Chapter 3

Author: The Stranded Fish
Samantha's heart throbbed in pain.

She could still lie to herself when she saw Sydney being so affectionate with Harold. When she heard Tina say she had seen the three of them acting like a family, she could still comfort herself by thinking Sydney only wanted to take everything from her.

Now, Channing had admitted it himself.

Samantha trembled as she got up, unable to stop crying. "Channing, why would you do this to me? You knew Sydney made me lose my child, but you still had a child with her?"

Channing looked at her with arrogance and contempt. "I already warned you not to bring this up again. It's in the past, and Sydney didn't do it on purpose."

"She didn't do it on purpose? But she did! I'm your wife. Why would you rather believe her than me?" Samantha asked.

She was so agitated that veins were starting to pop on her forehead.

This marriage had made her suffer too much.

She had endured the pain of losing her child alone while her husband signed the letter of forgiveness. Just as she had finally managed to recover a little, she suffered another blow.

Did Channing and Sydney want to torture her until she went mad?

"Fine. Even if we don't talk about that, what's your intention of taking your child with her into this home? Did you take me for a fool? Channing, I'm not an idiot!" Samantha yelled at him hysterically, her voice hoarse from screaming.

Channing simply looked at her coldly.

"We adopted the boy back then to take care of you and your feelings. He's innocent, and he can still be your son. Since you don't want to have any more children, just take good care of him."

Samantha's heart shattered completely.

All of this was part of a scheme.

According to him, this had become something to take care of her feelings.

"Channing, do you even understand what you're saying?"

Samantha, who had always endured everything in silence, was finally driven into fury.

If she was hearing him right, Channing was basically saying it was fine for him to get his mistress pregnant while married to her, and she should treat that boy with kindness as well.

She couldn't accept that. Once she did, the boy would openly inherit the work and assets she had worked so hard for all these years.

No matter how meek she was, she couldn't lower herself like that.

At that moment, Channing's voice sounded beside her ear.

"I know exactly what I'm saying. You're the one who doesn't understand. You'd better know what's good for you and be a proper wife. The right to stand next to me is what you've always dreamed of."

Yes.

It had been.

But from today on, it no longer was.

Samantha sneered. She had had enough of being his wife. She immediately took out the divorce agreement she had prepared.

"I want you to look at this."

She was about to hand it to Channing when his phone rang.

Channing didn't take the document from her hand. Instead, he picked it up and set it aside first before answering the call from overseas.

The voice from the other end of the call made his expression turn serious.

After hanging up, Channing said, "Leave the document here. I'll look at it later. The game you launched overseas is under attack. A pop-up would appear as soon as it's launched, and it's showing something very violent. You need to go abroad immediately and handle this properly. Otherwise, it'll be taken down, and you'll lose several years of your own hard work."

Listening to him, Samantha finally understood that she had always been indulging in wishful thinking.

Whether it was work or love, she believed that the game she designed was a result of their hard work. It was no different than their own child.

After Channing secured his rights to his inheritance, he returned to the main company to become its CEO. He had completely forgotten her contribution once he was done with her.

Even now, when something happened to the game, it was her problem.

Samantha wiped her tears away as she calmed herself while looking at Channing walking away.

After she placed the divorce agreement in the most visible spot in the bedroom, she dragged her suitcase to the car and told the driver, "To the airport."

On the plane, Samantha fell asleep from exhaustion.

There was a pleasant voice in her dreams. "Don't you remember? I used to hold your hand like this all the time."

Samantha suddenly felt her hand being half-held. Warmth spread between her fingers.

The warmth vanished in an instant, and she woke up.

When she was little, she had lost her memory after a car accident. But she had always felt that other than her parents who had died in that same accident, there was someone extremely important in her life that she still couldn't remember.

"Excuse me, miss. Should I call you Ms. Samantha, or…Mrs. Lane?" A tall man who looked like an assistant came over to speak to her.

Samantha was slightly stunned. "You know me?"

"I've heard of you," the man answered.

Samantha was doubtful. After all, her marriage to Channing wasn't something known to the public. After they married, he never took her to any gatherings either.

"Just call me Ms. Samantha. It makes me less nervous," she said.

"Very well, Ms. Samantha. This is a recommendation letter from my employer. Please take a look. If you need it, you can contact us immediately."

After saying that, the man handed her a letter before leaving.

Samantha's eyes followed him and saw him walk toward a man in a black suit, looking tall and stern. She didn't see the man's face, but he carried the aura of someone who was in charge of everything.

When Samantha looked at the recommendation letter, she saw that it was for a confidential project. The project was related to providing a firewall system for international aviation companies.

Anyone capable of securing a project at this level had to be a major figure on the international stage.

The letter stated that as long as Samantha accepted, they could arrange for her to fake her death and disappear from the world. Her old identity would never be used again, allowing her to join the project and work from within.

Given her current situation, this wasn't a bad choice.

However, she did not decide immediately. She still had things she couldn't simply give up on.

After flying overseas and handling the matter, Samantha returned to the manor. She wanted to continue discussing the divorce with Channing.

As soon as she entered, she saw Opal coming downstairs with an uneasy expression, looking as if she wanted to say something.

After Samantha agreed to accompany Tina to visit Elizabeth's grave, they set a time and headed out.Elizabeth was buried in a cemetery in Suthill, to the south of the city. They had missed the person by less than half an hour, because the flowers laid in front of the tombstone were still very fresh.Samantha realized something and immediately turned to chase after the person. She had never told Tina about Elizabeth's last words before she died. Elizabeth had said there was something unusual about Samantha's origin. Now that Elizabeth had passed away, the person who would come here was definitely not Channing who was spending his time dating Sydney. Samantha's voice was hoarse when she spoke to Channing. "You want me to lie to Octavius and say the woman in the photo is me?"Channing's tone was calm and rational. "I really can't think of a better way. Not only do you need to tell my grandfather that, but you also need to clarify it for the media. That way, the backlash will calm quickly. The benefits outweigh the harm for Lane Group and everyone involved."Everyone involved?Samantha's fingers tightened without her noticing. What mattered most was still Sydney, wasn't it? Just as Channing had said, he would protect Sydney at all times, for the rest of his life.If this stalemate continued, Octavius would probably find out very soon that the woman who had dragged Lane Group's CEO into a scandal was none other than Sydney. Back then, he had firmly opposed Channing marrying Sydney. If he found out, he would definitely send Sydney away. That was why Channing was so nervous."Fine." Samantha smiled, tears falling nonstop. "I

Samantha picked up Channing's call.Channing asked, "Have you seen what's going around online?"His tone was icy, carrying some dark, unreadable emotion. Samantha didn't know what he meant and said nothingChanning continued, "It isn't what they wrote. I can explain."Samantha's heart sank. Wasn't it too late to think of explaining now?She smiled bitterly. "Explain what?""Sydney and I aren't in the kind of relationship you think," Channing suddenly said."Right," she answered calmly without thinking. "I believe you."Channing had always known Samantha was someone meek, but this time, his heart sank for no reason. He had imagined Samantha becoming hysterical, like when she first learned the truth about Harold. He had also imagined her becoming accusatory, like after he failed to see her grandmother one last time. But this time, Samantha was unmoved. No matter how patient a woman was, she couldn't possibly tolerate her husband kissing another woman in a bar. Yet Samantha

When Samantha heard Hailey mention a Mr. Lane, she turned to look.In the middle of the booth was Channing's handsome face. He was easy to recognize under the shifting bar lights. In his arms was a beautiful, striking woman in a red dress. The man who had always been calm and restrained now had eyes full of indulgence and tenderness.Tina followed Samantha's gaze. The corner of her mouth twitched, and she rolled her eyes. "Is that woman Channing's childhood sweetheart?""Yes." Samantha drained the wine in her glass. It tasted bitter.Tina looked stunned. "Even if you two are getting divorced, isn't there still a one-month waiting period? And they're hugging each other openly already?"Samantha didn't speak.Sydney suddenly pushed herself up and leaned toward Channing, kissing him. He instinctively lowered his head to kiss her back and wrapped an arm around her waist. What a perfect pair of childhood sweethearts."Wow!""No

  • The Choices We Made   Chapter 25

Samantha suddenly remembered that over the past few years, Channing had often used business as an excuse to travel overseas. Although she was only an engineer, she still knew enough to know Lane Group had no business ties in the country he kept visiting. However, there were several women's colleges there. Sydney had said she had spent the past few years studying abroad. Only then did Samantha finally understand what Channing had been doing there.Channing frowned. Samantha's answer was beyond his expectations, and he couldn't stop himself from asking her about it. "Then what do you want? Don't think you're really that important. I was kind enough to offer you a trip. Didn't you used to make a fuss about wanting to go? You even made a travel plan more than thirty pages long, but now you don't want to go anymore? I can't be bothered to take you anyway, so don't regret it."Samantha's expression was calm. "I won't regret it. What I want is on the desk at home. Channing, can you pro
