Chapter 4

Autor: Helen
"You knew we had never gotten a marriage license. Why did you let me live as your wife for five years?"

I placed the No Record of Marriage Statement on the dining table. Daniel didn't sit down. He answered calmly, "Our wedding was witnessed by family and friends. That promise was real."

"The promise was real, but the registration was a lie. Why didn't you fix it?"

Daniel glanced at Claire. She was crouching by the pet pen, giving Buddy his medication. At those words, her fingers froze in midair.

"Claire just ended her marriage. She's in a bad place." Daniel softened his voice. "I can't make her feel like she's completely lost me when she's at her most vulnerable."

"So you're going to keep letting her believe you still belong to her?"

"That's not what I said."

"Then why does she treat you like her husband?"

Claire stood up, exhausted, her voice thin. "Eileen, I can move out. I don't want you two fighting because of me."

"You don't have to move." Daniel cut her off immediately. "You can't live alone right now. An unfamiliar environment will set back your recovery."

"I could rent a short-term place near the vet clinic."

"Claire, you had an episode just last night. You can't make this kind of decision today."

I looked at him. "Then what decision are you making for me?"

"Go stay with Aunt Linda for a while."

"For how long?"

"Until Claire's next follow-up is done. I'll sort everything out."

"Sort out her condition, or sort out our nonexistent marriage?"

Daniel walked up to me and reached for the statement. "I'll give you an answer about the marriage license."

I put the paper back in my bag. "You're asking me to move out of my own home and leave it for Claire."

"It's only temporary."

"The apartment is in my name. The car is in my name. You are not my husband, you are not on the lease, and you have no ownership stake. Yet you have been using my home and my car to arrange someone else's life."

I placed the deed and vehicle registration on the table. Daniel's expression finally hardened. "We lived together for five years. Do you really have to start tallying up the property now?"

"I'm not the one keeping score. You divided up my life and gave it to someone else a long time ago."

Claire's eyes turned red. "I don't want to stay anymore."

"You're not leaving." Daniel turned to her, his voice far more firm than anything he'd said to me. "Eileen just needs time to come around. Don't put yourself through this."

"And when I can't come around, who arranges things for me?"

He didn't answer.

I sent the deed, vehicle registration, No Record of Marriage Statement, and screenshots of the access changes to Aunt Linda in a single message. "Please help me find a lawyer and a moving company."

She replied with one word. "Okay."

I then told Rosa to revoke Daniel's administrator privileges on the resident portal immediately. From then on, any change in occupants required my written approval. Rosa replied quickly: the account had been locked down.

Daniel watched me gather my documents. "Eileen, are you really going to walk away while Claire is going through the hardest time of her life?"

"Didn't you say adults should learn to take care of themselves?"

"I just want you to calm down first."

"I'm perfectly calm."

He was quiet for a moment, then pulled a new marriage-license appointment confirmation from a drawer. "I made an appointment for next week. As soon as Claire's follow-up is over, we'll go apply."

This promise was no different from the one five years ago. Back then, he told me the paperwork was already done and the official documents just needed time to arrive.

I took the car keys and my documents. "I'm done waiting."

"Eileen." Daniel gripped my wrist, then let go just as quickly. "You know I do love you."

"I know."

"Then why can't you give me a little more time?"

"Because I already gave you five years."

I dragged my suitcase to the door. Behind me, Claire's voice dropped to a murmur. "Daniel, my chest feels tight."

The next second, he grabbed his jacket and the spare car key and rushed out. "Eileen, wait. Don't go yet. I'll take Claire to the hospital and come right back."

I turned to face him. "Don't bother coming back."

He ignored me. He was already opening the door of my SUV.

Before leaving the garage, I had used tools borrowed from the maintenance room to drain the coolant into a recycling container. I had no intention of letting Daniel use my car to chase me. I had the main key with me, but he had hidden a spare all along.

A bright red warning lit up the dashboard: COOLING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION. STOP IMMEDIATELY.

Daniel glanced at it once and pressed the gas anyway.

"Only your name on the occupancy form. Is that right?"The property manager at my new place in Princeton handed me the registration form."That's fine."I wrote Eileen Bennett under household members. No Daniel. No Helen. No one waiting for me to take care of them.Aunt Linda placed the key in my hand. "The house is old, but the heating has always been reliable.""It's enough."I put my clothes in the closet and left the remaining space empty. I was not saving it for anyone this time. After the SUV was repaired, I drove it to a dealership. A service adviser looked over the repair order. "The cooling system has been replaced, and the bill has been paid.""Who paid?""Mr. Walker."I set the car key on the counter. "I'd like to sell it. Just follow your standard process."The service adviser looked surprised. "You're not keeping it? It's a great vehicle.""No."It had carried five years of shared life and the memory of the Christmas Eve when my husband left me out in the cold. I didn't wa

"I've already made an appointment for a new marriage license."That weekend, Daniel handed me the appointment slip in a private banquet room at a restaurant. "I'm going to tell everyone that you're the only person I want to marry."I looked at the paper, not because I still believed him, but because I had waited five years to hear those words. The room was filled with his relatives, mutual friends, and two property management representatives. Martha from the North Ridge motel and the roadside assistance supervisor joined by video. The lawyer had organized every piece of evidence related to the room keys, the vehicle, and the building access.Daniel stood before everyone, holding a written pledge. "Eileen, I owe you for these five years. I let you carry every responsibility of a wife while deliberately delaying the marriage license. On Christmas Eve, I left you alone in a blizzard."He sounded sincere. His relatives watched me, waiting for me to accept the promise, as if one nod from me

"Is your depression real?"I sat in a coffee shop next to the vet clinic. Claire left Buddy with the staff and sat down across from me."It's real. I've been on medication and in therapy the whole time. Daniel knows my full medical history.""Did you ask for both heated rooms at North Ridge?""No. I only asked if he could find me a quiet place to rest. Everything else was his decision.""You didn't refuse either.""At first I did. Then I realized that all I had to do was say I was scared, and he would handle everything for me."Claire pulled up a recording on her phone. Daniel's voice came through clearly. "Eileen can push through on her own. She doesn't need comforting. You're different. The moment you tell me you're hurting, I can't just do nothing."I didn't speak.Claire played another recording. "I'm not planning to make things legal with Eileen anytime soon. She's been with me so long that her life is already built around this arrangement. If you're willing to come back, I'll nev

"Eileen, you're not here to start another fight, are you?"Helen seated me beside her at a Walker family dinner. Around the table sat Daniel's relatives, several mutual friends, and two neighbors who had spread the false story about my identity in the residents' group chat. She pointed at Claire. "She just went through a divorce. All she has is a dog. Daniel is looking after her out of responsibility. You should apologize for stranding them on the highway in a blizzard."Someone murmured, "Knowing the car had a problem and not saying anything doesn't seem like something family would do."Daniel sat next to Claire and said nothing to stop them.I looked at him. "You're not going to explain?"His fingers tightened around his glass. "The reason I asked everyone here today is to clear the air.""Including the fact that we never got a marriage license?"Helen's expression froze. "There's no need to bring up something like that in front of all these people."I placed the No Record of Marriag

"Mr. Walker says Ms. Miller will only be staying for a few days."Rosa showed me the announcement Daniel had posted in the residents' group chat. He had also asked the neighbors to look after Claire, explaining that she had just been through a divorce and was emotionally unstable. Someone replied below, "They'll be a family soon enough."I didn't read any further. I placed the thirty-day notice drafted by my lawyer on the table. "Daniel has no lease. Please serve this formally. If he has not moved out by the deadline, I will file for possession through the court. I will not change the locks myself. Claire must move out too."Daniel came out of the living room. "You don't have to take things this far.""Thirty days is enough for you to pack, and enough for you to hire your own lawyer.""We did live together for five years.""Which is why I'm giving legal notice instead of changing the locks."Claire stood in the doorway holding Buddy. "I'll find a short-term rental.""You don't have to.

  • The Christmas Eve He Left Me in the Cold   Chapter 5

"Eileen, you knew something was wrong with the car. Why didn't you warn me?"Daniel called after I had already reached the temporary rental arranged by my lawyer."Weren't you chasing me?""I'm asking about the car.""The car belongs to me. You took the spare key without permission and ignored the dashboard warning to stop."Claire's coughing came through the line. Daniel immediately lowered his voice. "She's in the back seat. She's been shaking.""Did you check the car before you put her in it?""I assumed you would have taken care of it."That almost made me laugh. For five years, I had handled the seasonal tire changes, heating maintenance, a leaking washing machine, and Helen's follow-up appointments. Daniel had even quietly taken Claire's post-divorce pet-boarding fees from our shared household account."You assumed I would always take care of everything.""Don't dodge the question. Where are you?""Tell me your location first.""Mile marker twelve, westbound on the interstate.""
