Chapter 2

"Maya, go to my classmate's place and grab my enrollment papers and acceptance letter."

She was eating seafood at some island resort, waves crashing behind her.

Like I was her personal errand girl.

I smirked. "Fine. I'm going."

Half an hour later, I came home with Kelsey's papers.

Brenda was on the couch snacking.

I walked straight over and slid the envelope into my desk drawer where she could see.

"Mom, these are really important college papers.

"Don't touch them.

"If they go missing, I'll miss the enrollment deadline."

Brenda glanced at the drawer and smiled. "Got it. I won't touch them."

But that look in her eyes said otherwise.

I turned away like I was getting a drink.

Then I slipped a tiny camera into the outlet facing the drawer.

On my way back to my room, I caught Brenda staring at it with a small smile.

Early the next morning, I got up for my last shift at my summer job.

After getting dressed, I stepped into the living room.

Brenda was in the kitchen frying eggs and humming.

The smell filled the apartment, but of course, they weren't for me.

They were for Kelsey, who'd be back from her trip soon.

I pointed toward my room and lowered my voice. "Mom, I'm heading to work.

"The papers in my drawer are really important.

"Please don't touch them.

"If anything happens to them, I seriously won't be able to start college."

Brenda plated the eggs and smiled. "I remember. Come eat. I made breakfast just for you."

I looked down, hiding the anger in my eyes.

After breakfast, I headed to the convenience store for work.

Once I changed into my uniform, I stepped out of the security cameras' view and pulled out my phone.

I opened the camera feed.

A few seconds later, the footage loaded.

Ten minutes after I left, Brenda quietly slipped into my room.

She peeked into the hallway and looked around.

Once she knew she was alone, she went straight to my desk.

She yanked open the drawer and pulled out the manila envelope.

My breath caught as I stared at my phone.

Brenda looked at the sealed envelope and smirked.

Then she ripped it open.

No hesitation.

She dumped every document onto the desk.

She flipped through the papers, grabbed the certified enrollment forms, crumpled them up, and tossed them in the trash.

Then she picked up the acceptance letter.

I'd spent three years staying up late to study and pulling all-nighters for that letter.

Brenda barely looked at it.

She grabbed both ends and ripped my acceptance letter in half.

Still not satisfied, she stacked the pieces and ripped them into shreds.

"That's what you get for always showing off!

"That's what you get for doing better than Kelsey!

"You think an unwanted burden like you deserves to go to a good college?

"Let's see you brag now!"

She swept the scraps into a trash bag and strutted out of my room.

On the camera feed, she was even humming.
