Chapter 233

Author: Eli Sole
“Even if I were to die right now, I wouldn’t have any regrets…”

“Layla.”

William cut her off sharply, his voice laced with anger. He didn’t want to hear this. He refused to hear it.

But this time, Layla didn’t change the subject like she used to. She stubbornly pressed on.

“When I first found out I was sick, I was in complete shock. I couldn’t understand why the heavens would do this to me. I’m still so young. Why am I being sent to the afterlife so soon?

“Once I calmed down, I told myself that for whatever time I had left, I would live for myself. But how? I had no idea.

“Then, I met you. I met Carter. I did so many things I never even dared to dream of before. I even started to foolishly believe I could survive…”

“Stop.”

William’s voice trembled slightly, almost pleading.

But Layla was too lost in her own thoughts to notice.

“The truth is, the heavens have been kind to me. Before I go, they’ve given everything back to me. What else do I have to regret?”

Outside the hospital entrance, a crowd of reporters had already been blocked off by security, but that didn’t stop them from raising their cameras, focusing on the tense standoff between Chris and Carter. Carter stood with his arms crossed, looking at Chris with nothing but disdain. “Are you Xander people ever going to be done? You’re the ones who publicly cut ties with my sister and now you have the nerve to come crawling back?”Chris kept his voice steady, but there was tension in his jaw. “Blood ties don’t just disappear because of a few words. My father was just angry when he said those things. We had a misunderstanding with Layla. I just want to see her. Step aside, Mr. Carter.”Carter scoffed. “Don’t act like you care. If you’re not disgusted by yourself, I sure as hell am.”Carter deliberately raised his voice, making sure everyone could hear. “Where was this ‘family bond’ when you helped Xena steal my sister’s work? Did you ever stop to think that Layla was the one actual

If Chris wanted to use the media to paint William as a petty, manipulative villain standing in the way of a family reunion, then so be it. He would play the role. “You…” Chris hadn’t expected the head of the Lucas family to be so unreasonable, so shamelessly bold. He had assumed William would care about his reputation, would follow the usual rules of engagement. But clearly, William didn’t play by the rules. Grinding his teeth, Chris spat out his next words. “What right do you have to speak for Layla? Why are you always by her side? She’s already dying. What more do you want from her?” “Wow,” Carter scoffed, “Not everyone is as vile as your family. You really think everyone’s just looking for ways to use people—” “I want her.” A deep voice cut through the air. Carter froze mid-sentence, his jaw dropping. What? Was his uncle… confessing? Right here? In front of everyone? Did he really have to go this far?!Chris was just as stunned. He stared at William in di

As expected, within half an hour, William Lucas and Layla Xander's names were trending at the top of the hot search list, with the buzz still skyrocketing. “So William Lucas actually has feelings like a normal human? I always thought he was just a money-making machine with no emotions!” “I’m crying! This is the most heartbreaking love story ever. He knows she’s running out of time, yet he still wants the whole world to know how much he loves her!” “People used to say Layla was useless, but now? She’s the ultimate winner in life. Who could’ve seen this coming?” “Am I the only one who just feels bad for her? She could’ve had such a beautiful life, but fate won’t even let her live…” The comments were overwhelmingly positive, filled with admiration and sympathy. For once, the internet was unified. But in reality, it was a completely different story. *“Ivan, look at what you’ve done! I told you to keep an eye on William, and this is how you ‘keep an eye’ on him? How c

“Fine! If he wants to throw everything away for love, then I’ll grant his wish!” Hearing this, Scarlett panicked and quickly sat down beside Mr. Lucas Sr. “Honey, calm down! William is your son—he—” “So are the others!” Mr. Lucas Sr. was furious. “And it just so happens that they’re all coming home for Thanksgiving. Perfect timing! We’ll discuss a full executive restructuring of Lucas Corporation!” Scarlett’s heart dropped. She wasn’t well-versed in corporate management, but even she knew what a high-level reshuffle meant. Power would be redistributed. Over the years, William had placed his most trusted people into key management positions. If Mr. Lucas Sr. really reset the board, then everything William had worked for would be wiped out. This time, Mr. Lucas Sr. was serious. “Honey, you can’t do this…” Scarlett grabbed his arm, but he forcefully pushed her away. Standing up, his expression was grim. “This is all William’s own doing!” “Honey! He’s our so

The entire internet was in an uproar, but Layla, the center of it all, remained completely unaware. She had long since lost the energy to check her phone, and none of the doctors or nurses dared mention it in front of William. Over the course of the day, she only noticed Carter looking unusually troubled. Out of concern, she casually asked, “What’s wrong? Something on your mind?” Carter hesitated. “Sis, Uncle William—” “He might not be able to stay for Thanksgiving.” William cut in casually, stopping Carter from saying anything more. Layla didn’t think much of it. Curious, she asked, “Why not?” “His parents want him home.” William glanced at Carter, his tone carrying a subtle warning. “You wouldn’t want to break your parents’ hearts, would you?” Carter scowled. Not only was his uncle keeping him from spilling the truth, but he was also sending him home? “I guess that makes sense.” Layla nodded. “Thanksgiving should be spent with family.” Since the conversa

Just as William stepped out of the doctor’s office, he came face-to-face with Sean, who had just walked out of the elevator. The moment their eyes met, hostility was unmistakable. Sean had rushed straight to the hospital the moment he saw the trending news after landing. He had imagined countless possibilities for why William was staying close to Layla. But the one possibility he never considered was that William actually liked her. He refused to believe it. A surge of territorial rage burned in his chest, his vision turning red. Sean grabbed William by the collar without hesitation. “William Lucas, tell me the truth! What’s your real reason for getting close to Layla?” The next second, his wrist was seized and twisted at an unnatural angle. A scream of pain tore from Sean’s throat. “And what right do you have to ask?” William was half a head taller, his sharp gaze looking down on Sean with an air of cold superiority. Sean gritted his teeth, swallowing t

Ivan led William to a quiet corner of the hospital, away from prying eyes. “I just got off the phone with Aunt Scarlett. Your dad is furious—he’s planning to reshuffle the company’s executive board because of you.” He exhaled. “Aunt Scarlett asked me to talk some sense into you. She wants you to go home for Thanksgiving and apologize.” After getting chewed out twice in one day by Scarlett, Ivan’s head was still ringing from the scolding. He let out a long sigh. “You were too impulsive this time. Was it really necessary to make such a scene over getting rid of Chris?” “You think that’s all this is about?” William’s voice was low and sharp, tinged with disappointment. Ivan paused, caught off guard. He studied William carefully, emotions swirling in his chest. Scarlett wasn’t wrong—they had grown up together, practically sharing a brain most of the time. If anyone understood William, it should be him. And yet… today, he didn’t. William had always been comp

As Carter left, silence filled the hospital room. Neither Layla nor William spoke. Her mind was a tangled mess, so when William reached over to adjust her blanket, she instinctively flinched away. William’s hand paused midair. His gaze lifted to hers, sharp and questioning. “What’s wrong?” Layla, feeling a little uneasy, scrambled for a distraction. “What did the doctor say?” “He recommends another round of chemotherapy.” William tucked the blanket around her carefully, his voice calm but firm. “If we start this week, you’ll have a full week to recover. By the time Thanksgiving’s comes, you’ll be in much better shape.” “I don’t want to do chemo anymore.” Layla’s voice was soft but steady. “You saw the results last time. It didn’t help at all. It just made me suffer more.” “Try again.” William’s grip on his emotions was tight, but his voice still held a faint tremor. “At least hold on until Levi gets back. He’ll find a way to cure you.” “No.” Layla sm

From the moment Mr. Xander stepped through the door, his face was clouded with anger. He didn’t even bother putting on a friendly face for Felix like he normally would. It wasn’t until Felix left after dinner that Xena finally approached her father. “Dad, did you go see my sister today?”“She’s no sister of yours! There’s no place in this family for someone as heartless as her!”Furious, Mr. Xander slammed his hand against the table, the loud thud making Xena flinch.Mrs. Xander rushed over to shield her daughter. “Easy, don’t scare her. She’s pregnant, remember?”“I’m fine, Mom.” Xena lowered her gaze, looking guilty. “Dad only lost his temper because of me. Maybe we should just drop it. I’ll talk to Felix myself. I’ll keep the baby, and we’ll figure the rest out later.”“What are you saying? You can’t have that baby now!”Mrs. Xander immediately objected. “Even if you two get married afterward, people will still talk! If the baby comes before the wedding, everyone will trea

“If you don’t like it here,” William said coolly, “the elevator’s just to the right.”Scarlett was fuming. Just a few words in and she was already being shown the door? Was she not even allowed to speak? And she hadn’t even said anything bad about Layla. She was just feeling protective of her precious son. Was that so wrong? For the rest of the time, Scarlett sat stiffly on the couch, clutching her glass of water and sipping from it every now and then. William sat across from her on another sofa, silently scrolling through his phone.Neither of them spoke. The only sound in the apartment came from the kitchen, where the soft clatter of cooking echoed faintly.Soon, the scent of food filled the air.Scarlett couldn’t help glancing toward the kitchen. Through the frosted glass, she could only make out the blur of Layla’s figure. Doubts crept into her mind. “Could Layla’s cooking actually be edible?” she wondered. After all, she was still a woman who had grown up with a silver sp

Layla braced herself as she welcomed William and Scarlett into her apartment. After a quick round of small talk, she headed into the kitchen with the groceries. She had just started unpacking when she heard William call from behind, “Need a hand with anything?”“No, I—”She was about to turn him down, but then thought of Mr. Xander and hesitated. Instead, she handed him a bag of snap peas. “Help me trim these.”“Sure.”William stepped up beside her without hesitation. As he got to work, she lowered her voice. “How’s Grandpa Perry doing?”“He’s fine,” William replied, eyeing her curiously. “Why are you suddenly asking about him?”“Gerald Xander came to see me today. He wants to meet with Grandpa Perry.”Layla said her father’s name without a trace of emotion, as if she were talking about a stranger.William glanced over at her. “Did he give you any trouble?”“Not really. He can barely walk straight, can’t argue, and definitely can’t catch up to me. What else is he going to do

Inside the car, Layla caught a glimpse of Mr. Xander through the rearview mirror, hurling his cane several feet in a fit of rage. A cold smirk tugged at her lips. The Xander family really hadn’t changed one bit. They only showed kindness to people they could use. They acted like their condescension was generosity, then expected gratitude in return. But to her, this so-called “Xander bloodline” was nothing but bad luck.Shaking off the thought, she turned up the volume on the stereo, letting the music drown out the lingering irritation. If anything, she felt even more satisfied than before.Humming along to the tune, she swung by the market and picked up groceries before heading home. When she got off the elevator, she walked over and rang the doorbell to William’s apartment.Just as the door opened, a woman’s voice called from inside, “William, I ordered food from Stonebridge Bistro. Let’s have dinner together tonight!”William gave a quick explanation, “That’s my mom.”He glan

The internal review meeting wrapped up smoothly, and everyone left the conference room full of confidence. That afternoon, the finalized promo video was handed over to Fabian, who would submit it to the local publicity office for the final round of approval. With nothing left to do until feedback came in, Layla gave the whole team a well-deserved break.By the time the workday ended, the office had completely emptied out.Layla stayed behind to chat with Fabian after receiving a message from him, and as a result, she ended up being the last one to leave the studio. After locking the front door, she headed toward her car out of habit, thinking about stopping by the market on the way home. She was planning to cook dinner and invite William over. She didn’t notice the stern figure getting out of a nearby car—her father.“Layla Xander.”She turned at the sound of his voice and met his displeased gaze, her brow twitching slightly. With a cane in hand, Mr. Xander approached her, his

After thinking it over, William figured the whole thing felt more like a guilt-trip performance. It seemed like Scarlett was putting on an emotional act to pressure him into going back to the Lucas family. The only question was how long she planned to keep it up.Still, Scarlett had been pampered all her life. Living in his place, with no one to wait on her hand and foot, she probably wouldn’t last long. Sooner or later, she would give up and leave. With that in mind, William didn’t bother chasing her out. He simply gave her a cold warning. “You can stay. But don’t cause trouble for Layla.”“No problem at all!”Scarlett agreed far too quickly. “I already made up my mind before I came. I won’t interfere in your love life ever again. You can count on that.”William was rendered speechless and frowned. Now he was even more certain. Something about her behavior just wasn’t right.*Meanwhile, Layla had left early that morning. The roads were clear, and after a smooth half-hour drive

“No, thanks.”Layla gave a tired smile and gently turned down William’s offer. “I have an early meeting tomorrow, and eating late messes with my sleep.“Mr. Lucas, you should get some rest too. Good night.”With that, she walked past him and returned to her apartment, closing the door behind her without hesitation. The sound of the door clicking shut made William frown slightly. Something felt off.Meanwhile, Layla stood in the entryway, slipping off her shoes as her mind wandered.“Layla Xander, you ruined him. You ruined the Lucas family,” she thought to herself.Gwen’s harsh words echoed suddenly in her mind, stirring the emotions she had tried to bury. All this time, she had avoided thinking too deeply about William’s choices. She was afraid that if she read too much into them, she would just end up fooling herself. But after seeing Gwen today, it finally hit her.William had stepped down from his pedestal for her. And she was still pretending not to see it.If the dista

“You’re a perfectly decent young woman. Why do you have to go and steal someone else’s man?”“Hannah,” Layla gently tugged on Hannah’s sleeve, giving her a look to stop.As Gwen walked toward the lounge door, Layla spoke up calmly, “The matching engagement ring—the woman’s one. You don’t have it, do you?”Gwen paused for a second at the doorway but didn’t reply. Without looking back, she walked out. That was all the answer Layla needed. She had suspected for a while that Gwen didn’t have the ring.William had always worn the man’s band. And knowing how much Gwen loved him, there was no way she would have hidden the woman’s ring if it had truly been hers. Now it seemed clear that he had never given that ring to anyone.
