POV: Callum Miller

The formal dining room of the Miller estate was an exercise in rigid, suffocating tradition. A massive polished mahogany table stretched across the center of the room beneath a heavy brass chandelier, its dark surface reflecting the gleaming sterling silver cutlery and crisp cloth napkins with clinical precision.

I sat near the middle of the table, my posture painfully straight, hands resting tensely in my lap beneath the overhang of the white tablecloth.

Directly across from me sat Gideon Sterling.

He had changed out of his slate-gray compression top into a dark, button-down tactical shirt, the top two buttons unfastened to reveal the dark line of his collarbone and the edge of his broad, thick neck. Even sitting down, his presence filled the room, his massive shoulders broad enough to make the high-backed dining chair look small.

My father sat at the head of the table, cutting into his dry, overcooked steak with sharp, aggressive strokes of his knife.

"The regional logistics bid goes live next month, Gideon," Harlan said, his voice flat and authoritative as he chewed. "The security protocols need to be airtight. I told the board that with your background running tactical contractors down south, we’d have no blind spots."

"They're taking shape," Gideon rumbled, his voice low, steady, and heavy as iron. He picked up his water glass, his thick, calloused fingers wrapping around the thin crystal. "Your perimeter setup has a few soft angles near the eastern access road, but the structural integrity is solid."

Every time Gideon spoke, the deep, gravelly vibration of his baritone rolled across the polished mahogany table and struck me straight in the chest.

A fresh wave of goosebumps broke across my skin. My knees were pressed tightly together under the table, my ankles locked, my entire lower body tight and sensitive from the lingering friction in my denim. Hearing that exact, dark frequency in the open air—without the buffer of my noise-canceling headphones—was an agonizing, intoxicating torture.

I picked up my fork, my fingers trembling so noticeably that the silver prongs clinked softly against the china plate.

Harlan’s sharp, cold eyes immediately flicked toward me. His jaw set into a hard, disappointed line.

"Look at you," Harlan barked, setting his knife down with a loud, sharp clatter against his porcelain plate. "Can’t even hold your utensil steady. What's wrong with you tonight, Callum?"

I froze, my face burning with a sudden, searing crimson flush. "Nothing, sir. Just... tired from studying."

"Studying," Harlan repeated, dropping his voice into a contemptuous sneer. "That's your excuse for everything. You spend all day slouched over books at the university, hiding in corners, soft as butter. You're nineteen years old, Callum. At your age, Gideon and I were already through basic training, leading squads, learning how to take command of a room."

I kept my eyes locked onto my plate, my chin tucked low into my chest, swallowing down the familiar, bitter lump of shame that always rose in my throat during these dinners.

"Look at me when I'm speaking to you," Harlan snapped, his voice rising in volume, cracking like a whip across the silent room. "You have no drive. No edge. You sit there shaking over a dinner plate like a nervous rabbit. It's embarrassing. If you expect to step into any kind of leadership role in security or law enforcement after graduation, you need to strip that weak, timid nonsense out of your character."

I clamped my jaw shut, my knuckles turning white as I squeezed my hands together in my lap beneath the tablecloth, fighting the humiliating prickle of heat behind my eyes.

"That's enough, Harlan."

The words didn't cut across the room with anger; they dropped into the silence like a heavy slab of concrete.

I flinched, my head snapping up.

Gideon had set his glass down. He hadn't raised his voice, but the sudden, cold authority radiating from his side of the table instantly swallowed the tension in the room. His storm-gray eyes were fixed on my father, flat, dark, and entirely unbothered by Harlan’s military rank.

Harlan blinked, slightly thrown by the sudden interruption. "What?"

"The kid isn't weak," Gideon said smoothly, his deep baritone cutting through the thick air with calm, absolute certainty. He leaned back in his chair, folding his thick arms across his massive chest, his broad frame dominating the space. "He's quiet. There's a difference."

Harlan frowned, his brow furrowing. "Quiet doesn't win bids, Gideon. It doesn't command men."

"Loud men make mistakes because they're too busy hearing themselves talk to notice what's happening around them," Gideon counteracted, his voice low, measured, and dripping with an iron-clad logic that left no room for argument. "Observation is a tactical asset. I've watched him since I walked through that door. He listens. He registers details. He keeps his mouth shut until he has a reason to speak."

My heart gave a violent, hammering thud against my ribs.

I stared at Gideon, completely paralyzed. No one—no one—had ever stood up to Harlan in this house. Least of all about me.

Gideon didn't look at my father. Slowly, deliberately, his heavy gray gaze shifted across the table, locking directly onto mine.

The intensity in his eyes was staggering. It wasn't gentle support; it was a dark, possessive inspection that pinned me to my seat. His gaze tracked down the line of my throat, taking in the rapid, visible jump of my pulse, before rising back to hold my hazel eyes in an iron grip.

"He doesn't need to be loud to have discipline, Harlan," Gideon added softly, his tone dropping an octave into a rough, gravelly register that sent a violent spike of electricity straight down my spine. "He just needs the right structure. Someone who knows how to guide that focus."

My breath hitched sharply in my throat. A quiet, helpless whimper almost escaped my lips, caught barely in time behind my clenched teeth.

The double meaning in his words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Beneath the tablecloth, my legs trembled violently. My thighs pressed so hard against each other that my muscles throbbed, my boxers dampening further against my sensitive skin as my body reacted to the overwhelming, protective dominance radiating from the man across the table.

Harlan grunted, picking his fork back up, clearly displeased but unable to argue with a man whose tactical record he revered. "Maybe. But he's got a long way to go before I see any real grit."

"He'll get there," Gideon rumbled, his gray eyes lingering on mine for two agonizing seconds longer, a subtle, razor-thin tilt appearing at the corner of his heavy jaw. "Won't you, Callum?"

"Y-yes, sir," I whispered, my voice breathy, weak, and entirely unraveled.

"Eat your dinner, boy," Harlan grumbled, returning to his steak.

For the rest of the meal, silence settled back over the dining room, broken only by the quiet clink of silverware against porcelain. But the air was no longer cold with Harlan’s disapproval; it was heavy, hot, and charged with an electric voltage that centered entirely on the broad-shouldered man across from me.

Every time Gideon moved, every time his heavy chest rose and fell beneath his tactical shirt, my eyes were drawn to him like a magnet.

And beneath the dark mahogany table, hidden from my father's ignorant gaze, I spent the rest of the night squirming silently in my seat, trembling under the dark, heavy inspection of Captain Sterling.

POV: Callum MillerThe echoes of the basement shower still hummed beneath my skin, every nerve ending inflamed and throbbing from the agonizing, unfinished pleasure Gideon had inflicted under the hot torrent. I had barely gathered my wits, dried my hair, and pulled on a fresh button-down shirt before the front doorbell chimed, signaling an arrival that shifted the atmosphere of the entire estate.Downstairs in the formal dining room, the heavy mahogany table was set for four. Harlan sat at the head, looking immensely pleased with himself, while Kaelen Vance occupied the seat directly across from me. Kaelen was twenty-four, impeccably styled, and dripping with the casual arrogance of old local money. His family held major investments with my father’s firm, making him a frequent, uninvited presence whenever business crossed into social obligations.Gideon sat to my left, imposing and immaculate in a dark fitted sweater. His hair was slightly damp from his own quick wash, his massive fra

POV: Callum MillerThe heavy footsteps of my father echoed up the basement stairs, followed by the muffled snap of a heavy oak door closing on the main floor. The moment the latch clicked shut overhead, the tense silence in the basement gym shifted, charged with a thick, suffocating electricity that made my knees wobble beneath me.I pushed myself off the rubber exercise mat, my body trembling violently from the brutal conditioning routine. Sweat dripped off my brow, stinging my eyes, sticking my thin shirt to my chest and lower back. I couldn't look Gideon in the eyes as I gathered my towel. I needed water, steam, and distance before my shattered composure completely failed me in the middle of the basement.I retreated into the narrow basement bathroom, stepping straight into the shower stall. Turning the brass knobs, I let the hot water roar to life, instantly filling the enclosed tile space with thick, white clouds of steam. I stripped off my sweat-soaked workout clothes, letting t

POV: Callum MillerThe heavy, metallic smell of iron weight plates and damp concrete hung thick in the air of the basement home gym.I was still trembling from the encounter in the study, my lower lip sore from Gideon’s bruising press, my core burning with an intolerable heat. But before I could even catch my breath, my father had summoned us both down to the lower level. Harlan stood at the foot of the stairs in his rolled-up sleeves, leaning against the doorframe with a mug of coffee in his hand, watching me with a critical eye."Look at you, Callum. You're pale, fidgety, and slouched over like a leaf," Harlan said, shaking his head with a stern sigh. "Living on campus has made you soft. Gideon, I want you to take him through a real tactical conditioning block. Put some discipline back into his spine before the semester kicks into high gear.""Understood, Harlan," Gideon replied smoothly, stepping into the middle of the rubberized mat.Gideon peeled off his dark polo shirt, tossing

POV: Callum MillerThe high-pitched whine of Kaelen’s sports car tearing down the gravel driveway faded into the distance, but the hot, poisonous knot in my gut refused to loosen. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely set the folded bath towels down on the hall console table. Every inch of my skin felt flushed, buzzing with a volatile mix of leftover jealousy, humiliated possessiveness, and the agonizing physical ache Gideon had built inside me since midnight.I couldn't stand being out in the open hallway where Harlan might walk by. I needed darkness, quiet, and a place to collect my shattered composure.I slipped into my father’s private study, retreating into the cool shadow of the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves. The room smelled of old leather bound volumes, polished walnut, and pipe tobacco. I leaned my lower back against the heavy wooden bookshelf, pressing my cold palms against the edges of the carved shelves, trying to slow my ragged breathing.I closed my eyes,

POV: Callum MillerThe heavy sound of a roaring, high-performance engine echoed up the long gravel driveway, shattering the quiet mid-afternoon stillness of the estate.I stood on the wide wrap-around wooden porch, holding an armful of freshly folded bath towels, still hyper-aware of the subtle physical bond connecting me to the man sitting in the driveway. The memory of the morning protocol…the rhythmic tapping of Gideon’s mug, his heavy tactical boot pinning my ankle beneath the breakfast table while my father read the newspaper…was still burning vividly in my mind, keeping my core tight and my posture impeccably straight.A slick, navy-blue European sports car pulled up to the foot of the porch steps, its low bumper kicking up a spray of fine gravel. The driver's side door swung open, and Kaelen Vance stepped out onto the driveway. He was twenty-four, tall, exceptionally well-groomed, and radiating the effortless, obnoxious arrogance that came with belonging to one of the wealthies

The midnight edging session had left my core hyper-sensitive and throbbing, a constant, heavy physical reminder of the control Gideon had exerted over me under my own duvet. Every step I took down the back staircase sent a subtle shock wave of liquid heat straight up my spine, forcing me to tread carefully just to keep my knees from shaking.I stumbled into the bright kitchen, reaching blindly for a clean ceramic mug on the shelf above the coffee maker. My father was already seated at the head of the dark mahogany dining table, a half-empty cup of black coffee at his elbow and the morning newspaper spread flat before him.
