Zoey’s POV

The lock clicked into place, sealing the massive door. I backed away, pressing my spine against the cool wood, and let out a long, ragged exhale.

For about five seconds, a wave of profound relief washed over me. I was away from Kaiser's suffocating presence. I was away from Lily and her vicious mother. I was safe in this silent, luxurious room, completely isolated from the outside world.

Then, my brain finally kicked back into place, and the sheer stupidity of my reaction hit me like

Zoey’s POVNo. No, no, no.A wave of panic washed straight over me, my insides screaming at me.That was NOT how the story was supposed to go!Mai Lennox—the delicate, innocent, angel-like female lead of this novel—was standing right outside his office doors at this exact second! In the original script, the moment Kaiser Vance laid eyes on Mai, the universe was supposed to shift on its axis. He was supposed to be drawn to her pure light, fall into a slow-burn obsession with her, and leave me—the annoying, scheming villainess—to fade into the background so I could quietly plan my escape!Yet here he was, sitting behind his massive obsidian desk, looking straight through me as if Mai Lennox didn't even exist in his dimension.Wasn't he supposed to fall for her?! Why is the plot completely throwing itself off a cliff?!My jaw was slightly slack, my eyes wide as I stared at him in disbelief, my brain frantically trying to compute the wreckage of the novel's timeline.Kaiser’s steady eyes

Zoey’s POVI woke up before my alarm even had a chance to ring. For the first time in days, I didn't feel that suffocating weight resting on my chest the second my eyes fluttered open. I practically bounded out of the soft bed, humming ‘I Don’t Care’ by Ed Sheeran under my breath as I marched straight into the walk-in closet.“Cause I don’t care when I’m with my baby, yh.All the bad things disappear and you’re making me feel like maybe I am somebody, I can deal with the bad night. When I’m with my baby yh.Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh…” yes!!!Today was the day.I picked out a sharp work outfit—a tailored charcoal-grey blazer over a crisp ivory blouse, paired with high-waisted trousers and plain pointed pumps. I spent extra time doing my hair and makeup, making sure I looked every bit like a confident, high-powered assistant instead of a panicked hostage who had been held captive in a billionaire’s lair. Finally, I celebrated internally, applying a quick layer of lip gloss as I looked

Zoey’s POVLet’s just find a way out of this house first. That single thought kept ringing in my head, drowning out every single bit of chaotic curiosity I had about Kaiser Vance, his weird behavior, or whatever terrifying secrets he was keeping behind locked doors.Later that afternoon, I sat on the plush velvet sofa in the master suite's sitting area, resting my right arm on a cushion while Bella gently unraveled the white medical gauze from my palm. She was being absurdly careful, treating my hand as if it were made of delicate glass that might shatter at any second."Bella, you really don't have to go that slow," I said, a faint chuckle escaping my lips. "I told you, it doesn't hurt anymore.""Oh, but Miss Ryan, Mr. Vance instructed us to be extremely careful," Bella whispered nervously, her small hands trembling slightly as she lifted the final layer of bandage. "If I pull too fast and hurt your skin, Mr. Vance would have my head."I looked down at my palm. The red, blistered ski

Zoey’s POVThe soft duvet gave way beneath me as Kaiser gently set me down on the edge of the king-sized bed.I sat there frozen, my mind completely short-circuiting as I stared up at him in shock. What the hell is wrong with this man?!My brain was screaming at a hundred miles an hour, frantically trying to process the insanity of what had just happened downstairs. He had literally witnessed me deliberately "trip". He had clearly seen Lily’s bright red, slapped cheek and her ruined white dress. And yet, instead of tearing into me, instead of interrogating me, his very first concern had been whether I was okay! He had ignored Lily's screaming, kicked her off his estate without even asking for an explanation, and carried me up here like I was something fragile and precious to him!Suspicion curled tight and heavy in the pit of my stomach, turning my blood cold. This makes zero sense. Is he playing a new game? Is this some sick reverse-psychology tactic to make me drop my guard before h

Zoey’s POVThe muffled shouting echoing from the ground floor showed no signs of stopping.I sat up, stretched my arms, and rubbed the lingering sleep from my eyes. After the terrifying midnight confrontation in the dark kitchen with Kaiser, my nerves were fried, but hearing someone making an absolute racket downstairs at eight in the morning was the exact spark of irritation I needed to snap out of my anxious state.I swung my legs off the bed and walked over to the walk-in closet. I pulled on an oversized sweater. It swaddled me completely, covering my neck all the way down to my mid-thighs.Skipping shoes entirely, I unlocked the bedroom door and walked barefoot down the hallway, following the grating sound of a woman’s shrill voice. As I reached the top of the staircase and looked down into the main living room, my jaw nearly hit the marble floor.Lily was sitting cross-legged on one of Kaiser’s pristine armchairs, barking orders at the estate staff as if she were the rightful lad

Zoey’s POVI woke up in the pitch-black darkness of my room, my throat feeling as parched and dry as a desert.I groaned softly, reaching out with a hand toward the nightstand to grab the bottle of water the staff usually left for me. My fingers swept across the cold, smooth wood. Nothing.Empty.I sat up, dragging a hand down my face in frustration. My stomach gave an uncomfortable, hollow twist, reminding me that I had skipped dinner entirely after locking myself in earlier."Great. Just great," I muttered under my breath.Unable to ignore the burning thirst and gnawing hunger, I swung my legs lazily over the side of the bed. I stumbled forward through the dark room, half-asleep, heading straight for the bedroom door.Thump!"Ow! Dammit!" I cursed loudly, recoiling as my shin slammed right into the chair I had wedged under the door handle earlier. The sharp pain instantly jolted me wide awake. I rubbed my aching leg, still cursing. I dragged the heavy chair out of the way, unlocked
