I still can’t believe my eyes as I look over my shoulder to find Cole here. His name is Cole, of course, it is, a name as beautiful as he is. Why didn’t I do my homework when it came to my mother? In my defense, how could I have known my mother would marry someone like him? Her usual targets are older men, almost dying men, men who will leave their fortune to her because they think she will take care of them. What a joke.

“What is going on?” Steph asks, and I snap my head around, looking at her, trying to pretend everything is okay, but I can feel his eye on me. “Do you know him?” She asks, lifting her chin slightly, pointing at Cole.

“Shhhh,” I say, pulling her by her wrist to the corner of the room away from prying eyes and ears.

“Hey, you’re hurting me. What the hell is going on, Nicci? You have been on edge since your mother introduced you to her husband.” She says, and I close my eyes for a second, and when I open them, it’s like Steph can read my mind.
