Amara’s POV

I gently passed his side, behaving as if he was totally invisible. Ignoring his deadly comment, I walked into my office with my head down, sober, as if I just had a hangover.

Derek or whatever my boss had called him scared the life out of me. I’m not scared of what he could do; probably kill me because I’m so sure my ghost will haunt his ass till the end of time.

I walked up to my desk and started the work I was given. I made sure I arranged all of his schedule for the day properly and set an alarm on the new official phone to notify me once it is an hour to the specific event.

“May I come in?” I looked up to see it was my boss and his friend. Henry’s phone rang almost immediately and he had to leave me to the not so comfort of his friend.

“I learnt you’re Amara Collins, a new personal assistant to my best friend”

Best what? I’m so fucked up right now.

“I just started working here today so I didn’t really know how high and mighty you are, my lord” I replied mockingly.

“I like you, shorty. You’re fearless. Almost everyone I’ve met gets scared of me”

Okay! Hold up, lord Voldemort!

“There’s nothing really scary about you. You’re just a big boss” I replied half smiling

“Don’t worry yourself too much, my eyes are on you. I’m a really busy man so I’ll see you later, little devil”

I almost punched the back of his head out of annoyance. I still don’t know how someone can be so proud as a peacock. Carrying yourself with pride is enough but behaving as if you’re the most powerful is out of it. Really out of it.

“What time is my appointment with the Stonewallers?” Henry asked, peeping into my office.

“That’ll be 10, which is probably, now” I said surprisingly. I hadn’t realized the time was that far spent.

“Okay, get ready and meet me in my office in five minutes, I’ll be waiting for you. If you’re late, then you’ll have to make it to the restaurant yourself” He instructed

“Do I need to take anything with me?”

“Your Brain most especially” What! “Including a notepad and a pen. I might need to put down some necessary informations” I nodded angrily.

I hadn’t expected him to talk to me that way. I had thought Henry was the sweet type of boss who wouldn’t derive any joy from treating his employees like they’re any less to him.

Angrily I grabbed my purse which had my phone, a pen and also a notepad. I also pretended to remove my brain from the table and fix it properly in its rightful place.

Using my hand to straighten my skirt properly, I also fixed my lips and fortunately enough, I met Henry at the door of his office about to start leaving.

He only looked at me and didn’t say any other thing. We walked towards the driveway and he collected the car key to drive us by himself.

“Where are you from?” He suddenly asked as we were on our way to the restaurant.

“I grew up in Trenton but I later moved to New York to stay with my friend for a few months and later moved here to California a few weeks ago” I replied.

“That’s great. So, what made you apply for my company?” He asked

“I needed a better pay so I thought here will give me something better. I just applied and fortunately enough I got the job”

“Good for you” He didn’t say anything after that. The silence was heartbreaking and I thought of how I could do something about it. I had to get him in on a conversation. If he acts as if I’m invisible, then when will he get to notice me and also remember who I am.

“Where are you from?” I asked him.

“Excuse me?”

“I have a thing that won’t let me stay silent for too long if I do, I might get really emotional” I half lied and his expression turned soft.

“Okay… I’m from New York City as well but I had to move here years back because of business. Any other question?”

“No, I don’t have any other questions yet but maybe later”

“That’s better because I don’t talk much” He focused back on driving and stole a glance at me once in a while.

We finally made it to the fancy restaurant and had a meeting with the executives of Stonewallers. It is a big organizer that actually wants our company to merge with theirs for a diamond extraction process in South Africa.

Once in a while, Henry would signal at me to write down what the other executives were saying or to get the contact of one of the miners down in South Africa and it was so nice working right beside him.  The meeting took more than two hours and didn’t end until it was five.

“Are you ready for a trip to South Africa?” Henry asked me immediately after the meeting. He had ordered for some dishes immediately after the executives left.

“Am I going to South Africa?” I asked surprisingly.

“Of course! I’ll have to check up on the extraction process next month or in two months time and you’ll have to come with me because it’s your job” he explained.

“Okay” I simply replied not really knowing what to say.

“Your boyfriend won’t be cool with it?”

“I don’t have a boyfriend”

“Good for you”

“Do you have a girlfriend?” He whipped his head up suddenly at my question. I know I’m being too bold with my boss but I feel like I’ve known him all my life.

“No, why do you ask?” He answered unsure of what could be going on.

“Good for me. Because I don’t like unnecessary competition” I said, giving myself an high five in my head.

“Competition for what exactly if I may ask, Miss Amara?”

“You”

Immediately I said that his face turned stone-cold and he looked at me angrily.

“Maybe I appeared too soft to you, Amara but listen and listen good, the next time you open your mouth to say such disgusting and annoying thing, I wouldn’t hesitate to walk you out of my company’s door without a dime. Kindly, find your way out of here”

Angrily he stood up and marched out of the restaurant, leaving me feeling stupid and confused about how I’ll get home tonight.

Yes, Amara may think these things, but to actually say them, to her boss, way over the top!!
