Chapter 2

Author: Ferrari
It wasn't until my body had gone numb from the pain that I finally heard voices coming from above me.

"We've got to get this manhole cover installed today. Someone already warned us back then that this was dangerous."

A flashlight beam swept down, and the blinding light struck me in the face.

"Someone's down there!"

"Someone fell down the manhole! Quick! Call 911!"

The sounds of footsteps, the crackle of walkie-talkies, and the crowd's chatter poured down into the pit.

"Call the police first!"

"Shine a flashlight down there! Is she still breathing?"

Slightly relieved, I closed my eyes and pretended to be unconscious.

Just then, lines of text suddenly flickered in my vision again.

[Isabella's got some nerve. She was so close to giving birth, yet she still had an affair with another woman's man. That's why she lost the baby.]

[She's afraid her husband will kill her if he finds out the truth. That's why she wants to use Kayla as a scapegoat.]

[Isabella bribed the nurse in the operating room to give a false testimony. She wants Kayla dead.]

[Once Kayla's dead, the miscarriage will be swept under the rug. The Clarks will even offer Isabella additional compensation to make it up to her.]

Seeing that, I couldn't help but snort in laughter. It was a good thing I trusted the scrolling text and gave myself a chance to survive.

If walking into the operating room meant that I wouldn't get the chance to turn things around, then what if I never entered the room at all?

"Isabella, I would like to see how you're going to frame me now," I thought.

I waited for some time before someone rescued me from the maintenance hole.

When the light hit my eyes again, I frowned and let out a pained groan at just the right time. I opened my eyes a little, keeping my gaze unfocused. Blood mixed with muddy water trickled from the corner of my mouth.

"Can you hear me? Are you alright?"

I weakly hummed in response, my brows furrowed. My eyelids fluttered as I struggled to open my eyes.

The crowd surrounding me held up their phones.

"She looks terrible! She's covered in blood!"

I was lifted onto a stretcher and wheeled straight to the emergency room. Along the way, I ran into other doctors and nurses, as well as patients I had treated before.

"Isn't that Dr. Robinson from the OB-GYN department? Oh my goodness! I can't believe she's hurt!"

"I heard she fell into the maintenance hole. That's awful!"

The medical team cleaned my wounds and stitched me up. I also underwent X-rays and a CT scan.

I ended up with three stitches on my head, a minor fracture in my right leg that required a cast, and a mild concussion revealed by the CT scan.

Once the entire procedure was over, news of what had happened to me spread throughout the emergency department.

Finally, two police officers came by and sat in front of my bed, ready to take my statement.

"Dr. Robinson, could you walk us through how you fell into the maintenance hole?"

I leaned against the headboard. Even though my voice was weak, it came out clear. "I just finished a surgery and left the hospital when I got a call from my best friend, Isabella White.

"She told me it was an emergency and that she was about to give birth. She wanted me to deliver the baby. I was in a hurry and didn't look where I was going. That's how I fell into the hole."

The officers nodded and pulled up the surveillance footage of the street.

In the video, I was hurrying back to the hospital alone. In my haste, as I was rushing past the maintenance hole, my body suddenly lurched, and I fell right in. No one had any contact with me before or after.

"It looks like you fell into the maintenance hole by accident. We can rule out any intentional harm." The police officer snapped his notebook shut.

I suddenly braced myself against the edge of the bed and tried to sit up. "My best friend is still waiting for me in the delivery room! I have to get there now!"

"Dr. Robinson, you're seriously injured. You can't go anywhere."

"She's my best friend!" My eyes reddened. "I have to be there with her! Otherwise, I'll never forgive myself!"

The police officers couldn't talk me out of it. The nurse sighed as she wheeled me to Operating Room Three.

A crowd had gathered outside Operating Room Three, and a tall man stood out among them. He was Isabella's husband, Don Magnus Clark.

The others were members of the Clark family. There had to be at least 20 or 30 people waiting outside the operating room.

Just as the nurse wheeled me forward, the door to the operating room opened, and a hospital bed was wheeled out.

Just as Magnus walked over excitedly, a piercing cry rang out from the hospital bed.

"I'm sorry, honey! I was so useless! I failed to protect our baby!" It was Isabella.

The once bustling corridor instantly fell silent.

"What happened?" Magnus' voice was trembling.

Isabella kept crying. "I trusted Kayla too much. I thought she'd help me deliver the baby safely. I didn't think… I didn't think her mistake would cost our baby's life…"

The remaining people in the corridor slowly began to disperse. Dr. Miller, Dr. Tobin, and the others who helped Isabella fabricate evidence were all gone. But they couldn't run forever. The entire OB-GYN department knew they were involved in that day's incident, and the police officers had been on the scene earlier. The next day, the hospital issued a disciplinary statement. Dr. Miller and three nurses had been fired, while the anesthesiologist was suspended. All 11 people involved in faking the evidence were blacklisted from the hospital for life. The police also launched an investigation into what they did. I stayed in the hospital for five days. On the morning of the sixth day, I signed the papers to get discharged from the hospital. I leaned on my crutches and slowly made my way out of the hospital, step by step. Once I got home. I pushed open the door. The range hood hummed in the kitchen, and the aroma of food filled the entire living room. Mom poked her head out to take

As soon as the call ended, the corridor fell into silence again. In that silence, something started to fall apart—Isabella's web of lies. 20 minutes later, the phone rang. Magnus answered it and listened for about ten seconds. He then ended the call and looked at Isabella, who was trembling on the hospital bed. "At Luxe Hotel in the south of the city, surveillance footage shows you leaving the same room as a man between 6:00 am and 8:00 am."Magnus paused. "I already sent someone to capture that man."Isabella went limp, as if all the strength had been drained from her. She slid off the bed and collapsed onto the floor, wrapping her arms around Magnus' leg. "Honey… I was wrong… I know I messed up… I didn't want to, but he made me do it. He said that if I didn't sleep with him, he'd tell you everything about our past… I had no choice, honey.""He made you do it, huh?" Magnus looked down at Isabella. His voice was so soft that it was terrifying. "Did he make you bribe all th

Dr. Tobin's explanation left everyone stunned. Isabella almost sat up in the hospital bed. Magnus glanced sideways at Isabella and asked, "Isabella, is she telling the truth?"But Isabella started trembling from head to toe. "That's not true, honey. She's talking nonsense. It must be Kayla. She thinks killing my baby wasn't enough, and now she wants me dead too.""Why don't you want her to play the recording?"Magnus let out a chuckle. His smile was enough to send a chill down our spines. "Play the recording."Dr. Tobin frantically whipped out her phone. Very quickly, a clear female voice rang out from the device. "Don't worry. My baby's definitely gone. You just need to go through the motions for me. Relax. I won't make you do this for nothing. How does 500 thousand dollars sound?"Isabella's tears started streaming down her face. "Honey…" She finally managed. "Hear me out…"I seized the opportunity and spoke to the police officer. "Officer, since she said the baby died as

A nurse stepped forward and said, "Dr. Robinson… I'm sorry. I can't keep this a secret anymore… You were too hasty in your judgment… How could you ask us to keep it from everyone?"Another nurse stepped forward, and another. It was as if they had rehearsed this beforehand."Dr. Robinson was the lead surgeon.""We couldn't have mistaken her for someone else.""I don't know how she fell into the maintenance hole, but it was her in the operating room.""I swear on it."When those four words came out of the nurse's mouth, I let out a chuckle. The crowd's fury erupted again, even worse than before. Someone even started yelling, "Burn her alive!"The police officer was pushed back again and again. He tried to restore order, but his voice was drowned out by the crowd's uproar."Wait!" I stared at the laptop screen. "Play the video again, and slow it down."The nurse holding the laptop looked at me for a moment, clearly reluctant to do as I asked. But with Magnus watching her, she h

The police officer held up his phone for everyone to see. He started playing the complete surveillance footage from the hospital entrance. At 9:10 pm, I could be seen walking out of the hospital before hurrying back at 9:18 pm. On the way back, I stumbled and fell into the maintenance hole. The surveillance timestamp was crystal clear. Over the next 20 minutes, the area around the maintenance hole remained empty. No one went in or climbed out. At 9:40 pm, two workers appeared at the manhole. With that, a crowd gradually began to gather as two firefighters pulled me out. Blood and mud covered me all over. The police officer handed the phone around so everyone could see the video. "Kayla Robinson was stuck in the maintenance hole from 9:18 pm to 9:40 pm. She fractured her right leg and suffered multiple injuries to her head. She couldn't even move."The officer's voice wasn't loud, but it echoed through the quiet corridor. He retorted, "How could someone stuck in the maintenan

The nurse who wheeled Isabella out began tearing up. "I can testify that Dr. Robinson made the wrong judgment and didn't carry out the procedure properly…"At that time, we saw the readings and realized something was wrong. We did try to stop her, but Dr. Robinson stubbornly went ahead…"Isabella's sobs grew louder. "My baby… My poor baby! I went through so much to keep this baby safe for all these months, just so I could meet him. I didn't expect my best friend to kill him!" Dr. Miller, the assistant surgeon, was also dressed in surgical scrubs and said, "As a medical professional, I can testify that Dr. Robinson made a mistake during the procedure, leading to this tragedy. "I failed to stop her, so I share the blame as well. I'm willing to accept the punishment I deserve."Isabella immediately tugged at Dr. Miller's sleeve. "No, Dr. Miller. If you hadn't stood your ground in the end, it might not have been just my baby. I might even…"Isabella didn't finish her sentence and c
