LOGINJoey's POV
I stared at myself in the mirror one more time. Roland had summoned me again today, asking me to look the part.
The dress I chose was unlike the dress from the quad. It wasn't as tight or as revealing, but it still was not something I would have picked out on any normal day.
It was something in between, something meant to keep Roland satisfied without making me feel completely sick to my stomach every time I looked down at myself.
I grab
Joey's POVI walked to the apartment door, still shaking, Roland's voice replaying in my head. Earlier, I had actually worried about him. I had noticed the bruise under his eye and wondered what had happened between him and his father. A small part of me had even wanted to reach out and check if he was okay. I should never have worried about him.For weeks, I believed Roland didn't know the full truth about what he was doing to me. I thought maybe his cruelty came from not knowing about Gabriel. I thought that if he didn't know about Gabriel, maybe there was still some reason for what he was doing. But he had known everything from the beginning. He knew about Gabriel. Our history. He knew everything, yet he still chose to do this to me. He had spent weeks pretending, smiling through it all, like some game he had already won.It was more than cruel. He knew exactly where Gabriel and I were hurting. He knew what his actions were doing to his best friend and continued anyway.I slowly
Joey's POVI didn't plan to follow them. My feet just moved on their own the second I saw Roland slip out after Gabriel and his father; something in his face was too tight for me to sit still and wait as he told me to.I stayed a few steps behind, careful with every step, and ducked around the side of the house when Roland stopped near the door. He didn't go out right away. He just stood there, hidden by the same shadow I hid in on the other side, and I realized, with a small jolt, that he was listening too.I heard most of it. Jeremiah's voice, calm and cutting. Gabriel's voice, tight and getting tighter. My mother's name said the way people say something they think is beneath them. My own name, and the word stripper, dropped so easily; I had to catch my breath.I pressed my back against the wall and closed my eyes, waiting for it to end. When the door finally slid open again and Gabriel walked back inside, Roland did not follow him in right away either. He stood a moment longer near
Gabriel's POV"What are you doing here?" The words came out flat, more of an accusation than a question. I looked past Dad to Roland, waiting for an explanation, but Roland looked just as blindsided as I felt, his mouth opening and closing, but no sound coming out."Gabe, I didn't--" Roland started."Matthew called me," Dad said smoothly, cutting him off before he could finish. "Said he was coming to see Roland. Since both of you are friends, I figured I would come along and see you too.""You should have told me you were coming," I said as soon as he finished, not hiding my annoyance. Dad's mouth curved, but not quite a smile. "If I had, would you have let me?"I did not answer that. We both already knew the answer.I turned and walked toward the back of the house, needing distance more than I needed to stand there and keep looking at him.Roland caught up to me before I got to the hallway."Ryder," he said, which made no sense until I realized he had meant to say something else en
Gabriel's POVMy sling finally came off that morning, and my shoulder felt strange without it, lighter but somehow more fragile, like it might slip out of place again if I moved too fast.Apparently, Dr. Conrad increased my off-duty time because he thought I would ruin my arm by disobeying him. But since I hadn't, he told me the real time. In two more weeks, I'll be cleared for football drills, and in another I'll be able to play.I couldn't wait.I stood in the kitchen testing my arm by rolling it slowly in small circles. Then I reached for a knife on the counter, determined to cook something myself for the first time in days.I got as far as lining up an onion on the cutting board before Ryder walked in and snatched the knife out of my hand."Absolutely not," he said."My arms are stronger," I said. "The doctor cleared me this morning.""The doctor cleared you for walking around in a sling, not knife work." He set the knife down on the far side of the counter, out of my reach. "Sit
Joey's POVI stared at myself in the mirror one more time. Roland had summoned me again today, asking me to look the part. The dress I chose was unlike the dress from the quad. It wasn't as tight or as revealing, but it still was not something I would have picked out on any normal day.It was something in between, something meant to keep Roland satisfied without making me feel completely sick to my stomach every time I looked down at myself.I grabbed my bag and headed for the door.Winona looked up from the couch, eyes moving over the dress slowly. She did not say anything right away, though I could see the questions already forming behind her eyes. It was softer this time than the last time she caught me dressed up and heading out early."That's..." She tilted her head. "...different. Not like the other one, at least.""It's fine, Winona.""I did not say it wasn't fine." She set her phone down on the cushion
Gabriel's POVI stood there a long moment, certain my eyes were playing some cruel trick on me. Joey and Roland together, his arm resting over her shoulders, and she wasn’t pushing it away.I thought about the cafe, about her sharp words the day before, about how every word she said had hurt me. Was she also doing this to hurt me? But it didn't make sense because she didn't know about Roland. She knew Ryder as my friend, but not Roland. But then again, Joey wasn't the kind of person to do this to get back at someone.I wasn't sure what was going on, though deep down I wanted to find out.Still, I did not approach them. I turned and walked the other direction instead, tray still balanced uselessly in my hands and my appetite completely gone."Davenport! Get over here!"Roland's yelled across the lawn. A few heads turned before mine did. I stopped, tray still in hand, and found him waving me over like this was the best possible moment for me to arrive.I didn't want to go over there, bu
