Chapter 237 – The Silence Between Us

*********************Mack’s POV************

The morning starts like it’s holding its breath.

Claire sits across from me at the small kitchen table, her fingers curled loosely around her mug, eyes fixed on the steam rising off her coffee like it’s trying to tell her something. She hasn’t touched it. The sunlight cuts across her cheekbones, highlighting the pale shadows under her eyes.

She’s thinking hard — I can tell. Not about the news on the muted TV or the half-burnt toast between us. About something she hasn’t told me.

I give her space, waiting.

She looks up once, catches me watching her, then drops her gaze back to her coffee. It’s the same pattern as last night, the same tight-lipped restraint. She’s holding something in, and every instinct in me is screaming to drag it out of her. But I know her well enough to know that pushing will only make her retreat deeper into herself.

I want to tell her the silence between us is louder than any argument we could have. But I bite it

************************* Mack’s POV********************* Henry didn’t keep me waiting. He never did, not when the air between us hummed like this—thick with unspoken things neither of us had the stomach to pretend away. The old study smelled the same as it had when I was a boy—polished mahogany, leather, faint traces of cigar smoke clinging to the walls like the memories that lived here. The fire in the grate was low but stubborn, embers glowing a sullen red, and Henry stood with one arm braced on the mantel, a glass of whiskey turning slow in his other hand. “Close the door,” he said without looking at me. His voice was calm, but it had that dangerous stillness that only came when Henry was already several steps ahead of you. I shut it, the click loud in the quiet, and walked to stand opposite him. “We need to talk about your wife.” That got his eyes on me. Not a blink. Just a slow lift of his gaze, dark as the ocean before a storm. “Eve.” “Don’t play neutral with me,”

  • The CEO’s Temptation    Chapter 236: The Weight of Morning.

--- *******************************(Claire’s POV)********************** Morning came slowly, as if the sun itself hesitated before touching the earth. Pale light bled through the huge curtains, tracing faint lines across the floorboards, reaching toward me where I lay tangled in sheets that still smelled faintly of Mack. My eyes stayed closed, not because I was tired, but because waking meant remembering. And remembering meant feeling everything all over again. Eve’s words had stayed with me like a stain. I could still hear her voice — smooth, venomous, certain-the way she twisted my existence into a crime, as if Liam’s death had been written into my hands before I’d even touched him. She turned everything upside-down, making me the culprit of his crimes, not yet, but that's what she wants to do. For a long moment, I just lay there on the bed, my fingers curled loosely in the edge of the blanket, letting my thoughts tangle and untangle again. Mack was somewhere in the hous

******************************(Claire’s POV)*********************** The first time I noticed it, I told myself it was nothing. A misplaced letter was in the stack of bills on my kitchen counter. No return address, just my name in sharp, slanted handwriting that I didn’t recognize. Inside was a single photograph of the ocean—deep, restless waves under a sky heavy with storm clouds. No note. No signature. Just the ocean, frozen in grayscale, as if whoever had taken it wanted to strip it of warmth. I stared at it too long. The smell of the paper reminded me faintly of saltwater. I slid it into the drawer by the sink, shut it, and told myself it was some strange misdirected art project. But that was last week. Today, the wrongness came again. The day had started normally enough. Mack had left early for a meeting, promising to be back by dinner. I’d kept myself busy—organizing the small study, making tea, telling myself that normalcy was something you could rebuild brick by b

  • The CEO’s Temptation    Chapter 235: Closer Than I Meant to Be.

******************************Liz’s POV**************************** The rain had been falling since late afternoon, a soft, persistent curtain against the windows of the small study where Rowe and I had ended up after the day’s endless noise. The war room had been too loud, the corridors too full of voices I wasn’t ready to hear. Here, the silence felt heavier, like the world outside had muted itself so it wouldn’t intrude. He was leaning against the desk, one hand in his pocket, the other curled loosely around a glass of water he hadn’t touched. I was in the armchair by the fire, legs curled under me, staring at the flames as though they could tell me what I was doing here. “You’ve been quiet all day,” Rowe said, his voice low, almost cautious. I glanced up. His eyes were darker than usual, shadowed from exhaustion, but still steady in that way that made it hard to look at him for too long. “Maybe I’m just tired,” I said. “You’re not just tired.” He set the glass down and
