Chapter 2

Author: Lucky Dreamer
"Victoria, don't worry about it. Marmalade must've been startled." Ethan reacted instantly.

He handed the baby to the nanny before striding to Victoria's bedside, deliberately blocking her view.

"You just gave birth. You're exhausted, and the last thing you need is more stress. I'll have Martha wheel this medical waste out, then call a vet to check on Marmalade." His words sounded perfectly reasonable, his face the picture of a loving husband.

Cassandra immediately chimed in, walking toward the cart, "That's right, Victoria. The delivery room still smells like blood. It's not good for you or the baby. I'll throw this bag away so Marmalade stops obsessing over it."

She reached for the black garbage bag.

The moment I saw her hand stretching toward it, fury exploded inside me.

[You conniving little snake! You've been freeloading off the Sterling family under the guise of being Victoria's best friend for years!]

[Now you're trying to steal the Sterling family's baby too?]

[Touch her if you dare!]

I sprang forward with all my force.

Just as Cassandra's fingers brushed the bag, I shot through the air and swiped my claws straight across her collar.

"Ahhh!" Cassandra screamed.

My razor-sharp claws shredded the silk scarf wrapped around her neck. As the scarf fluttered to the floor, an exquisite sapphire pendant hanging from a delicate chain swung into view.

Victoria's eyes widened.

The sapphire was flawless, catching the light with breathtaking clarity.

But what caught her eye wasn't its quality. It was the tiny chip along the edge.

Three years ago, she'd spent nearly three million dollars at auction to buy that pendant as Ethan's 30th birthday present. He'd accidentally nicked it not long after receiving it and had been upset for days.

Victoria had comforted him, telling him the tiny crack would bring good luck instead.

So why was that one-of-a-kind pendant hanging around Cassandra's neck now?

Silence swallowed the delivery room.

Victoria's breathing became uneven as she stared at the pendant resting against Cassandra's chest.

"Cassandra." Her voice was icy. "Where did you get that pendant?"

Cassandra's face drained of color. She hurriedly covered it with one hand. "I... I bought a replica… Victoria, don't get the wrong idea. I just thought it was pretty..."

Cold sweat beaded across Ethan's forehead. He spun around and pulled Cassandra behind him, shielding her completely.

"Victoria, are you seriously questioning me?" Pain filled his face, his voice trembling with restrained anger. "I've spent the last three years dedicating myself to this family. I've worked myself to the bone and devoted everything to you.

"You've barely given birth to our daughter, and now you're doubting me over a cat that's lost its mind... and a necklace that merely looks similar?"

His eyes reddened. The performance was flawless.

"Cassandra is your best friend. She's been running herself ragged taking care of you, and this is how you repay her? Are you suffering from postpartum depression? Are you imagining things?"

Victoria's lips trembled. Looking at Ethan's wounded expression, doubt crept into her heart. He'd always treated her so well. So well that she'd never once found fault with him.

Just as her resolve began to waver, the imposter baby's voice echoed through my mind again.

[Daddy's amazing! A few words and he fooled this idiot all over again!]

[Hurry up and get rid of that garbage bag! As long as that little witch dies, I'll be the Sterling family's only heiress!]

My whole body shook with rage.

These two backstabbing snakes were treating Victoria like a complete fool.

I charged at the garbage bag again, clamping my teeth onto one corner and dragging it across the floor with all my strength.

[Victoria! Don't believe him! Look at the bag! Look at the bag!]

The bag scraped noisily across the tiles.

Then, through the tear I'd made, the faintest cry finally escaped.

"Waahh… Waahh..."

It was barely audible, yet in the deathly silent delivery room, everyone heard it.

Victoria's body went rigid. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at the black garbage bag.

There was a baby inside.

Five years flew by in the blink of an eye.Little Stella grew into a bright, cheerful little girl. She inherited the Sterling family's intelligence, and somehow, she could understand my cat language. The baby-language gift had faded as she'd gotten older, but the bond between us never did."Marmalade! Run! Uncle Logan's trying to catch us for a bath!"Five-year-old Stella tore across the garden on her little legs.I raced after her, all my chubby fluff bouncing with every stride.[Damn it! I hate baths! Hide behind the rock garden!]Logan stood on the lawn holding a garden hose, looking utterly helpless."Stella Sterling! If you keep helping Marmalade run away, you can forget about ice cream today!"Stella peeked out from behind the rocks and stuck her tongue out at him. "You're so mean, Uncle Logan! Marmalade says he doesn't want a bath!"Victoria stepped outside carrying a tray of afternoon tea. Watching us tear around the yard, she couldn't help smiling. In the past five

Three months later. My cast finally came off, and I was discharged from the veterinary hospital. The day I returned to the Sterling estate, Logan had a red carpet rolled out just for me. Two rows of bodyguards stood at attention in dark sunglasses before bowing in perfect unison."Welcome home, Cat God!"I strutted down the carpet with my tail held high. Now this was the life.Victoria had made a full recovery. After everything she'd been through, she'd changed. The pampered heiress who'd once lived only for love was gone. She had taken over several of Sterling Group's subsidiaries, making swift, decisive moves that established her as one of Evermont's most formidable businesswomen. As for the rivals who had hoped to watch the Sterling family fall apart, she and Logan crushed every one of them.At home, though, she was still the same gentle mother."Marmalade, come try this. It just arrived this morning."Smiling, Victoria set down a solid gold cat bowl filled with fresh blu

I had no idea how much time had passed.Warmth surrounded me, and the steady beep of medical monitors echoed in my ears.I slowly opened my eyes.Everything was white.I was lying inside a temperature-controlled ICU enclosure at a veterinary hospital. One of my front paws was wrapped in a cast, and tubes ran from every part of my body.Through the glass, I saw Logan. He looked exhausted. His eyes were bloodshot, dark stubble covered his jaw, and it was obvious he hadn't slept in days. The moment he saw my eyes open, he shot to his feet."Doctor! Marmalade's awake!"Several veterinarians hurried over and began examining me."It's a miracle.""The scans don't make any sense."The attending veterinarian stared at the monitor in disbelief."When Marmalade arrived, he had multiple ruptured organs, severe blood loss, and no detectable vital signs."But his body's healing itself at an unbelievable rate. I've never seen anything like it."I rolled my eyes.[Well, of course. Did

Two simple words. They hit Ethan like a sledgehammer. His laughter died instantly as he stared at Logan."What do you mean?"Without a word, Logan turned his phone around.A financial news broadcast filled the screen."Breaking news. Police have cracked a major international money laundering network."Authorities have seized every shell company connected to the case. Hundreds of billions of dollars in illicit assets have been recovered and frozen."The offshore accounts of the primary suspect, identified only as Mr. Caldwell, have also been frozen with assistance from Interpol."Ethan's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets when he saw the names of the companies on the screen. Those were all the shell companies he had set up over the past three years!"No! That's impossible!" He struggled wildly against the bodyguards. "I covered my tracks perfectly! You couldn't have found them!"Logan looked down at him with a cold smile."Ethan, did you really think spending three year

Logan snapped his fingers.Bodyguards poured through the doorway, sealing off every exit from the delivery suite.Realizing the situation was hopeless, a savage look flashed across Ethan's face. He suddenly broke free from the guards restraining him, snatched a pair of surgical scissors off the cart, and charged straight at Victoria."Damn you! If you won't let me live, then we'll die together!"Everything happened so fast that no one had time to react.Victoria was still cradling her precious daughter, with nowhere to run.Ethan's face twisted with madness as the scissors drove toward her throat.[Like hell I'll let that happen!]Ignoring the agony shooting through my fractured paw, I launched myself into the air.Smack! My paw slammed across Ethan's face. My claws raked deep, bloody grooves across his cheek.Ethan screamed. The scissors veered off course and buried themselves in the mattress.Logan reacted instantly. One brutal kick landed squarely behind Ethan's knee.

A deathly silence fell. The air inside the delivery suite seemed to freeze.Victoria's eyes flew wide open. She practically tumbled off the hospital bed, ignoring the blood still running down her legs as she scrambled toward the hidden compartment."My baby!"Dropping to her knees, she reached out with trembling hands but couldn't bring herself to touch the tiny infant whose skin had already turned purple. The baby's eyes remained shut. Her chest didn't rise or fall in the slightest."Doctor! Save her! Please, save her!" Victoria's anguished scream echoed through the room as tears streamed down her face.Murderous fury erupted in Logan's eyes. He grabbed the attending physician by the collar and shoved him toward the baby."If you can't save her, you'll never hold a scalpel again."The doctor stumbled to his knees and immediately began emergency treatment. He cleared the baby's airway, started CPR, and placed a tiny oxygen mask over her face. The only sound left in the delive
