Evelyn stared at Adrian.

“Your mother?”

Victor nodded slowly.

“She was the last person your father spoke to before he disappeared.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“That's impossible.”

“I was there.”

Victor's voice was quiet.

“Your father called me that night. He told me he had discovered who was behind the money transfers.”

“Who?” Evelyn asked.

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Your mother.”

The room fell silent.

Adrian shook his head.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out an old phone.

“Your father recorded the conversation.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“Where is the recording?”

Victor held up the phone.

“Right here.”

Adrian immediately reached for it.

Victor pulled it away.

“Not until you hear what he said.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Play it.”

Victor pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then a man's voice came through.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

Her father's voice.

“If anything happens to me, don't trust anyone in the Vale family.”

Evelyn's heart stopped.

The recording continued.

“Especially not Margaret.”

Adrian went completely still.

His mother's name.

Margaret Vale.

A woman he had defended all his life.

A woman Evelyn had always believed was distant but harmless.

Victor stopped the recording.

“That's all I have.”

Adrian stared at the phone.

“Where did you get this?”

“Your father sent it to me.”

“When?”

“The night before he died.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn't you tell me before?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of my father?”

“No.”

Victor looked toward the door.

“Afraid of the people who killed him.”

A sudden sound came from outside.

All three turned.

Footsteps.

Adrian immediately moved in front of Evelyn.

“Stay behind me.”

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then a knock sounded.

Three slow knocks.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

He reached for the door.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I need to know who it is.”

The door opened before he could touch it.

A woman stood outside.

Elegant.

Composed.

Her silver hair was perfectly styled, and her expensive coat looked untouched by the night's chaos.

Adrian's face went pale.

“Mother.”

Margaret Vale smiled faintly.

“Adrian.”

Her eyes moved to Evelyn.

Then to Victor.

The smile disappeared.

“So,” she said quietly, “you finally found him.”

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

“You know Victor?”

Margaret didn't answer.

Adrian stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to take you home.”

“Why?”

“Because you're in danger.”

Adrian laughed coldly.

“From whom?”

Margaret looked at him.

“You already know.”

Her gaze shifted to Evelyn.

“You should never have brought her into this.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“My father knew you.”

Margaret's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Evelyn noticed.

“You knew my father, didn't you?”

Margaret remained silent.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn's heart pounded.

“What happened to him?”

Margaret looked at Adrian.

“Your husband has been trying to protect you from the truth.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No more secrets.”

Margaret sighed.

“Your father was going to expose people who were far more powerful than he understood.”

“Were you one of them?”

Margaret's eyes hardened.

“No.”

“Then why did he warn Victor not to trust you?”

Margaret didn't answer.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Mother, leave.”

She looked at him sadly.

“You still don't understand what your father did.”

“What did he do?”

“He betrayed me.”

Adrian froze.

Evelyn stared at her.

“Your mother?”

Margaret looked directly at Evelyn.

“Your father and I were working together.”

Evelyn's breath caught.

“For what?”

Margaret's voice dropped.

“To bring down the person who controls both our families.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Then why did you hide it?”

“Because the moment your father discovered the truth, he wanted to expose everything.”

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

“And that would have gotten all of you killed.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Who is behind it?”

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered,

“The person you're trusting most.”

Evelyn felt a chill run through her.

She looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked equally confused.

Margaret suddenly stepped backward.

“I've said too much.”

She turned to leave.

“Mother!”

She stopped.

Adrian's voice was cold.

“Who are we supposed to be afraid of?”

Margaret looked over her shoulder.

“Not who.”

A pause.

“Where.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret looked directly at her.

“Look inside your father's old house.”

Then she walked away.

Adrian immediately followed her.

“Mother!”

But she was already gone.

Evelyn stood frozen.

Victor looked at her.

“She knows something.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And so do we.”

She looked at the old key in Victor's hand.

“The safe.”

Adrian turned back toward them.

His eyes met Evelyn's.

For once, neither of them needed to say it.

They both knew where they were going next.

Her father's old house.
