I was finally feeling like myself again. The surgery seemed like it had happened a lifetime ago, even though it had only been a few weeks. My side didn't hurt anymore, and the doctor said I was healing perfectly.

Mom had taken me for my follow-up appointment that morning, and Dr. Harrison said I could go back to all my normal activities, no more restrictions.

I was so happy because I could play soccer again, run around at recess, and do everything I used to do.

"I'm so proud of you," Mom said as we drove home. "You were so brave through all of this."

"I'm just glad Phil is okay," I said, looking out the window. "That's all that mattered."

I felt Mom's eyes on me. "Lucas, honey, can we talk about something?"

I knew what was coming. "If it's about Alex, I don't want to.. "

"Just hear me out, please." Mom pulled the car over and turned to face me. "I know you're angry at him. I know you feel like he abandoned us. But Lucas, what happened six years ago wasn't entirely his fault."
