywhere. I’m still Vanessa. And he’s going to regret underestimating me.”
