The shrill sound of her phone pulled Kathalina out of a restless sleep. At first, she only groaned, burying herself deeper into the soft sheets as if she could muffle the insistent ringing. Her hand fumbled blindly across the nightstand, knocking over a pen and nearly tipping her glass of water before she finally wrapped her fingers around the phone.

She squinted at the bright screen, her sleepy eyes struggling to focus. But when the name flashing across it came into view, her heart gave a startled jolt.

Attorney Jun Sotto.

Kathalina sat up straight, her blanket slipping from her shoulders. For a moment, she couldn’t quite place where she was the unfamiliar cream-painted walls, the faint hum of the air conditioner, the scent of crisp linen sheets that didn’t belong to her apartment. Then it hit her. She wasn’t home. She was still in the hotel she had checked into last night after her late arrival in the city.

Panic shot through her veins. She had forgotten completely.
