Chapter 3

작가: Montsea123
Every second I spent pretending to be unconscious felt unbearably long.

It wasn't until the clock on the wall ticked past 7:10 pm that I finally let out a quiet breath of relief and slowly opened my eyes.

Just then, the hospital room door was gently pushed open.

Since I was awake, the doctor performed a brief examination.

Fortunately, my car's safety features had held up well, and I hadn't been driving too fast. Aside from some minor external injuries, there was nothing serious. The CT scan of my head came back normal as well.

A few days of rest would be enough for a full recovery.

After the doctor left, two traffic officers in uniform entered the room carrying notebooks and pens.

"Miss, how are you feeling now?" one of them asked. "Would you mind cooperating with a brief inquiry about how the accident unfolded?"

I rubbed my still-aching head and replied softly, "Thank you. I'm fine now, just a little dizzy."

After a pause, I put on an expression of someone trying hard to remember.

"I was stopped at a red light when my phone suddenly went off. I instinctively reached for it, and somehow I accidentally hit the accelerator instead. Before I knew it, the car shot forward..."

The officers carefully recorded every word.

One of them nodded and said, "We've already investigated the scene. At this point, it appears to have been a single-vehicle accident. Fortunately, no other cars or pedestrians were involved.

"However, you'll likely be responsible for the cost of repairing the concrete barrier you hit. Also, the front end of your vehicle suffered significant damage. We've already arranged for it to be towed to the dealership for inspection and repairs."

I nodded lightly, and a bitter smile crossed my face.

"Of course. That's my responsibility. Thank you, officers. Sorry for the trouble."

I had taken a financial hit and ended up with scrapes all over my body. But it was worth it.

There had been traffic officers, medical staff, and so many onlookers at the crash scene. They had all unknowingly become my alibi witnesses.

The officers then returned my shattered phone. It was barely functional, but it could still be turned on.

After signing the accident report and paying my medical bills, I hurried out of the hospital.

As I stepped through the hospital's front doors, I checked the time. It was already approaching 7:30 pm.

I flagged down a cab at the intersection.

But when the cab stopped outside my neighborhood and I pushed open the door, my heart instantly sank to the bottom of my stomach.

A huge crowd had gathered beneath my apartment building.

Conversations, whispers, and sighs filled the air.

I squeezed through the crowd and immediately spotted Isaac kneeling on the ground.

His employee badge still hung around his neck, and his laptop bag lay beside him. He looked as though he had just rushed back from work.

His hair was a mess, and his face was streaked with tears and snot. He held the blood-soaked body in his arms and sobbed as if the world was collapsing around him.

"Mom, wake up! Please wake up! How could you leave me like this? I'm sorry! This is all my fault! I never should've left! If I hadn't, that bitch never would've pushed you off the building!"

The moment I saw Marianne's familiar face, an icy chill swept through my entire body.

I stumbled back. My mind went blank with a deafening roar.

I hadn't come home. I hadn't followed the original course of events.

So why had Marianne still ended up falling to her death?

The officer slammed his hand against the table."That's enough! The evidence is conclusive. Neither of you is getting away with this!"He then turned to the officers beside him and ordered, "Take them into custody. They're to be detained until the trial."Two officers stepped forward with handcuffs and secured them around Isaac and Kathie's wrists.Isaac didn't fight back. He merely glared at me with hatred in his eyes."You got lucky this time," he spat.Kathie, on the other hand, collapsed onto the floor and burst into tears."I was wrong! Please let me go! I won't do it again!" she cried out.As I watched them being led away, the tension that had gripped me for so long finally dissolved.Tears streamed down my cheeks. This time, they were for Marianne. An officer removed the handcuffs around my wrists and said gently, "Ms. Stone, you've suffered a great injustice. Don't worry. They'll get exactly what's coming to them."My voice broke as I said, "Thank you, officers. You'

The smug expressions on Isaac and Kathie's faces instantly vanished, replaced by sheer panic.Isaac suddenly grabbed my arm."What did you say? There's another camera? Why didn't I know about it?"I shoved his hand off. "There's a lot you don't know."A few days earlier, someone in our neighborhood's community group chat had mentioned a thief who had been climbing onto balconies to steal. Even though we lived on the tenth floor, it still made me nervous. Before leaving on my business trip, I had installed a camera on the balcony.I never imagined that such a casual precautionary measure would become the key piece of evidence that cleared my name.Using the account information and password I provided, the officers logged into the system. The footage immediately appeared on the screen. It was a clear view of my balcony. One of the officers skipped the footage to a little after 6:00 pm tonight. At 6:40 pm, Isaac helped Marianne into the living room. She appeared groggy and dis

I suddenly looked up and said, "Officer, wait. I have a request. I need you to go to my house right now and get that beige coat."The room went completely silent the moment those words left my mouth.Isaac's expression changed instantly. A flicker of panic crossed his eyes as he instinctively glanced at Kathie.Kathie's hands tightened around the hem of her clothes. Even her breathing turned uneven.I took in every detail, and my conviction only deepened. There had to be something wrong with that beige coat. The elderly woman didn't see me as she danced in the square that evening. She saw Kathie, dressed in my coat.I said firmly, "I am certain there are traces on that coat. As long as you retrieve it and test for fingerprints and hair, you will find the real culprit."The officers fell silent for a moment, then nodded and immediately sent people to my house to collect the coat.I knew this was my only chance. If there was nothing linking Kathie to that coat, then I would tru

The forensic examiner nodded and said, "Once we run it through the fingerprint database, we'll know who the owner is right away."The moment those words fell, I caught a faint, almost imperceptible smirk at the corner of Isaac's mouth.A chill shot straight from my feet to the top of my head, and the nerves I had just managed to calm tightened all over again.I knew him and Kathie too well. That smirk meant they had a backup plan. The officer turned to both Isaac and me."You two will come back to the station with us to assist in the investigation," he said firmly. "We will run a fingerprint comparison immediately and verify the source of the prints as soon as possible."Isaac immediately wiped the cold smirk off his face and put on that heartbroken expression again, dabbing at the corners of his dry eyes. "Officers, I'll cooperate fully," he said, sniffling slightly. "I only beg you to find out the truth as quickly as possible and get justice for my mother."When he said tho

The murmuring vanished instantly. All eyes were glued to what I was holding. The officer quickly stepped over, took the items from my hand, and examined them carefully. They were a hospital emergency record and a traffic accident report from the police. The medical record clearly stated that the ambulance had been dispatched at 6:50 pm. The attending physician was Dr. John Calloway, and I was accompanied during the examination by the staff nurse, Rina Tyson. The accident report showed that the crash site was three intersections away from the neighborhood. It bore the signatures of the responding officers and the official police seal, and it clearly stated that I had been trapped in the driver's seat at the time. It also noted that bystanders had gathered at the scene before I was transported to the hospital. The officer immediately took out his phone and called the responding traffic unit. A clear voice came through the speaker."That's correct. At approximately 6:45 pm, we r

In that split second of hesitation, a sharp voice suddenly rang out."Jessie Stone! It was her!"The accusation landed like a thunderclap, instantly shattering the noisy chaos.Every gaze in the crowd snapped toward me at once. Before I could even open my mouth to explain, the crowd surged forward like a tidal wave, engulfing me in an instant."You monster! You killed your mother-in-law on her birthday!""How heartless can you be? She's so old, and she even has Alzheimer's. How could you do something like that?""I heard you've been treating her like a burden for a long time. You're pure evil!""Someone arrest her! Don't let her get away!"Curses and accusations rained down on me without pause. Some even reached out and shoved me.Then Isaac suddenly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot as he locked onto me with a terrifying glare. He rushed over and grabbed my arm, squeezing so hard that I felt like my bones might shatter. "I knew you hated my mom. I knew you resented
