Chapter 234

Author: Eli Sole
Outside the hospital entrance, a crowd of reporters had already been blocked off by security, but that didn’t stop them from raising their cameras, focusing on the tense standoff between Chris and Carter.

Carter stood with his arms crossed, looking at Chris with nothing but disdain. “Are you Xander people ever going to be done? You’re the ones who publicly cut ties with my sister and now you have the nerve to come crawling back?”

Chris kept his voice steady, but there was tension in his jaw. “Blood ties don’t just disappear because of a few words. My father was just angry when he said those things. We had a misunderstanding with Layla. I just want to see her. Step aside, Mr. Carter.”

Carter scoffed. “Don’t act like you care. If you’re not disgusted by yourself, I sure as hell am.”

Carter deliberately raised his voice, making sure everyone could hear. “Where was this ‘family bond’ when you helped Xena steal my sister’s work? Did you ever stop to think that Layla was the one actual

If Chris wanted to use the media to paint William as a petty, manipulative villain standing in the way of a family reunion, then so be it. He would play the role. “You…” Chris hadn’t expected the head of the Lucas family to be so unreasonable, so shamelessly bold. He had assumed William would care about his reputation, would follow the usual rules of engagement. But clearly, William didn’t play by the rules. Grinding his teeth, Chris spat out his next words. “What right do you have to speak for Layla? Why are you always by her side? She’s already dying. What more do you want from her?” “Wow,” Carter scoffed, “Not everyone is as vile as your family. You really think everyone’s just looking for ways to use people—” “I want her.” A deep voice cut through the air. Carter froze mid-sentence, his jaw dropping. What? Was his uncle… confessing? Right here? In front of everyone? Did he really have to go this far?!Chris was just as stunned. He stared at William in di

As expected, within half an hour, William Lucas and Layla Xander's names were trending at the top of the hot search list, with the buzz still skyrocketing. “So William Lucas actually has feelings like a normal human? I always thought he was just a money-making machine with no emotions!” “I’m crying! This is the most heartbreaking love story ever. He knows she’s running out of time, yet he still wants the whole world to know how much he loves her!” “People used to say Layla was useless, but now? She’s the ultimate winner in life. Who could’ve seen this coming?” “Am I the only one who just feels bad for her? She could’ve had such a beautiful life, but fate won’t even let her live…” The comments were overwhelmingly positive, filled with admiration and sympathy. For once, the internet was unified. But in reality, it was a completely different story. *“Ivan, look at what you’ve done! I told you to keep an eye on William, and this is how you ‘keep an eye’ on him? How c

“Fine! If he wants to throw everything away for love, then I’ll grant his wish!” Hearing this, Scarlett panicked and quickly sat down beside Mr. Lucas Sr. “Honey, calm down! William is your son—he—” “So are the others!” Mr. Lucas Sr. was furious. “And it just so happens that they’re all coming home for Thanksgiving. Perfect timing! We’ll discuss a full executive restructuring of Lucas Corporation!” Scarlett’s heart dropped. She wasn’t well-versed in corporate management, but even she knew what a high-level reshuffle meant. Power would be redistributed. Over the years, William had placed his most trusted people into key management positions. If Mr. Lucas Sr. really reset the board, then everything William had worked for would be wiped out. This time, Mr. Lucas Sr. was serious. “Honey, you can’t do this…” Scarlett grabbed his arm, but he forcefully pushed her away. Standing up, his expression was grim. “This is all William’s own doing!” “Honey! He’s our so

The entire internet was in an uproar, but Layla, the center of it all, remained completely unaware. She had long since lost the energy to check her phone, and none of the doctors or nurses dared mention it in front of William. Over the course of the day, she only noticed Carter looking unusually troubled. Out of concern, she casually asked, “What’s wrong? Something on your mind?” Carter hesitated. “Sis, Uncle William—” “He might not be able to stay for Thanksgiving.” William cut in casually, stopping Carter from saying anything more. Layla didn’t think much of it. Curious, she asked, “Why not?” “His parents want him home.” William glanced at Carter, his tone carrying a subtle warning. “You wouldn’t want to break your parents’ hearts, would you?” Carter scowled. Not only was his uncle keeping him from spilling the truth, but he was also sending him home? “I guess that makes sense.” Layla nodded. “Thanksgiving should be spent with family.” Since the conversa

Just as William stepped out of the doctor’s office, he came face-to-face with Sean, who had just walked out of the elevator. The moment their eyes met, hostility was unmistakable. Sean had rushed straight to the hospital the moment he saw the trending news after landing. He had imagined countless possibilities for why William was staying close to Layla. But the one possibility he never considered was that William actually liked her. He refused to believe it. A surge of territorial rage burned in his chest, his vision turning red. Sean grabbed William by the collar without hesitation. “William Lucas, tell me the truth! What’s your real reason for getting close to Layla?” The next second, his wrist was seized and twisted at an unnatural angle. A scream of pain tore from Sean’s throat. “And what right do you have to ask?” William was half a head taller, his sharp gaze looking down on Sean with an air of cold superiority. Sean gritted his teeth, swallowing t

Ivan led William to a quiet corner of the hospital, away from prying eyes. “I just got off the phone with Aunt Scarlett. Your dad is furious—he’s planning to reshuffle the company’s executive board because of you.” He exhaled. “Aunt Scarlett asked me to talk some sense into you. She wants you to go home for Thanksgiving and apologize.” After getting chewed out twice in one day by Scarlett, Ivan’s head was still ringing from the scolding. He let out a long sigh. “You were too impulsive this time. Was it really necessary to make such a scene over getting rid of Chris?” “You think that’s all this is about?” William’s voice was low and sharp, tinged with disappointment. Ivan paused, caught off guard. He studied William carefully, emotions swirling in his chest. Scarlett wasn’t wrong—they had grown up together, practically sharing a brain most of the time. If anyone understood William, it should be him. And yet… today, he didn’t. William had always been comp

As Carter left, silence filled the hospital room. Neither Layla nor William spoke. Her mind was a tangled mess, so when William reached over to adjust her blanket, she instinctively flinched away. William’s hand paused midair. His gaze lifted to hers, sharp and questioning. “What’s wrong?” Layla, feeling a little uneasy, scrambled for a distraction. “What did the doctor say?” “He recommends another round of chemotherapy.” William tucked the blanket around her carefully, his voice calm but firm. “If we start this week, you’ll have a full week to recover. By the time Thanksgiving’s comes, you’ll be in much better shape.” “I don’t want to do chemo anymore.” Layla’s voice was soft but steady. “You saw the results last time. It didn’t help at all. It just made me suffer more.” “Try again.” William’s grip on his emotions was tight, but his voice still held a faint tremor. “At least hold on until Levi gets back. He’ll find a way to cure you.” “No.” Layla sm

Layla woke up to sunlight streaming through the window. Squinting slightly, her gaze landed on William, who sat nearby with his eyes closed, seemingly resting. He looked thinner than before, his already sharp jawline now even more pronounced. Despite the gold-rimmed glasses softening his appearance, they couldn’t hide the faint exhaustion under his eyes. Every time she woke up, he was always there. At first, Layla had thought it was coincidence, but as time passed, she realized that he never left. Even someone as slow as her could tell. William cared about her—more than just as a friend. But anything beyond that, she didn’t dare to think about. “What are you thinking about?” His deep voice startled her, making her panic for a brief second. “N-Nothing.” She shook her head quickly. “I thought you were asleep.” “No.” William removed his glasses and stretched slightly. “I just finished reading some documents and was resting for a bit.” He got up and walk

“The first time I watched the promotional video, I was blown away by the scenery. The second time, I realized there was a deeper meaning. Layla Xander filmed those children who had been left behind, showing their everyday lives. She clearly wanted to draw attention to their reality!” “I grew up as a left-behind kid myself. I know exactly how hard it is. Thank you, Miss Xander, for letting people see them! From now on, if anyone dares to bash her, I'll be the first to stand up and fight back!” “If it weren't for how beautifully she shot the promotional video, YT Corporation would never have noticed the town or the children. Layla truly did something incredible.” “Beauty, kindness, and talent—Layla Xander is the full package!” At the top of the trending page, an account called “LittleDianaHere” (who claimed to be a local) shared another piece of information:“Miss Xander is personally sponsoring every child who appeared in the promotional video, covering their education all

“Mr. Zion, Mr. Lucien is getting impatient...” the secretary reminded him quietly.Zion snapped back to attention, scowling. “Fine. Let’s go.”When they arrived outside the CEO’s office, Zion knocked lightly on the door. A sharp, furious voice came from inside.“Get in here!”Zion hurriedly pushed the door open. “Lucien, what happened? Who got you so worked up?”“You mean you still don't know?”Lucien’s temper flared even hotter. He slammed his palm against the desk several times, making the whole table shake.“I told you to get in touch with Xavier Taylor. Did you handle it?”Zion panicked. “I... I'm still working on it. His side keeps giving excuses, saying he's too busy lately. I didn’t want to bother him...”“Busy?”Lucien waved him closer with an icy smile. “Come here. Take a good look at what he’s so busy with.”Zion did as he was told and stepped closer. The next second, Lucien grabbed him by the back of the neck and forced him to bend over, his hands instinctively b

“I’m talking to you about something serious, and you’re still glued to your phone?” Zion’s voice was full of irritation.Only then did Carly finally put her phone away, looking at him with a hint of impatience.“You've repeated yourself three times already. He then narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the pocket where Carly had stashed her phone. “Don't tell me you're still thinking about Layla Xander’s studio.” Carly's heart sank. “How did you know?” “Your mom told me.” Zion stepped closer, his expression serious. “Look, Carly, I'm willing to chalk up what you did before to immaturity. But if you even think about pulling something like that again—” “You’re spying on me?” Carly’s face turned cold. “I’m an adult. Can’t I even have a little privacy?” “You’re our daughter. Everyone was both shocked and thrilled. They kept asking Layla over and over, needing to be sure it was really true.“Wow! Things are finally turning around! Who cares about those commercial gigs? A commission from a legendary artist is the real prize!”“Who would’ve thought? Just last month, we didn’t have a single job, and now we’ve been personally invited by Mr. Zeppelin Mason. Not even in our wildest dreams!”“It’s all thanks to Layla’s connections! Back when we first opened, so many big names showed up to support her. How did we not think to reach out to them last month?”The chatter kept going until Layla cleared her throat and spoke up firmly.“We didn’t get here because of connections. We got here through hard work. Step by step. There were no shortcuts. Every opportunity we have now, we earned.”She paused, her voice steady. “And for every project going forward, I want us to put in the same heart and effort we did with the small-town promotional video. Thanks to the rising popularity of the small-town promotional video, the studio had been flooded with appointment requests over the past week. Although they still had not secured any major commercial contracts yet, the overall atmosphere in the studio had lifted significantly. Some team members even started dreaming big, vowing to create the best city promotional videos in the world and put every hidden gem on the global map. However, shooting city promotional videos meant a lot of traveling and a lot more manpower. After the previous wave of departures, the studio was seriously understaffed, and the HR department had to scramble to start emergency hiring.Seeing the studio slowly getting back on its feet, Layla found herself busier than ever, to the point where she wished she could clone herself just to keep up.In the middle of the chaos, she received a phone call.“Layla, have you had time to think about the offer I mentioned last time?” The voice on the other end wa

Before long, Mrs. Jenkins reached Kiera's side. Only then did she notice Layla standing at the end of the hall. Her expression immediately darkened.“What are you two doing here?” she demanded.“Nothing,” Kiera said quickly, grabbing her mother’s arm. “We just ran into each other and chatted for a bit.”“What could you possibly have to talk about?” Mrs. Jenkins shot Layla a look of pure disdain, but her warning was directed sharply at Kiera. “You stay away from her. That woman is nothing but shameless—”“Mom!” Kiera cut her off in a panic, rushing to say goodbye to Layla. “Miss Xander, sorry to bother you. We'll be going now.”Before Layla could even respond, Kiera tugged her mother away.As she watched the mother and daughter disappear down the hallway, Layla couldn't help but feel puzzled. “What was going on with Kiera?” Layla wondered.Outside the private dining room, Mrs. Jenkins yanked her hand free and turned on Kiera, her face thunderous.“Why didn’t you let

During the celebration dinner, Layla received a call from Jenny.Since it was too noisy inside, Layla grabbed her phone and stepped out into the hallway, finding a quieter corner before answering. “Miss Jasper.”“Did you forget you even have a mentor?” Jenny half-scolded. “Something this big happens, and you didn’t even think to tell me? I had to find out online!“If I don't mean anything to you anymore, then stop thinking of me as your mentor,” she huffed.“Don’t say that,” Layla said quickly, her voice warm and coaxing. “I just didn’t want you to worry. And honestly, it’s a complicated situation. I didn’t want you getting dragged into it.“Besides, it’s not that serious. I’ve been handling it fine. If I ever hit a wall, you’d be the first person I’d call.“You’re not just my mentor. You’re my safety net. Fabian muttered under his breath, “Weren't you crushing on Mr. Lucas before?”“Nope! I’m all about Miss Xander now!” Diana declared, purposely raising her voice so Layla could hear her loud and clear. “Smart, capable women are the real deal! Who wouldn’t be smitten?”Layla chuckled. “I’ll gladly accept your admiration.”“Aaah! She accepted it! Did you hear that? I knew it! Women really are the best!” Diana squealed in excitement, practically bouncing in place. Fabian could only shake his head and gently push her away, then hurried to wrap up the call with Layla.*As the promotional video’s popularity exploded, the calls started pouring in that very afternoon. Most of them came from the mentors, artists, and family friends that Jenny had once introduced to her. They had only just found out about the troubles Layla’s studio had been facing, after seeing the video hit the trending charts.Normally, those artists lived in their own world, blissfully detached from outside news.

Scarlett was curled up on the sofa, scrolling through her phone. She had just finished watching the entire promotional video when she muttered, “Looks like a great place to walk around.”“Not bad,” William replied without even looking up.Scarlett shot him a look and said, a little sharply, “Your dad ended up in the hospital because you ran off with Layla to the south.“I’m not saying you can’t go travel and clear your head, but you can’t be following a woman around like that. It doesn't sound good if people start talking, you know?”William furrowed his brows and was about to respond when Scarlett added, “How about this? Next time you want to follow her somewhere, bring me along. If people see a mother and son traveling together, it’ll look a whole lot better than making it seem like you're chasing after her.”Feeling quite pleased with her own cleverness, Scarlett nodded in satisfaction. “I usually only travel abroad, but clearly, there are plenty of beautiful places right here
