I felt my knees buckle, and Nathaniel caught me before I fell.

"Can I see him?" I whispered.

"Not right now. But as soon as he's out of surgery and stable, we'll take you to him." She glanced at the children. "Would you like me to have someone sit with the kids while you wait?"

"No." Lucas grabbed my hand. "We want to stay with Mummy."

"We can all wait together," Nathaniel said firmly, guiding us to the chairs. "Come on, kids. Let's sit down."

We sat in those uncomfortable plastic chairs for what felt like hours, but was probably only forty-five minutes.

Lucas leaned against my side, exhausted and traumatized. Lily sat on my other side, holding my hand so tightly I lost feeling in my fingers. Nathaniel paced the hallway, making phone calls to coordinate everything.

Oh God. Someone needed to tell her that her son was in emergency surgery.
