Chapter 533

Author: Eli Sole
Xavier turned to Shane and said calmly, “I can take a punch. It’s not a big deal.

“But you crossed the line when you started spreading lies and smearing Miss Xander’s reputation.

“The one you owe an apology to is her.”

“I…”

Shane tried to straighten up, but Zion immediately pressed him back down with a firm grip.

“You need to apologize,” Zion said coldly, tightening his hold.

“You can’t go around slandering your own sister.”

Shane’s face turned red with frustration. He swallowed his anger with great difficulty.

No matter what, Zion was Carly’s father. If Shane embarrassed him now, he could kiss any hope with Carly goodbye.

“Sorry,” Shane forced the word out through gritted teeth, sounding more like he wanted to grind Xavier’s bones to dust than offer a real apology.

Watching the scene unfold, Layla found it almost funny. The same Shane that even Mr. Xander couldn’t control was now obediently listening to Zion.

It seemed Shane really did like Carly quite a bit.

Inside the private room, the server poured pre-aerated red wine into crystal glasses and placed them in front of Layla and Xavier. At Xavier’s signal, the server quietly exited, leaving them alone.Layla lifted her glass first, offering a polite, apologetic smile. “Mr. Taylor, I’m sorry you had to witness that scene earlier. It was really embarrassing.”“I actually found it rather refreshing,” Xavier said, raising his glass. “You’re very different from the women I usually meet.”He smiled. “The fact that you agreed to have dinner with me tonight is my honor. I should be the one making the toast.”“You’re too kind,” Layla replied, clinking her glass lightly with his. “I should be the one thanking you. Thanks to you, I got to vent a little just now.”She had seen through the situation at a glance. Zion must have come tonight specifically for Xavier and because he needed something from Xavier, he had forced Shane to apologize. Otherwise, Zion probably would have made

“Please, go ahead, Mr. Taylor,” Layla said politely.Xavier took a slow sip of his wine before speaking. “YT Corporation has a children's charity fund. Over the years, we’ve done a lot of work, though we’ve kept a low profile. “This time, the reason we made it onto the trending searches was partly because of the buzz created by your promo video.”He smiled slightly. “I was thinking, why not take advantage of the momentum and have you serve as the foundation’s public ambassador? “It would maximize the publicity effect, boost YT’s public image, and at the same time benefit you as well. It would be a win-win.”Layla hesitated, a trace of unease flashing across her face.“Is there a problem?” Xavier asked, curious.“It really is a good opportunity,” Layla said carefully, “but... I’m just a photographer. The attention I’m getting now is pure luck. “If YT wants a public ambassador, it would make more sense to choose someone with stronger public influence, a well-known fig

Xavier walked straight into the elevator. Layla did not hesitate and followed closely behind.Only after the doors closed did she finally ask, “From what he said, it sounds like you’re familiar with Mr. Lucas.”“We worked together,” Xavier replied easily, glancing sideways at her. “Didn't you hear about the partnership between the Lucas Corporation and YT Corporation two years ago? We collaborated on chip development.”Layla looked slightly embarrassed. “I only returned to the country this year.”“I see,” Xavier said with a small laugh. “I had heard that you and Mr. Lucas had quite a close relationship. I thought you would have known about something that major.”Layla was instantly frustrated. She regretted even asking.Fortunately, Xavier dropped his gaze and did not press further. Layla wisely chose to stay silent.Outside the clubhouse, Xavier escorted Layla to her car.“Miss Xander, I hope we will have the chance to meet again,” he said meaningfully. It was c

After hearing everything, Chris frowned thoughtfully and said, “Could the rumors outside be true? The contract between YT Corporation and the Lucas Corporation really has ended.“But why does Layla have anything to do with it?”He turned to Shane, suspicion in his voice. “Be honest. What exactly is going on between Xavier and Layla? Don’t exaggerate or make things up.”“I’m telling the truth!” Shane rolled his eyes, his tone full of disgust. “I saw it with my own eyes. Xavier went to dinner with Layla and even backed her up. It didn’t look like a normal relationship.”He sneered.“And come on, Layla’s always been good at wrapping men around her finger. Now that William Lucas is out of power and cut off from the Lucas family, she’s probably looking for someone better to latch onto.”“She sure has some skills,” Mr. Xander said grimly. “She even managed to reel in Xavier Taylor.”“She’s just like a damn vixen,” Shane continued bitterly. “Any man who gets involved with her

“If you’re getting involved with Layla at a time like this, aren’t you afraid William will skin you alive?” Lucien shot Zion a glare, growing even more convinced that his younger brother was seriously lacking in brainpower.“And from what you just said, it sounds like all of this is just your own speculation,” Lucien continued coldly. “Xavier and Layla had no connection before. The only overlap they had was the project with the small town.“Maybe Xavier meeting her for dinner had everything to do with that project. But by the time it came out of your mouth, you made it sound like they had some kind of shady relationship.“Listen—this kind of nonsense you can say to me in private, but don’t go blabbing it around. If word of this crap gets back to Xavier, we can forget about ever getting a chance to meet with him again.”Lucien paused for a moment, letting out a heavy sigh. “I really didn’t expect things to go the way they did tonight. Forget it. You keep trying to get in to

After thinking it over, Scarlett let out a quiet sigh.An hour later, they arrived safely at the nursing home. After checking with a nurse, they learned that Mr. Perry Sr. was in the rehabilitation room.Following the nurse’s lead, they walked to the glass-walled rehab room and peered inside. At a glance, they spotted Mr. Perry Sr. struggling to rise from his wheelchair. He gripped the armrests tightly, trembling as he slowly lowered one foot to the ground. Even such a simple movement seemed to take everything he had. After barely shifting his weight, he had to stop and catch his breath.Layla’s chest tightened painfully at the sight. The spirited Mr. Perry Sr. she remembered was gone. Then, with a loud thud, Mr. Perry Sr. collapsed onto the floor.Panicking, Layla rushed into the room, reaching out to help, only to have Mr. Perry Sr. slap her hand away.“I told you, I can do it myself!” He gritted his teeth, hands shaking against the floor as he tried to move his legs, but h

Half an hour later, Mr. Perry Sr.'s rehabilitation session finally ended. Sweating profusely, he was helped back to his room by the aides for a shower. As Layla stepped out of the rehab room, she turned back and said lightly, “Mr. Lucas, you two wait here. I’m going to use the restroom.”Scarlett immediately jumped in, “Perfect! I was just about to go too. Let’s go together.”“Sure,” Layla agreed easily, turning to lead the way down the hallway.William instinctively reached out, wanting to stop Scarlett, but his hand closed on empty air. She was already striding after Layla at full speed. The restroom was located at the far end of the hallway. As they rounded the corner, Scarlett called out, “Miss Xander.”Layla paused and turned back without surprise, as if she had already guessed Scarlett would find a chance to speak privately.“What would you like to say, Mrs. Lucas?”Her calm, straightforward attitude caught Scarlett a little off guard.Scarlett drew in a breath, tryin

“I used to think you were pretty smart too,” William said, mimicking Layla’s earlier tone. “Especially good at thinking you’re smarter than you really are.”Scarlett stared at him in disbelief. “Why did both of them sound exactly the same when they were being sarcastic?” she muttered.Without waiting for her response, William turned and walked away. Scarlett hurried after him, refusing to give up. “You’re just blinded by that woman. You can’t even see what’s really going on—”Their voices and footsteps faded into the distance. From around the corner, a figure quietly stepped out of the men's restroom.Layla was just exiting the hallway, drying her hands, when she caught sight of the familiar figure. She froze. “You? What are you doing here?”Sean turned around, his gaze unusually soft. “Layla. Long time no see.”“Let’s keep it that way,” Layla replied coldly, instantly on guard. “You’re not here to see Grandpa Perry, are you?”“Would they even let me?” Sean

“I got it. Just send me the address.”Kiera’s voice came through flat and hollow, barely audible over the background noise.Sean didn’t sense anything unusual. “No need. I’ll come pick you up.”She didn’t answer. She simply ended the call, letting her phone drop weakly to her side.Noticing how pale her daughter looked, Mrs. Jenkins asked with concern, “Kiera, what’s wrong? Who was that on the phone?”Kiera forced a faint smile. “It was Sean. He wants me to join him at a dinner tonight.”“Well, isn’t that a good thing? It means he values you. He wants everyone to know what a wonderful wife he has.”She reached for Kiera’s hand. The moment their skin touched, she frowned. “Kiera, your hand is freezing. Are you feeling sick? I bet it’s that jinx Layla—just seeing her—”“Mom.”Kiera cut her off gently. “You heard what Grandpa said earlier. What happened between Sean and Miss Xander was Sean’s fault. She had nothing to do with it.“And honestly, Grandpa seems so much better with

As soon as Layla finished speaking, the reporters rushed back to her, voices overlapping.“I’ll schedule one!”“Count me in!”Just like that, Mr. Lucas Sr. and Lucien were quietly edged out of the crowd.Although Layla had, in a few short sentences, deflected the attention away from them, Mr. Lucas Sr. was seething.“What was that woman trying to pull? That wasn’t helping us. She was clearly showing off!“As if we need her help! Even if I had admitted right there that we tried to suppress her, so what? You think any of those reporters would dare run their mouths online?”Fearing they would attract more media attention, Lucien quickly guided his father away from the commotion.“Dad, it’s Mr. Mason’s exhibition today. Let’s not make a scene. No matter what’s going on, we owe him that much respect.”Lucien looked genuinely troubled.“I just didn’t expect Mr. Mason to be so publicly supportive of Layla. Wasn’t he always known for keeping out of personal drama?”“God knows what t

“That must be Mr. Mason,” William said calmly, using the moment to push the wheelchair forward. He had no intention of wasting time dealing with Mr. Lucas Sr., and he would rather not let Mr. Perry Sr. get dragged into unnecessary tension either.Watching them walk away without so much as a backward glance, Mr. Lucas Sr. clenched his fists, furious.“That ungrateful brat didn’t even bother to say hello!” he thought bitterly.“Dad, don’t get upset. William, he just—”“Don’t you defend him!”Mr. Lucas Sr. shot Lucien a fierce glare.“You shouldn’t have called out to him in the first place! He was cast out of the Lucas family and that makes him a stranger now!”“It’s not that serious, he—”Lucien stopped himself the moment he caught his father’s icy stare. He lowered his head without another word, just in time to hide the faint flicker of satisfaction in his eyes. From a distance, flashes from the media’s cameras lit up the front entrance. Mr. Lucas Sr. took a deep breath to st

“Are you blaming me?” Mrs. Jenkins asked softly. “I...”“I’m not,” Kiera said with a light smile.“I just don’t want you worrying about my life anymore. After all, I’m married now.”Mrs. Jenkins opened her mouth to respond, then let out a sigh instead.“I’ve only made things harder for you in the end.”*Elsewhere in the gallery, William was pushing Mr. Perry Sr.’s wheelchair, but his thoughts were clearly elsewhere.Mr. Perry Sr. noticed and chuckled.“If you want to go find Layla, just go. I can manage on my own.”“How could I leave you alone?” William replied. “I brought you out of the nursing home today. If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to face the Perry family.”Mr. Perry Sr. let out a laugh.“You don’t strike me as someone who cares much about what the Perry family thinks.”He smiled knowingly.“Just now, the way you spoke sounded like anyone who touches Layla is getting kicked out of North City. Even the Perry family’s heir was just a ‘disgraced illeg

“Tsk.”Layla slowly crossed her arms over her chest, her voice unhurried and cool.“So what if I had a past with Sean Perry? That seems to be everyone’s favorite excuse to stir up drama.“I figured the Jenkins family would be the last people who’d want to bring it up, but clearly you’ve all been holding onto it. Fine. Since you want to talk about it, let’s clear the air.“Back then, Sean cheated on me first with Xena Xander, no less. If your family was willing to take him in after that, I really have to admire how generous you all are.“I don’t know if Sean ever felt lucky to break things off with me, but I can tell you I was very glad he let go. Honestly, I should be thanking the Jenkins family for saving me the trouble.”Color drained from Mrs. Jenkins’s face, then came rushing back in angry red.“You—your mouth is as sharp as ever! Sean simply came to his senses early and saw that Kiera was a thousand times better than you!“You’re just jealous she married him! A woman like

The setting sun streamed through the car window, casting warm golden light across William's face. The play of shadow and light outlined his already defined features like a painting drawn in bold, deliberate strokes.Layla rested her chin on one hand, watching William with amused curiosity, as if waiting for him to come clean on his own.But William pretended not to notice. He kept his eyes fixed straight ahead, calm and unwavering — like a man about to be sworn into office. As the car pulled into the underground parking garage, Layla smirked to herself, “Alright then. If you won’t admit it, I’ll pretend I don’t know either.”*Time passed. April had come and gone.Zeppelin Mason’s art exhibition opened as scheduled and luckily, the day was bright and clear. There had already been rumors swirling that this would be his final show, marking his official retirement from painting. So reporters from every outlet arrived early, waiting eagerly to catch his appearance and grab the fir

After hanging up the phone, Layla returned to the couch.Carter looked up curiously.“Who was that, Sis?”“The service center,” Layla replied with a hint of frustration.“They said one of my car’s parts is damaged and needs to be ordered from the manufacturer. It'll take about two weeks before I can get the car back.”She frowned slightly.“It’s strange. The car was working just fine when I dropped it off. How could a part suddenly be broken?”“Totally normal,” Carter said casually, pulling out his phone. “Some issues only show up during inspection.”As he spoke, he started typing quickly. “Perfect timing! I’ll text Uncle William and ask him to pick you up after work today. No need for you to take a cab.”“I can drive her—” Seth offered.“No need,” Carter cut in without even looking up.“They live together. No point in bothering Director Mason.”After a moment, Carter looked back up with a grin.“Uncle William said yes!”Layla said nothing. Instead, she just looked at him

Little by little, Layla found herself drawn in, her thoughts swept along by Seth’s rhythm as she unconsciously stepped into his world.Seth might look laid-back and a little rough around the edges, but the moment he started talking about film, he became sharp, articulate, and deeply professional. As a director, he had the ability to oversee everything on set — exactly the kind of big-picture thinking Layla was still learning to master. His arrival, she had to admit, couldn’t have come at a better time. Before she realized it, admiration quietly bloomed in her heart. She had to give him credit. Seth Mason’s billion-dollar box office success wasn’t luck. He had truly earned it.“Director Mason, I—” she began. But a knock at the door cut her off.Layla gave a small, apologetic smile, then turned toward the door.“Come in.”A moment later, a head poked through the doorway. It was Carter, grinning ear to ear.“Hey, Sis! You’ve got company, huh…?”As his eyes landed on Seth, Carte

“Pretty good,” Layla said seriously after thinking it over for a moment. “But it would've been even better if he wasn’t quite so enthusiastic.”Seth really was a little too friendly, pushing past the social distance Layla was used to.If he had been a complete stranger, she probably would have thought he was some kind of weirdo. But since he was Zeppelin’s grandson, that connection naturally made him feel a little more familiar, a little easier to trust.“Maybe that’s just the way he is,” Layla said with a small smile. “It’s actually pretty rare for someone in their thirties to keep that kind of pure, genuine enthusiasm.“When it comes to relationships, you have to be willing to take the first step or nothing ever happens. Besides, if you’re still timid at this age, you’ll never get anywhere.”Because the evening had been so relaxed and pleasant, Layla was completely at ease, speaking whatever came to mind without filtering herself. But William, sitting silently beside h
