Lyla’s mouth opens slightly in shock. “I'm so sorry.” I study her face, looking for signs of pretense, but there's none. “It's fine.” I grunt, standing up and taking the plates to the sink. My mom and sisters. My heart beats.

I wasn't able to protect them that night. All they had done was go to the church to pray. I close my eyes, gripping the edge of the sink tight.

*“Don't be too long, Mama,” I shout out, knowing whenever she sets foot in the church, it could be hours before she comes out. “Emilio, my child, I want to go pray for the souls of your brother and you. I do not like these decisions you are taking,” Mama retorted, steeping down from the car. Ever since she found out my brother wanted to go back to the Mafia, she had been grumpy all day.

“You know, Mama left that life for a reason. And you guys want to drag her back into it,” my sister says, giggling. Her twin and she were the carbon copies of my mom. “Mama knows we need to do this.” I reply, hanging my head in shame. We didn't need to do it; we were just being stubborn. She ran away for our sake after all.

“Well, I hope you know what you're doing.” They step out of the car together, following my mom. Usually I would wait for them, no matter how long it took, but that night, I had to go for a meeting with Achilles. One of the twins had been tasked with calling me. I watch them walk away, my world, their blonde hair blowing in the cold winter. Luckily, they were dressed warmly. I will come pick them up later……*

“Emilio,” a voice intruded my thoughts. “Emilio,” Lyla.

She was by my side. “You're scaring me,” she whispered. That made me open my eyes. What was I doing that was scaring her?

I had my gun in my hand, pointed directly at her forehead. She was a brave girl; she didn't move; instead, tear tracks marked her face. “Please don't kill me,” her lips trembled.

I let out a sigh. “I was remembering something horrible, my little one. I wouldn't kill you.” I say. “Yet,” came her shaky reply.

I grin at her, putting the gun back into the waist of my pants. “Anyway,” I smile, feeling my demon come out slightly. It wants to play. “Let's play a little game.”

Lyla sits up straighter in her chair. “What game?” She asks, suspicion etched on her face.

“Cards my love,” I say, swiping out a packet of cards I had bought earlier. “I don't know how to play any card game,” Lyla replies, nibbling on her lips.

“Here,” I dragged the stool and sat on it. “I'll teach you.”

I open the pack of cards, pleased at how attentive she is. After I shuffle them, I place the stack in front of me.

“This game is different from what you know.” I informed her. “I'll pick a card and hide it. We each have three guesses to say which card it is. After three guesses, if you don't get it, you take off a piece of clothing.”

Yes, I know. A naked game. I really want to see her skin, and I could tie her and undress her, but sometimes I'm a gentleman like this.

“Really? That's silly,” Lyla confirms. She adjusts and smirks at me. “Ready.”

I smile back. “I'll go first.” I shuffle the card, looking into her dark eyes. Lyla is a mystery to me, I want to explore all her layers and know what exactly she's hiding, the kind of person she is. If the whole Daddy trained good obedient girl is an act. I already think it is but I want to see it for myself.

I pick a card and smirk at it. “First guess,” I say.

“Um, No. 5 Red Hearts,” she hesitates slightly. I shake my head no. “Ace, Black Clover,” I shake my head no again.

“One more guess.”

Lyla frowns at me, eyeing me from the bottom of her lashes. A hidden temper, she's really trying to make sure it doesn't come out. “God. I don't even know much about cards much,” she is frustrated. “10 Red hearts.”

I grin. “Wrong again love. One piece of clothing.”

If she had a gun, she could have probably shot my knee out with how she was looking at me. I smile wider, wondering if I could be the one to take her gun virginity. She pulls her top off and her nipples, fuck. Hard and pink and so ready for my mouth.

“My turn jerk.”

Seems she was a sore loser. She picks up the stack of cards, a frown on her face and mimics my movements, shuffling the cards just how she saw me do. A quick learner.

She pulls a card out and smiles a bit. “Guess.”

I lean back a bit. “Queen of Hearts, Red.”

Lyla’s mouth opens in shock. “How did you know that?” she screeches. “I'm a good body reader. “

She frowns at me and gets up from the chair, pulling her sweat pants down.

We played a couple of more rounds and I lost my shirt and pants along the way. Her eyes flick over my body at times, I know she has a lot of questions about my scars and who put them there. I haven't even told my brothers about who did them to me, choosing silence and bloodshed instead to let out my pain.

“This is so unfair,” Lyla cries, slamming the card down on the counter. I wiggle my brows at her, enjoying her annoyance. “Sore loser.”

“Cheat”

I gasp, clutching my chest. “Ms Russo I am not a Cheat.”

Lyla pauses. “Oh shit.”

“What is it?”

“I don't think I am Miss Russo. I said yes. I'm Mrs Donovan,” she whispers quietly.

I tsk. We hadn't considered that. “Well, you didn't sign the marriage certificate did you?” She shook her head no. “And you hadn't fucked him yet?” Her face warmed at that. “No, please. I just met him.”

I nod. “Well, you're still Miss Russo. Now ,take off your underwear, you distracting girl.”

She grins, “Saw through that, huh,” she steps out of her panties, bunching them in her fist.

I laugh at her. “It seems you've lost.”

“What is going on here?”

She raises her head and cleans her face, her brown eyes still filled with tears. I rub her hands, assuring her. “They tore our passports,” she whispers to me. I nod, encouraging her.“My husband didn't come home last night. He had told me what to do. If I do not return by 8 pm, take the children, look for the Draghi Brothers and run away.”I nod. “When he didn't come back by 8, I started doing as he instructed. I woke my daughters and my son up,” she lets out a choked sob and I rub her hands again. “Someone knocked. Exactly the way he knocks. Four times. I would knock back and then open the door. I never knew why he had that stupid tradition but I did it because he asked me to. A fun game he said,” she stares at Emilio as she says this.“When the knock came, I thought he had returned. I told my children to sit in their room and wait, I wanted to confirm it was really him.”“I knocked back and opened the door. Except it wasn't my Thomas. Four men stood at my door. They said they were

  • The Captured Mafia Bride   CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Lyla's POVThe city is just as bubbly as the last time I was in it six years ago. The ride from their house was fun, I could already tell the lives in the outskirts of town. The greenery, the sky. I wanted to stick my head out of the window but Emilio said no. Something about being safe in the bullet proof car.“How long will we be here?” I ask him as he takes a turn through a street. I have no idea where we are and I hate it. I hate how sheltered my life is. Where do I even run to? They wouldn't catch me easily. I had no survival skills ever.“A while. I have an important errand,” he smiles at me “You are my wing woman for the day.”I blanche. Being his wing woman doesn't sound fun. “What do I need to do?”He counts on his finger. “Look pretty. You're doing that. And shut up.”These men are exactly like my father. Always wanting me to shut up. Be quiet, do not speak, learn to just be seen.I face the other side, angry. At least he was doing me the favour of letting me have a burger,

Emilio's POVI watch Lyla closely, as she flips the book open. She seems like she's genuinely interested in it, giggling at times.“Ugh,” I groan. The chair I sat on is not particularly comfortable. My room is a mini dungeon. Knives, guns and even a rocket launcher hangs from the walls. My king-sized bed and these computers connected to the CCTV installed in the house , placed on a desk and table are the only pieces of furniture. Clothes are scattered everywhere, and I need a shower.I grin, watching my little bird. I know she wants to run, to flee. I can see it in her eyes when she thinks we're not watching her, her body language. She has run away from even her father once. If she gets the chance, I know she will run from my grasp before I can catch her.Too bad for her, I'm smitten. I do not know why. If it is her long luscious hair, her wide eyes that held such innocence, her soft pink puckered lips? The way her chest heaves, her bosoms rising every time she's flustered while she'

Lyla's POVA guard stands at the entrance to the library. He insisted on the door being open, saying something about new instructions from the boss. I just took everything in stride. I had a plan. I would escape from this place. I'm sure they already think I am a calm well brought up girl, which is what I have been trying to portray. “Get into their good graces, then you run away,” I whisper as I flick a new page to the book I started this morning. After the very award breakfast with Achilles. I took a shower and grabbed a couple of snacks I found in the kitchen. When I got to the library, a large grey bean bag, some pillows and a table with a chair were in the room. The bean bag faces the large windows and I opened the curtains, marvelling at the sight of their garden. Too bad they didn't trust me enough yet to let me out.I sip the diet coke I had grabbed, reading through the lies the male character was feeding the girl he cheated on. “What a loser,” I sigh, swiping to the next pag

  • The Captured Mafia Bride   CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Xiomar POVI left the house earlier than usual, making sure no one, even Achilles with his early routine, saw me. I had a few things to sort out with the gym and tattoo shops, and more importantly, I was meeting with the men of the Draghi Family.Achilles was the boss, the one that gave; instead, these men were mine. Selected by me to be trained fighters and smart peddlers. Someone has not been smart.“Hello, Boss.”“Yes, is everyone gathered there?” I ask Marco, one of my most trusted men. “Yes, I gathered everyone sworn here.”I ended the call. The road is lonely; it's barely three am, the witches' hour. Tonight was meant to be another round of initiation into the family. I would have to push that further; it was too early to open ourselves to newbies when we had rodents to deal with.My car came to a stop in the parking lot, different bikes and cars were lined up. They were all present. It was time to see who my suspect would be.Marco opens the door for me, murmuring silently un

  • The Captured Mafia Bride   CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Achilles' POV I hurry to the car, cursing the fact that I became so ruffled in front of her. I know what she's trying to do: weave her way into the hearts of my brothers and me. She is a little conniving snake, I think to myself, slamming the door hard. The road is wet; a slight drizzle had fallen earlier this morning. My itinerary for the day was simple. I had two important meetings, a phone call to make, and a traitor to catch. My phone rang. I answered without looking at the caller ID. “Hello?” I say, placing the call on the speaker phone. "You were not meant to do that,” a hushed voice whispered to me. I parked my car quickly at the side of the road. “Who is this?” I bark out, quickly sending a message to our IT guy, Isaiah, to start tracking the call I am on. He replies with a thumbs up and instructions to keep the caller on the line. “You were not meant to burst in and shoot everyone like that,” the whispered cry came back. “What do you want?” “Nothing. Everything. Except that
