Chapter 4

Author: Cat Eat Fish
The call connected almost right away. A woman's cool voice came through. "Mr. Campton?"

I gripped my phone and got straight to the point. "Ms. Ford, I'd like to resign and terminate my contract."

There was a brief pause on the other end. Then, without needing further explanation, Natalie Ford understood and began walking me through the process.

After hanging up, I returned to my desk and started organizing my resignation documents.

Seven years at the same company meant there was an absurd amount of work to hand over—artist profiles, brand partnerships, film and TV projects, private schedules, and crisis management plans.

I sorted through everything one file at a time, organizing every detail exactly as I always had. I even made a separate page listing Seraphine's dietary restrictions and medication allergies.

When dawn broke, I had compiled everything and emailed it to the company. The subject line read, "Handover Documents".

I removed my employee badge and placed it at the very back of my drawer. It was finally time to bid farewell to these seven years.

The resignation process couldn't be completed immediately, so I took the following day off first. I spent the morning heading home.

When Dad saw me, he was startled. "Levi, why do you look so pale?"

I casually told him I hadn't slept well.

He stared at me for a long while, but didn't call me out on it. Instead, he tentatively asked, "About the blind date we talked about yesterday… Are you still meeting her this afternoon?"

I nodded. "Of course."

Dad was taken aback. His eyes turned slightly red. "Good. I'll make you breakfast."

I sat at the dining table, watching Dad's busy figure moving around in the kitchen, and a warmth slowly spread through my chest.

For years, I had given all my patience to Seraphine. When it came to my own family, however, I had always been distant and dismissive.

Now, after falling flat on my face, I came to a painful realization that the person who cared about me the most was Dad.

At 3:00 pm, I arrived at the cafe on time.

My blind date was Stormi Gallagher. She was a doctor, with delicate features, a gentle presence, and an impressive eloquence.

She didn't immediately ask about my past. Instead, she talked with me about work, life, and the cities we adored. Honestly, the date went better than I expected. It didn't feel forced, at least.

Toward the end of our conversation, she looked at me and smiled. "Mr. Campton, if you came today because you're trying to move on from a relationship, that's okay. We can take our time."

I was caught off guard. I surmised that Dad must've let something slip.

I was quiet for a few seconds before nodding. "Thank you."

Stormi handed me her business card. Her voice was warm. "If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out. Even if this doesn't lead to anything, we can still be friends."

I accepted the card. For the first time in a long while, I felt something inside me loosen.

Third-Person POV

Meanwhile, back at the company, the atmosphere in the conference room was suffocating.

The brand representatives had already been waiting for 20 minutes. Seraphine sat at the head of the table. Her expression was ice cold.

She had always been punctual and hated people disrupting her schedule, yet today, she hadn't even received the presentation materials before the meeting.

The company director, Philip Stark, had no choice but to speak. "Perhaps Levi might be stuck in traffic."

Seraphine's brows drew together as she picked up her phone and checked it. There were no messages, and not even an excuse for being absent.

Last night, after hanging up on Levi, she hadn't taken his mention of quitting seriously. This wasn't the first time he had thrown a fit, either.

Every time he got upset before, he would always calm down by the next day and appear in front of her on schedule, handling everything with utmost professionalism.

Hence, this morning, she simply assumed he would do the same as he had over the past seven years and show up, emotions buried.

However, now, it was already 9:07 am. There was still no sign of Levi.

At 9:20 am, the materials still hadn't arrived. By 9:30 am, the brand representatives were starting to look unhappy.

At last, Kai rushed into the conference room with the documents. The moment Seraphine saw his hurried entrance, her expression turned gloomy. "Where is Levi?"

Philip immediately chimed in. "Doesn't he know how important today's meeting is? Where did he go? Why are you the one here?"

Pin-drop silence descended in the conference room. No one dared to answer.

Kai was still catching his breath. After a moment, he finally managed to speak. "I'm so sorry, Ms. Winslow, but Levi took a marriage leave. I just took over his work, so I'm still not familiar with everything."

Seraphine snarled, "What did you just say?"

A year later, Stormi and I got engaged. There were no trending headlines, no flashy announcement on a variety show, or an extravagant ceremony for the world to see.Our parents met, shared a homemade meal, and spent the evening together. After dinner, Stormi looked at the engagement rings on our fingers in the backyard and asked, "Do you think it was too… simple?"I shook my head with a smile. "Not at all."I meant it. There were no games, no secrets, and no future that never seemed to arrive. She remembered to bring me an umbrella when it rained. She picked me up whenever I worked late. She listened carefully whenever I talked about even the smallest things. On the rare occasions when memories of the past left me quietly staring into space, she never asked questions and simply stayed by my side.Through Stormi, I understood what it felt like to be loved the way I deserved. We never officially announced our engagement, but the news still spread among friends. That evening, Kai

"What does this mean? Didn't she literally just propose to that guy on TV a few days ago?""They weren't even trying to hide the fact that the relationship failed.""Is Seraphine okay? What's her publicist doing?"I stared at the statement, my heart sinking.Almost at the same time, Seraphine's call came through. This time, it wasn't from an unknown number. She had gotten a new one. After hesitating for a few seconds, I answered. Her voice was hoarse, like she hadn't slept in days. "Did you see it?"I frowned. "I did. What were you thinking?""I ended things that needed to be ended," she said. "I've dealt with Will. The engagement is off too."I was at a loss for words. This was totally out of character, even for Seraphine. She understood better than anyone what public opinion and personal interests meant. To deny the engagement publicly at a time like this was no different from destroying the devoted lover image she had carefully built."So?" I asked. The silence lasted for

"Blind date?"Seraphine stared at Stormi. The coldness in her eyes intensified by the second. It was as if she finally understood why I had taken a marriage leave.A laugh escaped her, but there was no warmth in it. "You sure moved on quickly, Levi."I pulled my wrist free from her grip. The skin was already red where she had held me. I slipped my hand into my pocket. "What does it have to do with you?"Seraphine looked at me, speechless by the realization that I wasn't speaking out of spite. She tried to step closer, but Stormi stopped her. "Ms. Winslow, as a public figure, causing a scene with a man in a residential area like this won't look good if word gets out."Causing a scene with a man… Every word made Seraphine's face more sour."This is between him and me," she shot back.Stormi smiled. "But he clearly doesn't want to speak to you."I looked at them and suddenly felt drained. "Enough."I turned to Seraphine. My voice was soft but sharp. "Aren't you all about ending

Levi's POVMeanwhile, I was on the train back to my hometown.I leaned against the window, too exhausted to even keep my eyes open. I hadn't slept at all the night before, and I spent the afternoon meeting Stormi despite the exhaustion. It wasn't until I was finally sitting on this train that I felt the tightness in my chest ease a little. When I turned my phone back on, the messages came flooding in. The company group chats, work chats, and media groups were all blowing up. I didn't open any of them.Suddenly, Dad sent me a message."What's your ETA? I'll prepare barbecued ribs for you tonight."My eyes suddenly warmed as I stared at those words. For seven years, I had always been the one managing Seraphine's emotions, cleaning up messes, and holding down the fort. Now, for the first time, someone was waiting for me to come home and have dinner.By the time I got off the train, the sky had already begun to darken.Dad had returned earlier than I did and was already waiting a

When the apartment door opened, the silence inside felt almost unnatural. Seraphine stood in the entryway. Her footsteps came to a halt. The living room looked the same as before. The thin blanket she always used was still draped over the couch. A half-open box of stomach medicine sat on the coffee table. The soup Levi had been preparing last night was still in the kitchen.Something was missing, and she noticed it immediately. His things were gone. The black leather shoes he kept by the door, the shaving foam he always used in the bathroom, and even the book he left on the nightstand were all gone.He hadn't taken much, but he had erased every trace that proved he had once been there.Seraphine stood at the bedroom doorway, her chest taut. This wasn't another argument. Levi was serious. Her phone rang. It was a message from Kai."Ms. Winslow, I forwarded Levi's handover documents to your email."She opened her inbox. Immediately, the email at the top caught her eye. It was sen

Seraphine stared at Kai. The coldness in her eyes was overwhelming. Under her gaze, he felt his scalp go numb."L-Levi sent the handover documents last night," he said shakily. "This morning, he went through the leave process with HR. He said he was… taking a marriage leave."The conference room fell into another eerie silence. The brand director was the first to recover. He forced a laugh and tried to smooth things over."Well, young people and their big life events, am I right? It's understandable. Ms. Winslow, why don't we start the meeting first?"Seraphine didn't respond. She reached out and took the documents from Kai's hands. After flipping through a few pages, the crease between her brows deepened.Levi didn't do this. The formatting was wrong, and the key points were organized differently. He always wrote a tiny note at the bottom right corner of the first page of every meeting document—a reminder about who from the brand team had a short temper, who cared most about nu
