Chapter 691

Author: Eli Sole
“I don’t want to talk to you anymore!” Olivia huffed, her frustration clear, but then she turned to Gwen with a softer expression. “So, how’s my mom doing lately?”

“She’s doing well.”

For some reason, Gwen always felt a bit tense around Olivia.

“Aunt Olivia, Wilson asked me to pass on a message. He said he’ll definitely pay you back someday.” Gwen’s curiosity got the better of her. “What did you give him?”

“Oh, nothing much.” Olivia waved it off casually, a faint smile playing at her lips. “Wilson’s always been polite with me, but I remember when he was little, he never hesitated to ask for money for toys or snacks.”

She made it sound like nothing more than pocket change.

But only Lexi knew the truth. Olivia had given Wilson all the savings she had painstakingly accumulated over the years. The Harris family company had been struggling with financial issues for a long time, and that money was a lifeline.

Back then, the Lucas family had proposed a marriage alliance with the Harris

Just as Layla hung up the phone, William’s name popped up on the screen. She raised the phone to her ear again. “Mr. Lucas, what brings you calling at this hour?”“And Miss Xander, what brings you free enough to pick up?”Their polite exchange hinted at the same thing—they were both busy with work.Layla smiled. “I just got off a call with Hannah. I was about to head out for work.”“Was it about her resignation?” William asked.“Yeah,” Layla exhaled lightly. “At first, I was worried her family pressured her into it, but turns out it was her own decision.“She actually sounded okay on the phone. Pretty upbeat, really.”After saying that, Layla added smoothly, “So, did you need something?”“No.”William stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing out at the skyline. His reflection in the glass was faint and blurred, but what he saw in his mind was the bright, smiling face of Layla. He had just wrapped up a conversation with Xavier. For no reason at all, he found himself thin

“Hannah, resigning is a big deal. Why didn’t you tell me?” Layla asked, her voice tinged with worry.“It’s not that big a deal…” Hannah sounded a little guilty. “People online are just blowing it out of proportion. I just… don’t want to do it anymore.”“I thought you always wanted to take over the company. Wasn’t starting the magazine your way of proving yourself to your family? Now that it’s doing well, why are you walking away?”“I was wrong.”Hannah’s voice softened. “Taking over the company was to prove something to them. But making the magazine… that’s what I really wanted to do for myself.“I didn’t tell you about resigning because I didn’t want you to worry. You’re already so busy on set.“Who could’ve guessed my brother would make such a spectacle of it? He took over like it was some grand victory. I gave it up willingly, but he still acts like he won.”Hannah let out a bitter laugh. “It’s honestly ridiculous. He’s always been like this, ever since we were kids.”For a

Standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows, William gazed out over the bustling cityscape below. The YT Corporation’s office tower stood proudly in North City’s new district, a world apart from the aging business hub where Lucas Corporation’s building was located. Here, every skyscraper was sleek and modern, symbols of growth and innovation, a place where the dreams of a new era took root, springing up like wildflowers after a spring rain.Lost in thought, William didn’t even notice when Xavier approached from behind.“The contract should’ve arrived at Lucas Corporation by now.”William’s focus snapped back. He responded with a low “Mm.”“I took a look at the new terms. Profit-sharing and technology distribution have been adjusted. Do you think Lucien will accept it?”Xavier’s voice held a hint of amusement. “You’re basically rubbing it in his face, making it clear who holds the power.”“And what can he do about it?” William’s eyes remained fixed on the vibrant skyline. “Asi

“You two… you really don’t plan to come back to the Lucas family, do you?” Mr. Lucas Sr. demanded through clenched teeth.“Is the Lucas family some kind of paradise we absolutely must return to?” Scarlett shot back, her voice sharp with irritation.“You—”A wave of anger surged in Mr. Lucas Sr.’s chest, leaving him breathless. His vision blurred, and his body wavered. Instinctively, he reached out to steady himself against the table, barely managing to stay upright.“Are you okay?” Scarlett’s expression shifted, genuine concern flashing in her eyes. But Mr. Lucas Sr. ignored her, his gaze fixed on William, fury blazing in his eyes like a fire threatening to consume him.“I can leave her alone,” he forced out, “but she will never step foot in this family. I will never acknowledge her as my daughter-in-law—not even on my deathbed.”The last words came out through gritted teeth, his anger twisting every syllable. For a man who had always prided himself on being in control, this wa

Mr. Lucas Sr. instinctively looked away. “I still make the decisions here.”“Fine.”William didn’t press further, but just as Mr. Lucas Sr. began to feel a hint of relief, William’s voice cut in again, calm and steady.“One condition for this partnership—I don’t want you interfering in my life anymore. And that means keeping your hands off Layla. Not a single hair on her head.”Mr. Lucas Sr. bristled. “Are you seriously mixing personal matters with business now?”“Isn’t that exactly what you taught me?” William’s expression remained indifferent. “You used business to force me to compromise in my personal life. I’m simply using your own tactics against you.”“You—”Mr. Lucas Sr. slammed his hand on the table, rising to his feet. “I pressured you to wake you up, to help you see clearly. But you—you're using the family’s interests as a bargaining chip. It’s pure selfishness!“What’s so special about that woman? What kind of spell has she cast on you that you’re willing to go this

A long, tense silence stretched on, and Mr. Lucas Sr. eventually grew bored of his own outburst. With a frustrated sigh, he finally stopped ranting.Scarlett took this as her cue. “I’ve passed on the message. Do you still want to meet him?”Mr. Lucas Sr.’s brows knitted together in a deep frown. “Don’t tell me you actually think there’s nothing wrong with what he said?”“At first, I thought there was,” Scarlett admitted, letting out a weary breath. “But now… Forget it. If you still want to see him, I’ll set up the time and place.”Mr. Lucas Sr. fell into a brief, brooding silence before squeezing out a single word.“Fine.”“Got it.”The call ended abruptly.Mr. Lucas Sr. stared at the receiver, frustration boiling over. In a fit of anger, he grabbed the landline’s handset and slammed it down with a loud clatter.*When William arrived at the private dining suite the next day, Mr. Lucas Sr. and Scarlett were already seated, but not together. They sat far apart on opposite side
