A small smile crept across my lips as I remembered my sweet mother.

I leaned closer to the phone. “So, tell me, Phil… how is my sister? And… my mom?”

“They are fine,” he said softly, but then his tone shifted. “But something happened this evening.”

My heart instantly raced in my chest. A wave of panic washed over me. “What? What happened? Tell me.”

There was hesitation on his end, the kind that made my stomach twist.

“We went shopping… me, Lily, and Mother,” he finally said.

“Yes, and? What happened?” I asked, my voice rising, panic slipping through.

Phil was quiet for a moment before asking, “Lucas… have you ever met my father?”

I frowned. “Your father? Yes, I have met him before. During one of my Mother’s parties. But what does that have to do with what happened to my mom?”

Phil took a deep breath, then dropped the words that nearly knocked the air out of me. “We ran into my father at the mall today. He was shocked when he saw me and Lily with Mother."
